Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO debuts during Harvest Festival: Taken Over, which runs from October 2 at 12:00 a.m. to October 5, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. local time. To get it, progress through GO Pass: Harvest Festival until you receive a Super Rocket Radar, use that radar to track down Giovanni at a PokéStop, defeat him and then catch the Shadow Zekrom he leaves behind.
The important thing about Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO before the event begins is that Pokémon GO has confirmed Giovanni’s final reward but has not published his complete October battle team. That means there is no factual three-slot counter chart yet. What is confirmed is Zekrom’s Electric/Dragon typing, which leaves it weak to Ground, Ice, Dragon and Fairy damage. Building around those types gives you a strong final-slot answer without pretending the first two Giovanni slots are already known.

How to Get Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO
- Progress through GO Pass: Harvest Festival.
- Claim the Super Rocket Radar when you reach its reward.
- Equip the Super Rocket Radar from your Item Bag.
- Check the PokéStops revealed by the radar and work through any decoy encounters.
- Find Giovanni, defeat him and catch Shadow Zekrom.
The Super Rocket Radar route is the confirmed way to get Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO. Pokémon GO specifically says Giovanni can only be found at PokéStops for this event.

Best Counters for Shadow Zekrom
| Type | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Ground | Super effective against Electric/Dragon Zekrom |
| Ice | Super effective against Dragon |
| Dragon | Super effective against Dragon |
| Fairy | Super effective against Dragon |
For the final part of the Giovanni battle, Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO is most vulnerable to those four attacking types. Strong Ground attackers are particularly comfortable because Ground also resists Electric-type damage.
Exact moveset matters, so a counter that looks ideal on typing can still perform differently depending on which Fast and Charged Attacks Giovanni’s Zekrom is using.
What About Giovanni’s First Two Pokémon?
The October lineup that leads into Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO has not been published in the event announcement. Pokémon GO only says Team GO Rocket Leaders and Giovanni are using different Shadow Pokémon.
Avoid building a full counter team around an older September lineup and assuming it will remain unchanged. Once October 2 arrives, Giovanni’s live first and second slots are the reliable basis for a complete three-Pokémon team.
Can Shadow Zekrom Be Shiny?
Yes. Pokémon GO marks the Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO encounter as Shiny-eligible during Harvest Festival: Taken Over.
That does not mean every Giovanni encounter will be Shiny. It simply means the reward has a chance to appear in its Shiny form.
Can Shadow Zekrom Fuse With Kyurem?
No. The event announcement explicitly says Shadow and Purified Pokémon cannot fuse with other Pokémon, so Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO cannot be used to create Black Kyurem.
A regular Zekrom can fuse with Kyurem using Volt Fusion Energy and the required Candy, but the Shadow reward is excluded from that system.
Should You Remove Frustration?
Yes, if you plan to battle with Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO. Harvest Festival: Taken Over lets you use a Charged TM to remove Frustration from Shadow Pokémon while the event bonus is active.
The event also allows Charged TMs to remove Frustration, so the new Giovanni reward can be made battle-ready during the same takeover window instead of waiting for a later Rocket event.
The official Harvest Festival: Taken Over announcement confirms the Super Rocket Radar route, Giovanni encounter, Shiny eligibility and fusion restriction for Shadow Zekrom Pokémon GO.

Giovanni October 2026 Team for Shadow Zekrom
Giovanni’s October team is now live. He opens with Shadow Persian, uses Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Machamp or Shadow Kangaskhan in slot two, and finishes with Shadow Zekrom.
| Slot | Giovanni Pokémon | Useful counter types |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shadow Persian | Fighting |
| 2 | Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Machamp or Shadow Kangaskhan | Water/Grass for Rhyperior, Psychic/Flying for Machamp, Fighting for Kangaskhan |
| 3 | Shadow Zekrom | Ground, Ice, Dragon or Fairy |
A flexible starting trio is a fast Fighting-type shield breaker for Persian, a second Pokémon chosen after you identify Giovanni’s random middle slot, and a strong Ground, Ice, Dragon or Fairy attacker saved for Zekrom. If your first attempt reveals Rhyperior, Machamp or Kangaskhan, rematch the same encounter with the matching counter rather than trying to force one universal three-Pokémon team.
