Sea of Thieves Season 21 launches on September 17, 2026, with a renewed focus on recurring live events, continued Custom Seas improvements, a new Seasonal reward track and the permanent Parley Pennant communication tool. Rare has also packed September with Talk Like a Pirate Day rewards, Twitch Drops and a Gold & Glory weekend.
This Season is less about one giant themed feature and more about improving the live structure around the existing game. That means the useful changes are spread across the event calendar, progression rewards, social tools and Custom Seas rather than being tied to a single new map or mode.
Sea of Thieves Season 21 release date

Sea of Thieves Season 21 starts Thursday, September 17. The launch also lines up with the beginning of the Talk Like a Pirate Day celebrations and an Xbox free-play weekend running September 17 to 21.
Players can begin working through the new Season Pass as soon as the update is live. Rare describes the Season as being built around recurring Live Events while continuing work on the free Custom Seas toolset.
What is new in Sea of Thieves Season 21?
Sea of Thieves Season 21 adds a fresh Season Pass, new Outpost shop cosmetics, the Mutiny’s Mark Premium Tier collection and a new Star Prize at level 50 of the free pass. The Pirate Emporium also brings back the Bleakheart Groom.
Custom Seas continues to receive improvements as well. Rare is using the Season to develop that creative ruleset alongside the regular shared-world game rather than abandoning it after its earlier rollout.
Parley Pennant explained
The new Parley Pennant is one of the clearest additions in Sea of Thieves Season 21. It becomes a permanent option in your ship’s Flag Box and is designed to signal that your crew wants to talk with nearby players.
It is only a signal, not a protection mechanic. Another crew can ignore the pennant or attack anyway. The idea is to give players a recognised visual cue for peaceful communication rather than relying entirely on voice chat or improvised signals.
How to get the Parley Proficiency Sails
During the September 17 to 22 Talk Like a Pirate Day event, raise the Parley Pennant and approach three other ships. Completing that requirement unlocks the Parley Proficiency Sails as a permanent cosmetic reward.
Sea of Thieves Season 21 therefore gives the pennant an immediate reason to use it, but the communication tool itself remains available after the limited event ends.
Season 21 events and rewards
September’s schedule includes weekly Fight Nights and Emissaries of Fortune, the Talk Like a Pirate Day event, Twitch Drops from September 18 to 23 and Gold & Glory from September 25 to 28.
The Twitch Drops include gold and Renown alongside the Drum Show-Off Emote, Lazybeard Title, Twilight Hunter Fishing Rod, Graveyard Gladiator Pistol and the Fishbone Throwing Knives for players who complete the full watch requirement.
Game Pass and Microsoft Rewards extras
Sea of Thieves Season 21 also has a Game Pass In-Game Benefit called the Vociferous Speaking Trumpet, available to claim before October 31. Microsoft Rewards bundles can include Ancient Coins and the Loquacious Figurehead.
These are separate from the normal free Season Pass. You should treat them as additional promotions with their own eligibility rather than rewards every player receives automatically on September 17.
Is Season 21 free?
Sea of Thieves Season 21 is a free seasonal update for players who have access to the game. The standard Season Pass is also free, while the Premium Tier is an optional paid track with its own cosmetic collection.
The September 17 to 21 free-play weekend gives newcomers a temporary way to join without a Game Pass subscription, making the Season launch unusually easy to try before committing to a purchase or subscription.
Official Sea of Thieves information
Rare publishes the live event calendar and current rewards on the official Sea of Thieves website. Sea of Thieves Season 21 begins September 17, with several September events starting immediately after the update.
