The ESO Tanlorin companion unlocks after completing The Garland Ring, a recruitment quest beginning north of Vulkhel Guard in Auridon. First claim Tanlorin from the Crown Store through ESO Plus or purchase the companion entitlement. Then travel to Vulkhel Guard Wayshrine and locate the ice trap holding Tanlorin.
Free Tanlorin from the ice trap near Vulkhel Guard, then help them track Wisteria and Oleander. You’ll gather alchemical ingredients, prepare a tracker fluid near Skywatch and follow a clockwork tracking fly into Toothmaul Gully. Finish the remaining investigation and dialogue to recruit Tanlorin; the quest doesn’t require you to complete the High Isle or Necrom story.
Where the ESO Tanlorin companion quest starts in Auridon
Open the Crown Store → Companions listing and claim Tanlorin first. Once the entitlement is associated with your account, check Collections → Allies → Companions to see if the quest is offered there. Otherwise use Vulkhel Guard Wayshrine in Auridon, leave the city heading north and interact with the trapped High Elf at the ice trap to begin The Garland Ring.
The Garland Ring: Tanlorin recruitment walkthrough
- Claim the Crown Store companion entitlement before starting the quest.
- Free Tanlorin from the ice trap north of Vulkhel Guard and accept The Garland Ring.
- Speak with Tanlorin and follow their investigation to locate clues about Wisteria and Oleander.
- Gather the lilies and silver dust needed for the tracking mixture, following your quest markers.
- Meet Tanlorin beside the large rock west of Skywatch, where they prepare the resonating fluid.
- Take the prepared fluid and travel to the entrance of Toothmaul Gully in Auridon.
- Once inside, find a clear area to activate the tracker fly and follow it towards Wisteria. Continue the marked story objectives rather than fighting unrelated public-dungeon bosses.
- Resolve the final investigation and confrontation, then finish the closing dialogue to unlock the companion collectible.
The tracker fly won’t follow Wisteria’s magical resonance until you reach Toothmaul Gully. If nothing happens, check that you collected the fluid from Tanlorin after the alchemy step near Skywatch. Follow the quest marker to a clear place inside the dungeon and activate the tracker there.
Some public dungeon rooms include enemies unrelated to the recruitment task. You only need the quest’s actual objectives to finish The Garland Ring. The Tanlorin companion isn’t unlocked by simply clearing the public dungeon or receiving an unrelated achievement.
ESO Tanlorin Companion – The Garland Ring not showing: checks before restarting
First confirm that you claimed the companion in the Crown Store, not just that ESO Plus marks it as included. Look for an existing The Garland Ring entry in your Quest Journal. If there is no entry, inspect Collections for the introductory quest and return to the ice trap north of Vulkhel Guard.
If the Tanlorin companion quest appears stuck after a conversation, make sure the correct journal quest is selected and the marked interaction was completed. Leaving the area and returning or reloading the interface is less disruptive than immediately abandoning a long quest. Try reloading the interface or leaving and re-entering the area before deciding to abandon the quest.
Does Tanlorin remain yours after ESO Plus expires?
Bethesda says an ESO Plus member who claims a Crown Store companion retains the entitlement if the subscription later ends. That means the Tanlorin companion isn’t a temporary rental, provided you’ve actually claimed the item. Players who don’t subscribe can buy the entitlement with Crowns instead.
The recruitment takes place in Auridon, a base-game zone. That doesn’t remove the need for Crown Store ownership, but it does mean the Tanlorin companion does not require purchasing the Blackwood, High Isle or Necrom chapter simply to visit the quest location.
How to summon and equip the Tanlorin companion
Once The Garland Ring is complete, open Collections → Allies → Companions and activate Tanlorin. Assign the collectible to a Quickslot for convenience. On another character you may need to complete the initial recruitment quest again, even though the entitlement remains account-owned.
Tanlorin has Dragonknight- and Soul Magic-themed companion skills. You can equip companion-only weapons and armour for tank, healer or damage roles. A one-handed weapon and shield plus heavy armour supports tanking, while a restoration staff and healing skills are useful when your character needs support. The skills you slot matter more than the companion’s original look.
ESO Tanlorin Companion skills and rapport
The Tanlorin companion gains combat experience as you fight together. Their rapport separately changes through actions they approve or dislike, eventually unlocking more personal story content. Neither maximum rapport nor level 20 is required for the initial recruitment; complete The Garland Ring first, then develop your build as you explore.
