ESO Scribing lets you build a custom active skill by combining a Grimoire with three Scripts. Scribing is free for all ESO players: claim the Scribing unlock in the Crown Store, then complete the Scholarium introductory quests to use the altar. You don’t need to purchase Gold Road.

The introduction rewards the Wield Soul Grimoire. Completing the Scholarium wing quests unlocks additional Grimoires, Script sources and Luminous Ink drops. Luminous Ink also has its own unlock conditions, so here’s how to build your first skill without buying the wrong parts.

Start The Second Era of Scribing

Claim the free Scribing system in the Crown Store. Your character must be level 30 or have access to Champion Points. Speak to Adept Irnard Rirnil near the Mages Guild in Skingrad to start The Second Era of Scribing. Gold Road ownership isn’t required. The quest introduces the Scholarium, an ancient library accessible through the Eyevea area of the map. Follow the initial objectives, speak with the quest characters and learn how the Scribing Altar works. The Scribing Altar is in the Scholarium, not at ordinary crafting stations.

ESO Scribing- Create your first Wield Soul skill

The introductory quest grants the Wield Soul Grimoire so you can follow its guided first skill creation. At the Scribing Altar, you’ll combine a Grimoire with compatible Scripts. Don’t confuse the Grimoire, which determines the skill’s base animation and family, with the Scripts that control what it actually does. Once you’ve created the skill, you can place it on your normal ability bar. You don’t gain a separate unlimited skill bar for custom abilities.

Unlock the Wing of the Indrik

Complete The Wing of the Indrik for full access to the Scribing Altar. After completing the Wing of the Indrik, Chronicler Firandil becomes available in the Scholarium’s East Wing to sell eligible Grimoires and Scripts. Completing the Wing of the Indrik also enables rare Luminous Ink drops from defeated enemies across your account. If you cannot buy a particular Grimoire or an enemy isn’t dropping ink, check these quest steps before farming for hours.

How each Scholarium wing unlocks Script sources

QuestUnlock
The Wing of the IndrikChronicler Firandil, more Grimoires, and rare Luminous Ink from defeated enemies.
The Wing of the GryphonFocus Scripts from DLC delve dailies, Mages Guild dailies and PvP Rewards for the Worthy; Luminous Ink can also appear in heavy sacks.
The Wing of the DragonSignature Scripts from DLC world boss dailies, Fighters Guild dailies and Cyrodiil daily quests; this also unlocks the Class Mastery Script chase.
The Wing of the NetchAffix Scripts from selected world-event, Undaunted and Imperial City dailies, plus rare Luminous Ink from resource nodes.
The Wing of the CrowThe Soul Burst Grimoire, a skill point and a True-Sight Viewing emote on completing the finale.

The Indrik and Netch ink-drop unlocks apply account-wide after completing their quests. The daily activities that can reward Scripts depend on the relevant wing, so running an unrelated daily before that unlock won’t give you the Script type you’re looking for.

ESO Scribing- What the three Scripts actually do

Every Grimoire uses three Script slots: Focus, Signature and Affix. Focus determines the primary function of the skill, including targeting and resource considerations. Signature adds a special effect, often linked to a skill-line theme; Affix contributes a further benefit or effect. Not every combination works on every Grimoire, so preview the altar’s valid choices. Owning a Script doesn’t guarantee it can be applied to an unrelated weapon or skill.

Where to earn Focus, Signature and Affix Scripts

The Scribing quest wings unlock further ways of collecting the three Script types through supported activities and vendors. Additional Script drops can come from specific reward pools after the relevant unlocks, while selected purchases are available through the Scholarium system. Check which Focus, Signature or Affix slot a new Script occupies before travelling to acquire it. The Script knowledge you collect is tracked for each character, but the wing unlocks make their corresponding loot sources available across the account.

Luminous Ink and the exact cost

The first creation of a Scribed Skill needs three Luminous Ink because you are filling all three Script slots. If you later change only one Script, the redo costs one ink; changing two costs two. After The Wing of the Indrik, ink can rarely drop from enemies. After The Wing of the Netch, it can also rarely drop from resource harvesting. These are chances rather than guaranteed drops on each kill or node. Preview your combination before spending ink on the permanent Script changes.

Equip and test a Scribed Skill

Once the altar confirms the combination, finish the creation and open Skills. The new ability appears beneath its parent skill line, such as Bow for the Vault Grimoire. Put it on your bar, check the description and try it on a practice target. The Scholarium has training dummies in its West Wing for experimenting. Scribing doesn’t replace the other abilities or passives in that skill line; you’re adding one customised ability whose effects depend on your Scripts.

Scribing on another character

After fully unlocking the questline on one character, alts only need to complete The Second Era of Scribing for access to the core system. Purchases of Grimoires and Scripts already bought by another character can receive large discounts, according to ESO Support. You’ll still need to check which Scripts the new character has learned, its available Skill Points and the correct parent line. Save valuable ink for combinations you intend to use rather than replicating every experiment from your main.

Why the altar or ink drops aren’t working

Check the quest journal for The Wing of the Indrik and The Wing of the Netch, as each controls a different unlock. Full altar access requires Indrik; harvest-node ink drops require Netch. If a Grimoire is greyed out, hover over it to see its individual requirement. Check which Scholarium wings you’ve completed and whether the selected Scripts work with that Grimoire. Don’t buy an unrelated Crown Store upgrade to fix a blocked selection.
