Sims 4 Family Recipes let you create a signature family dish that other Sims can learn. The Businesses & Hobbies expansion is required, and the October 27, 2026 patch widened the available selection with 375-plus existing dishes. Those are new choices for family recipes, not entirely new meals.
The setup is simple once you know the three choices: a base dish, a secret ingredient and a Special Touch. Here’s how to put them together, prepare the result and teach it to someone else in your household.
How to make Sims 4 Family Recipes
To create Sims 4 Family Recipes, you need The Sims 4 Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack. Select a fridge or suitable cooking object, choose Family Recipes and then Create a Family Recipe. The Grammy’s Family Recipes book in Build/Buy also provides access to the system.
Give the dish a name, select a base recipe, choose a secret ingredient and add a Special Touch. These three components define the meal and the additional effect it will have on a Sim who eats it. Confirm your combination, then use the Family Recipes interaction to prepare it.

For Sims 4 Family Recipes to use a particular dish, your Sim may need the relevant cooking skill or unlock and you must own the pack supplying that food. If a meal is absent from the family-recipe selection, first check whether your Sim can cook the normal version.
Which dishes can become Sims 4 Family Recipes?
EA says Sims 4 Family Recipes now accept more than 375 additional pre-existing dishes that were previously unavailable as base recipes. The additions cover the base game and extra packs, including many cultural dishes. It is not a free unlock for meals belonging to expansions you have not purchased.
EA has not released a complete list of all the newly eligible foods. A small number still do not qualify because of technical issues or because developers did not consider them appropriate family dishes; EA specifically mentioned graham crackers. EA hasn’t provided a verified official item-by-item list of the additions, so it’s more useful to check the picker in your updated game than rely on guessed lists.
After installing the patch, open Create a Family Recipe and inspect the base-dish choices. That is the quickest way to see which dishes your Sim can actually turn into a family recipe. The October 27 update overview covers the other culinary changes arriving on the same day.
What do Sims 4 Family Recipes Special Touches do?
A Special Touch gives a prepared recipe an additional gameplay effect. Depending on the effect, a Sim who eats it may benefit from a mood change, help with a need or another specific bonus. Some options are unlocked through gameplay experiences, which means two households may have different touches available.
Saved Sims 4 Family Recipes are tied to their Special Touches. You can save up to ten separate recipes because each needs its own Special Touch. Reusing a touch can overwrite the family recipe already attached to it, so check before replacing a favourite. Check your current saved dishes before making a new version, particularly in a long-running family save.
There is no requirement to turn every meal into a family recipe. Cooking ordinary versions still works as before. The extra effort makes sense when the dish has a useful effect or when you want to hand a signature meal down through generations.
How to prepare and teach Sims 4 Family Recipes
After creating the entry, use Prepare a Family Recipe on the fridge or another supported cooking object. To pass the dish on, select Teach Family Recipe with an eligible Sim. You can also view learned recipes to see which dishes and combinations your household knows.
Teaching Sims 4 Family Recipes makes sense for legacy families: you can pass down a dish instead of having it disappear with the person who created it. The October patch expands the menu but keeps the existing teaching and Special Touch system.

Why are some Sims 4 Family Recipes missing?
If a dish is missing after October 27, confirm you’ve installed the patch, own any pack supplying the dish and unlocked its standard recipe through the relevant Cooking skill or gameplay. EA says some dishes will remain excluded even after the new pool arrives.
If the menu behaves strangely after updating, back up the save and try a clean test without mods. Missing choices are not a reason to delete a household. The Dine Out guide covers a different set of food problems, including restaurant workers, seating and meals left uneaten.
Sims 4 Family Recipes remain a Businesses & Hobbies feature after the patch. The update expands the selection of foods you can turn into family heirloom dishes; it doesn’t give the expansion away for free.
