How to Unlock Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions
Most Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions are unlocked using species-specific Mega Energy.
| Mega Energy Method | Details |
|---|---|
| Mega Raids | Defeat the featured Mega Pokémon |
| Super Mega Raids | Defeat powerful Mega raid bosses |
| Field Research | Complete eligible research tasks |
| Timed Research | Finish research before it expires |
| Special Research | Complete permanent research stages |
| GO Pass rewards | Reach specific ranks |
| Event bonuses | Participate in selected events |
| Buddy walking | Walk a species that has been Mega Evolved |
The first Mega Evolution normally requires the largest Mega Energy payment.
After Mega Evolving a Pokémon once, the same individual can Mega Evolve again for free when its cooldown reaches zero.
Players can spend extra Mega Energy to reduce or skip the cooldown.
How Long Do Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions Last?
Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions normally last for eight hours.
Only one Pokémon can usually be Mega Evolved at a time. Mega Evolving another Pokémon will cause the current Mega Evolution to end.
The Pokémon is not consumed or permanently altered. It returns to its regular form when the timer expires.
Players can continue using the Pokémon in raids, Gym battles and Team GO Rocket encounters while it is Mega Evolved.
What Are Pokémon GO Mega Levels?
Repeatedly Mega Evolving the same individual Pokémon increases its Mega Level.
Higher Mega Levels provide improved bonuses.
| Mega Level Benefit | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Bonus Candy | Provides additional Candy for matching types |
| Candy XL chance | Improves the chance of earning Candy XL |
| Catch XP | Increases XP from matching-type catches |
| Shorter cooldown | Reduces the wait before a free Mega Evolution |
| Lower energy cost | Makes early reactivation cheaper |
| Raid boost | Boosts attacks used by other Trainers |
The Mega Pokémon’s type determines which catches receive Candy-related bonuses.
For example, Mega Evolving a Water-type Pokémon can provide additional Candy when catching other Water-type Pokémon.
This means Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions remain useful even when the Mega Pokémon is not being used as an attacker.

Best Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions
The best Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions depend on the raid boss, required attack type and desired Candy bonus.
| Role | Recommended Mega Evolution |
|---|---|
| Fighting attacker | Mega Lucario |
| Psychic attacker | Mega Mewtwo Y |
| Dragon attacker | Mega Rayquaza |
| Rock attacker | Mega Diancie or Mega Tyranitar |
| Steel attacker | Mega Metagross |
| Water attacker | Mega Swampert |
| Fire attacker | Mega Blaziken or Mega Charizard Y |
| Dark attacker | Mega Tyranitar |
| Grass attacker | Mega Sceptile |
| Ice attacker | Mega Abomasnow or Mega Glalie |
Mega Rayquaza, Mega Lucario, Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Metagross are among the strongest attacking options.
However, combat power is not the only consideration. Players should also build Pokémon GO Mega Evolutions covering different types so they can earn additional Candy and Candy XL during events.
A varied Mega collection will remain useful across raids, Community Days, Spotlight Hours and general Pokémon catching.
