STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data is at risk if you begin the console game before installing its available patches. Spike Chunsoft’s October 29 launch notice gives a direct warning: applying patches after you have started playing will delete all save data. Install and update the game before opening it for the first time.

That applies to Switch 2, Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, whether your copy is digital or physical. Finish the initial download, check for updates and let the installation complete before beginning the story.

The publisher’s instruction is about update order. Starting an unpatched copy and installing a patch later can erase progress; simply downloading the game does not mean its day-one update is installed. Check that every queued update is finished before selecting New Game.

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data tracks decisions throughout a branching visual novel. Losing it can mean revisiting hours of dialogue and Phone Trigger choices, so get patching out of the way before becoming invested in a route.

Safe Day-One Patch Installation Order

Install the game, connect your console to the internet, check for software updates and let the downloads and installation finish. Return to the download queue before launching so you can see that the patch is complete.

A game icon appearing on the home screen does not guarantee the latest patch is installed. To protect STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data, check the game’s update status directly, then start playing only once the console reports that no updates remain.

Updating on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

On PS5, highlight the title on the home screen, press Options and choose Check for Update. Wait for downloading and installation to finish before opening the game. The same update check applies whether you installed a download or a physical copy.

On Xbox Series X|S, open My games & apps, select Manage and look under Updates. Finish any pending patch before launching. A separate Xbox startup problem affects network-connected consoles, but deleting local saves or skipping patches is not the answer.

Updating on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

On either Nintendo system, highlight the game on HOME, press + or – and choose Software Update, then Via the Internet. Leave the console connected and wait for the update process to finish completely.

The game has separate Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions. Highlight the version you own, run the internet update check and allow it to finish. The publisher’s STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data warning matters whichever edition you start.

Already Started Playing Without the Patch?

Already played without updating? Check the game’s current version before you change anything. The late-patch deletion warning means you should preserve whatever local and cloud save data still exists. Do not reset your system, clear saved data or downgrade the game as an improvised repair.

If your progress has disappeared, check your console’s existing backup options and contact Spike Chunsoft support with your platform, game version and update history. Protect the remaining STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data rather than overwriting it while investigating.

UK Physical Copies and the November Release

Physical Standard and SteelBook editions for PS5 and Switch 2 arrive in the UK and EU on November 3, 2026. Digital versions launched October 29; North American physical copies kept that original date. The later UK delivery date does not change the patch instructions.

When a disc or cartridge arrives, install the game, connect to the internet and apply every available update before opening it. The same order protects STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data on a boxed edition, even if the game looks ready as soon as installation completes.

Start the Story After Everything Has Updated

Once the console confirms that the game and its patches are installed, start the story as normal. RE:BOOT adds redrawn artwork, rerecorded voices and the new Gamma Worldline to the time-travel adventure. Keep using your console’s normal save-management tools as you play.

The safest way to protect STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT save data is to update first and play second. Check for the day-one patch before your first session, let it finish completely and only then begin saving your progress.
