ESO Companion Locations: How to Unlock All Eight Companions

ESO companion locations cover eight recruitable companions: six tied to Blackwood, High Isle and Necrom, plus Tanlorin in Auridon and Zerith-var in Reaper’s March. The two Crown Store companions still need to be claimed through ESO Plus or purchased before you can start their recruitment quests.

Every ally has a recruitment quest you must complete before summoning them from Collections. The locations below cover each quest name, where to find its starting NPC and the chapter or ownership requirement, so you can recruit a companion without having to complete the whole zone storyline first.

These locations are starting points for the introductory quest, not an instruction to travel back there every time you need the companion. After completing the quest, activate the unlocked ally from your Collections menu.

Bastian and Mirri: Blackwood companions

For Bastian Hallix, travel south of Deepscorn Hollow on Blackwood’s southwest coast and find Zeechis to begin Competition and Contracts. Mirri Elendis begins Shattered and Scattered north of Doomvault Vulpinaz in northern Blackwood. Complete the relevant introduction to unlock each companion.

If you’re checking companions with Blackwood access, both can be recruited without first finishing the zone storyline. Bastian has Dragonknight-style abilities and Mirri uses Nightblade-themed skills, but either can equip companion gear to support several combat roles.

Ember and Isobel: High Isle companions

Find Ember near Tor Draioch in eastern High Isle for Tower Full of Trouble. Isobel Veloise waits at Castle Navire in southwest High Isle for Tournament of the Heart. Both recruitment quests require access to High Isle, but they are not locked behind completion of the main High Isle story.

These companions are useful if your character already owns the High Isle content. Ember has Sorcerer-themed spells and Isobel has Templar-themed skills. Both can be built differently depending on whether you need healing, protection or another damage dealer.

Sharp-as-Night and Azandar: Necrom companions

Sharp-as-Night’s quest, The Double Edge, starts outside the city of Necrom on the Telvanni Peninsula. Azandar al-Cybiades begins The Fateweaver Key at Cipher’s Midden in Apocrypha. These two companions require access to the Necrom content.

Of the Necrom companions, Sharp-as-Night brings Warden-themed combat options while Azandar has Arcanist-themed abilities. The companion you choose doesn’t force you into one build, because weapons, armour and active companion skills can be changed after recruitment.

Tanlorin and Zerith-var: Crown Store companions

Tanlorin begins The Garland Ring just north of Vulkhel Guard Wayshrine in Auridon, where you find the character caught in an ice trap. Zerith-var begins A Moonlit Shadow by speaking to Cantor Krin’ze south of Moonmont Shrine in Reaper’s March. Both are base-game zones.

Tanlorin and Zerith-var have an extra ownership step. Claim them in the Crown Store as an ESO Plus benefit or purchase them with Crowns before attempting their quests. Bethesda says a companion claimed while your ESO Plus membership is active remains owned if your subscription later ends.

The quest starters for Tanlorin and Zerith-var are separate from later personal quests unlocked by increasing rapport. Finishing The Garland Ring or A Moonlit Shadow gives you the ability to summon that ally; personal story progression happens afterwards.

Once you’ve completed an introduction, open Collections → Allies → Companions, select your ally and activate the collectible. You can Quickslot it for easier access. A character may need to do the initial recruitment quest again even if that companion is already owned by the account.

The recruitment locations remain the same for another character, but unlock state is worth checking if an ally seems to be missing. Some companions’ introductory quests can be reactivated through Collections or their quest givers. Don’t assume the ownership entitlement has vanished simply because an alt hasn’t completed recruitment.

Which ESO companions can enter dungeons?

Companions can help in eligible PvE dungeon groups, including while you explore with fewer than four players. They do not give a full four-player group a fifth participant: companions may be dismissed as human players fill the group. Some activities have additional restrictions, so the current dungeon’s rules decide whether you can summon one.

If you’re planning solo dungeon runs, see our Story Mode Dungeons and Solo Dungeon Rewards guides. The locations above help you recruit them, while your companion’s role, gear and abilities determine how useful they are in combat.

Companion equipment, levels and rapport

Companion weapons and armour are special gear, not the standard armour set pieces used by your player character. Companions gain combat experience and can reach level 20. Their rapport increases or decreases through actions they like or dislike, and can eventually unlock more personal quests.

After recruiting your favourites, check our gear, rapport, levelling and solo builds guides to decide which companion fits your own style.
