FFXIV Keybound Brawler Controller Not Working: Keyboard Requirements

Keybound Brawler controller

Keybound Brawler controller input is not supported for typing in Final Fantasy XIV’s Keybound Brawler event. Square Enix requires a physical keyboard and explicitly states that gamepads and on-screen keyboards cannot be used. If your buttons appear to do nothing when the typing challenge starts, that’s the event’s input requirement, not a broken controller.

Keybound Brawler arrived on 28 October 2026 as a four-player FFVII Remake collaboration in the Gold Saucer. You can normally play FFXIV with a controller, but this attraction works differently. Here’s what to connect, what to test and what won’t work.

Does Keybound Brawler controller input work in the event?

No. The attack words that appear above enemies are typed with a hardware keyboard. The controller’s action buttons and directional controls do not replace the text entries. Square Enix also rules out a software keyboard displayed on the screen, so using the console’s virtual keyboard isn’t a solution.

The Keybound Brawler controller restriction is specific to the typing activity. It doesn’t mean your gamepad stops working across the rest of Final Fantasy XIV. The event asks you to enter words to attack incoming enemies instead of performing your normal job rotation or pressing abilities on the cross hotbar.

What keyboard do you need for Keybound Brawler?

You need a physical keyboard recognised by the device running FFXIV. On PC, use a working keyboard for text entry in the game. On PlayStation or Xbox, connect a keyboard that your console recognises for typing. The event doesn’t need a special Final Fantasy VII-branded keyboard; it requires ordinary physical key input.

Before entering the attraction, check whether you can type in a normal in-game chat field. If text doesn’t appear there, sort out the keyboard connection at the system level first. Check that the cable or wireless connection is established and that your console or PC is receiving input.

Even if the keyboard works in chat, the Keybound Brawler controller activity still uses its own word-entry interface. When the stage begins, follow the text displayed above the enemies. A separate controller button press will not complete an attack word for you.

Console players can unlock the event through the usual in-game menus, but the battle requires keyboard input. If your controller works for walking around Keybound Square but won’t hit enemies when the typing round starts, connect a hardware keyboard instead of trying different cross-hotbar bindings.

An on-screen keyboard opened with the controller isn’t supported. Check that the console recognises the physical keyboard in a standard text field before returning to the attraction. That is the relevant compatibility check, not changing your character’s controller layout or combat macros.

Can you use a virtual keyboard for the Keybound Brawler controller activity?

No. Square Enix’s event instructions expressly exclude on-screen keyboards as well as gamepads. Using the on-screen chat keyboard or a virtual typing overlay won’t meet the documented input requirement. The game is a typing challenge, so the event must receive real keyboard input.

If you’re sharing a console with someone who usually plays controller-only, arrange a compatible physical keyboard before starting the challenge. There is no separate controller typing mode advertised for Keybound Brawler, and the event’s own help text is clear about its supported input.

How to unlock Keybound Brawler if your controller works normally

You need a level 15 character, the Gold Saucer quest It Could Happen to You, and Keyward Bound from the Catlike Mammet at Gold Saucer X:5.4, Y:7.0. The earlier Gold Saucer quest starts with the Well-Heeled Youth in Ul’dah, Steps of Nald X:9.6, Y:9.0.

If Keybound Brawler isn’t available at all, check those quests before troubleshooting your input device. The event unlock guide covers the full route, while our Keyward Bound guide focuses on that specific quest.

Does the Keybound Brawler controller requirement affect MGC rewards?

To earn Manderville Gold Saucer Credits, you participate in the typing attraction. Those MGC buy the FFVII Remake outfits and the 430 MGC Magitek Scorpion mount. Square Enix requires keyboard input for the activity, so a controller-only approach doesn’t provide a separate way to complete the typing rounds.

The reward list covers all 20 MGC shop items. The Keybound Brawler controller answer is simple: keep using a controller for the rest of FFXIV if you prefer, but use a physical keyboard when it’s time to type the words in Keybound Brawler.
