Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone Achievement Not Unlocking: October Fix

Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone is the Steam achievement for launching the game after Gabe Newell sent a garden gnome into space. It normally unlocks when you start Half-Life: Alyx. Valve’s October 26, 2026 update fixed a bug that prevented the achievement from appearing for some players.

You don’t need to carry the in-game garden gnome through the campaign to earn Gnome Alone. That belongs to a different achievement. Start by installing the latest Half-Life: Alyx update and launching the game on the Steam account that owns it. Then check your achievement list.

Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone achievement unlock conditions

The description for Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone reads, “Launch Half-Life: Alyx after Gabe Newell launched a garden gnome into space.” The real-world event took place in November 2020. Steam lists it as a launch-triggered achievement, so entering a campaign chapter or completing a puzzle is not part of its condition.

That unusual wording is why players sometimes confuse Gnome Alone with a hidden gnome collectible. It’s tied to a real space launch associated with Valve’s Gabe Newell. The trigger is running Half-Life: Alyx through Steam after that event, not collecting a gnome in City 17.

What Valve fixed in October 2026

Valve fixed the achievement trigger in its October 26, 2026 update. It was a game-side issue, so you don’t need to change graphics settings, install a mod or restart your campaign. The release also added desktop foveated rendering and repaired some Workshop rendering crashes.

The October 28 follow-up targeted AMD performance and foveated-rendering visual glitches, so the original achievement fix is part of the current updated game build. There’s no need to switch Vulkan or use an experimental graphics setting merely to trigger Gnome Alone.

How to make Gnome Alone unlock after updating

If Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone still isn’t visible, exit Half-Life: Alyx and let Steam finish downloading updates. Relaunch the game from the Steam Library while signed in and online, then give Steam a moment to update its achievements list. Check both the Steam overlay and the game’s Achievements section in your Library.

If you’ve already unlocked the achievement, Steam will keep showing it as completed on your account. Reopening the game won’t produce a second unlock notification. Check the date or unlocked state first, particularly if you played when the space-launch event originally happened.

Gnome Alone vs Gnome Vault of My Own

The Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone achievement is different from Gnome Vault of My Own, which involves bringing the garden gnome from Russell’s Lab all the way to the Vault. That is a lengthy in-game challenge requiring the object to accompany you. The October patch describes Gnome Alone only, not a shortcut for the gnome-carrying achievement.

The Half-Life Alyx Gnome Alone achievement unlocks when the game starts. A new save, replayed chapter or in-game collectible isn’t required. The challenge where you carry a gnome through the campaign is called Gnome Vault of My Own.

What to check in your Steam achievements

Install the latest game update, launch Alyx through Steam and check the achievement in your Library. If it still appears locked, confirm Steam has finished the download and that you’re signed into the account you normally use. Steam Support can use the game build and account details to investigate a remaining unlock problem.

The same October update added settings and fixed Workshop problems. Our foveated rendering guide and Workshop crash fixes cover those changes; neither requires a new save to apply.
