Parley Proficiency Sails are now obtainable in Sea of Thieves as part of the live Talk Like a Pirate Day event running alongside Season 21. The requirement is straightforward but deliberately social: raise the new Parley Pennant from your ship’s Flag Box, sail close enough to other crews to trigger the parley interaction, and complete the requirement with three different crews before the event closes on September 22, 2026.
The new pennant is a permanent communication tool, but Parley Proficiency Sails are the limited reward attached to its launch event. Rare has now confirmed the live requirement in the Season 21 release notes, so there is no need to chase Voyages, spend Ancient Coins or buy the Premium Season Pass for this cosmetic.
How to get Parley Proficiency Sails

To unlock Parley Proficiency Sails, equip the Parley Pennant from your ship’s Flag Box and use it while approaching three other player crews during the Talk Like a Pirate Day event. The pennant tells nearby crews that you want to talk, and the event tracks successful use of that system across three encounters.
- Board your ship and interact with the Flag Box.
- Equip the new Parley Pennant.
- Sail toward another player ship while the pennant is raised.
- Repeat the process with three crews before September 22.
- After the event requirement is completed, check your ship cosmetics for the reward.
You do not need to sink the other ships, win a fight or complete an Alliance Voyage to earn Parley Proficiency Sails. The event is built around meeting other crews rather than defeating them, which makes this one of the easier launch rewards to finish if you can find populated waters.
What the Parley Pennant actually does
The Parley Pennant is selected from the normal ship Flag Box. When another crew sails into range, the game can notify them that your crew is looking to talk. It is a signal rather than a protection system, so another crew can still ignore it, open fire or simply sail away.
That distinction matters while working on Parley Proficiency Sails. Raising the pennant does not turn your ship into a safe zone, and it does not force another crew to accept an Alliance. Approach with the normal amount of caution, keep your ship under control and avoid carrying treasure you would hate to lose if the conversation goes badly.
Do the three crews have to cooperate?
Rare’s live requirement for Parley Proficiency Sails focuses on using the Parley Pennant to engage with three other crews. It does not list a combat win, a shared Voyage or a formal Alliance as part of the unlock. Your goal is to make the three qualifying approaches while the event is active.
If one crew immediately attacks, move on rather than wasting time trying to force a friendly encounter. The Sea of Thieves Free Weekend overlaps most of the event, so the seas should have plenty of newer crews available between September 17 and September 21.
Where to find the Parley Pennant
The Parley Pennant is not a Pirate Emporium purchase and is not consumed when you use it. Open the Flag Box on your ship and select the new pennant from the available flags. Once the launch event ends, the pennant remains in the game permanently even though Parley Proficiency Sails stop being available through this specific event challenge.
This also means returning players do not need to unlock the pennant through the Season Pass first. It is part of the Season 21 communication tools, while the seasonal progression track has its own separate rewards, including the Flame’s Light Lantern at the end.
When the Parley Proficiency Sails event ends
The Talk Like a Pirate Day event runs from September 17 through September 22, 2026. That is the window for earning Parley Proficiency Sails. The Xbox free-play promotion ends a day earlier on September 21, so anyone relying on that temporary access should finish the three-crew requirement before the free period closes.
Once earned, Parley Proficiency Sails are a permanent ship cosmetic on your account. The limited part is the challenge window, not the cosmetic after it has been unlocked.
The fastest way to finish the challenge
The simplest route to Parley Proficiency Sails is to avoid turning the objective into a normal treasure session. Spawn in, raise the Parley Pennant immediately and prioritise finding player ships. Keep your own loot light, use the map and horizon to locate activity, and approach visibly enough that another crew has time to react to the pennant instead of assuming you are setting up an ambush.
Season 21 has several launch rewards using completely different systems, so do not mix them together. The Loquacious Figurehead comes from a Microsoft Rewards Ancient Coin promotion, while the September Twitch Drops use linked Twitch viewing time.
Rare lists the live Talk Like a Pirate Day requirement in the Season 21 release notes. If you want Parley Proficiency Sails, the important bit is simple: use the Parley Pennant with three crews before September 22.
