Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern is the named reward Rare and Xbox are using to cap the refreshed Season 21 seasonal track. Unlike the Talk Like a Pirate Day cosmetics arriving through Game Pass, Microsoft Rewards and Twitch, this lantern is earned by actually progressing through the new season’s normal reward path.
The important distinction is that Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern is not a limited September event claim. Today’s public Season 21 announcement says the lantern waits at the end of the refreshed seasonal track, so the job is to build Season 21 Renown and complete the track rather than chase a one-day challenge or redeem an external perk.
How to get the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern

Play during Season 21 and earn Renown to advance through the free seasonal progression track. The Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern is positioned at the end of that refreshed track, making it a progression reward rather than a Pirate Emporium purchase or a Premium Pass-only bonus.
Renown is earned through normal Sea of Thieves play, including completing activities and making progress during a session. You do not need to limit yourself to Talk Like a Pirate Day content. The point of the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern route is that the seasonal track can move forward while you play the parts of the game you actually enjoy.
Do you need the Premium Season Pass?
The public announcement describes a refreshed Seasonal track with new rewards and places the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern at its end. It does not say the lantern requires the Premium Tier, and the wider Season 21 schedule separately describes a free Season Pass alongside a Premium Tier carrying the Mutiny’s Mark collection.
That means you should follow the free seasonal progression path shown in-game rather than buying Premium solely for the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern. If Rare changes the reward placement once the live track is visible, the in-game Season screen is the authoritative place to check the lantern’s exact slot.
How quickly can you reach the end of the track?
There is no special one-step unlock for the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern. Your pace depends on how much Renown you earn during Season 21, so regular play and event bonuses will naturally shorten the grind compared with logging in only occasionally.
September also includes Twitch Drops with a Season 21 Renown Level reward and a later Gold & Glory weekend. Those bonuses are separate from the lantern itself, but anything that adds seasonal progression can help move you toward the end of the track where the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern is waiting.
Why the lantern is different from the other Season 21 rewards
Season 21 launches with a pile of named cosmetics that all use different unlock methods. The Speaking Trumpet comes from Game Pass, the Loquacious Figurehead is tied to a Microsoft Rewards Ancient Coin offer, Fishbone Throwing Knives come from Twitch and Parley Proficiency Sails use the Parley Pennant event challenge.
Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern is the straightforward long-form progression reward among them. You can work toward it after the September promotions have ended, provided Season 21 is still active and you continue progressing the seasonal track.
That also means missing the Free Play Weekend or September Twitch Drops does not block the lantern route. Those promotions can make Season 21 more rewarding, but the Sea of Thieves Flame’s Light Lantern remains tied to seasonal progression itself rather than any one launch-week event.
