Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery is coming to Europe in early 2027, with Nintendo updating its wireless N64-style pad so owners can change the battery when it wears out. The revision works with Nintendo Switch 2 as well as the original Nintendo Switch family.
If you use the Nintendo 64 Classics app to play Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask or Mario Kart 64, there’s no need to replace a controller that already works. The main reason to look for the newer version is its serviceable battery, not extra buttons or improved game performance.
When will the Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery be available?

Image: Nintendo. The Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery update is for the modern wireless pad, not a vintage wired Nintendo 64 controller.
Nintendo expects the revised controller to begin appearing in its European store in early 2027. That includes the United Kingdom, although Nintendo warns that availability may differ by country, factory production and retailer. There is no confirmed day of release or UK replacement battery price.
The timing is part of Nintendo’s response to European battery regulations taking effect in mid-February 2027. Other affected products include the wireless GameCube controller for Switch 2, Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo’s plans are estimates, not launch-date promises.
How do the old and new N64 controllers compare?
For the Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery revision, Nintendo has confirmed a user-replaceable battery, the same battery capacity as the current model, and a weight increase of roughly one gram. The company’s product-security information also lists the new hardware alongside the existing model.
| Feature | Original wireless N64 pad | Revised N64 pad |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo model code | HAC-043 | HAC-043(-01) |
| Battery capacity | Original capacity | No change |
| Weight | Approximately 233g | Approximately 234g |
| Battery replacement | Not designed for owner replacement | Owner-replaceable design |
| European availability | Already available | Early 2027 estimate |
Nintendo has not announced a longer runtime, redesigned stick or updated controller firmware as part of this battery change. The Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery version is a hardware revision; existing controllers will not become user-replaceable by downloading a software update.
How to identify the Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery model
Look for the model identifier HAC-043(-01) when Nintendo starts selling the new version. The earlier Nintendo Switch Online controller is HAC-043. Nintendo’s support information for the current N64 controller says its model number is printed on the back of the pad.
That is more reliable than guessing from a photograph of a grey controller. The colour and familiar three-pronged shape are not evidence of a battery revision. Nintendo has not published a UK list of revised N64 box labels or serial-number prefixes, so be careful with seller listings that claim to identify the 2027 model by an unverified serial.
Does the Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery controller work on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo lists the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Switch Online controller as a compatible wireless accessory for Switch 2. It can be charged by connecting it to the Switch 2 dock with a USB cable. Its HOME Button cannot wake a Switch 2 console from sleep, so use the console’s Power Button or an appropriate Switch 2 controller to wake it.
The pad also works with Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED. Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics itself is available on both Switch and Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. By contrast, the GameCube Classics app is exclusive to Switch 2. That’s a difference between game libraries, not the N64 controller battery hardware.
Do you need the controller to play Nintendo 64 Classics?
No. The Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery controller is an optional accessory, designed to recreate the original Nintendo 64 button layout. You can use other compatible controllers to play Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics; you don’t need to buy the replica pad to get the games.
Anyone with an eligible paid Nintendo Switch Online membership can purchase the official controller when it is available. The Nintendo 64 game library itself requires the more expensive Expansion Pack membership. Buying a controller alone does not unlock games, and Nintendo does not guarantee the N64 pad will support every feature of unrelated Switch games.
Will the Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery kit be sold separately?
Nintendo says it plans to sell a battery replacement kit for each revised product through Nintendo Store in Europe. It has not yet announced a detailed guide, individual kit price or exact sale date for the Nintendo 64 controller replaceable battery version. Do not open the original HAC-043 on the assumption that it uses the same battery kit as HAC-043(-01).
Owners of working older controllers can keep using them. Nintendo says there is no obligation to replace products purchased before the 2027 rules take effect. If your current N64 pad has stopped charging or developed a fault, contact Nintendo support for repair options before attempting a battery swap.
