ESO Crafting Motifs teach a character how to make armour and weapons in a particular visual style. You can find full motif books or individual chapters through quests, trading and loot, then use the learned styles when crafting eligible equipment.
The part that confuses people is the Outfit System. A motif learned on one character can unlock an account-wide appearance at Outfit Stations, even though another character might still be unable to craft the physical item in that style. Here’s how both systems work.
How to learn your first ESO Crafting Motifs
Every character starts knowing the racial crafting style of its original race. Other styles need motif books or chapters: find a motif in loot, receive it as a reward or buy it from another player, then use the book or page in your inventory to learn it. Motif knowledge is character-specific when crafting physical equipment, so read a rare motif on the character you want to make the equipment rather than spreading chapters across multiple crafters.
Crafting Motifs: full books versus chapters
Some styles have a complete book that teaches many pages together. Others drop as individual chapters for armour pieces or weapon categories. A single Boots chapter doesn’t unlock the matching chest or swords. Check your learned motif collection in the Lore Library or the crafting interface before buying missing chapters at a Guild Trader. Motif chapters can be valuable collectibles, so compare current local prices instead of buying every listing you see.

Crafting gear with learned Crafting Motifs
At a relevant crafting station, select the equipment type, materials, trait and visual style. Your character must know that motif, and you generally need the appropriate style material unless using an allowed substitute such as a Mimic Stone. Learning the style doesn’t automatically teach the item trait or the set’s crafting requirement. If the style is greyed out, check that this character personally read the motif book or chapter.
Why your outfit knows a motif your crafter doesn’t
A motif learned on one character also unlocks its appearance for the account-wide Outfit Styles collection. Any of your characters can use the unlocked look at an Outfit Station, even when they can’t craft new physical armour in it. That’s why a Sorcerer can wear a motif style as a cosmetic outfit after a Dragonknight learned the book, while still lacking the crafting knowledge for that motif on the Sorcerer.
Crafting Motifs and the Outfit Station
Find an Outfit Station, select the outfit slot and choose an appearance for each visible armour or weapon category. You can preview known looks, change colours and pay the displayed outfit-change gold cost or use an Outfit Change Token where supported. This cosmetic appearance sits over the equipment you’re actually wearing. Motifs are useful for both crafting and custom outfits, but the Outfit Station doesn’t convert your item’s set bonuses, trait or quality.
Motifs are different from Outfit Style pages
Some rewards are called Outfit Styles rather than Crafting Motifs. These cosmetic pages unlock an appearance in Collections and don’t provide the physical crafting recipe. If a page isn’t listed in your Lore Library’s Crafting Motifs section, check Collections → Outfit Styles. You need the actual crafting motif to make a sword in that style; a cosmetic outfit-only page may be sufficient if all you want is the look.

Where to farm and buy Crafting Motifs
Different styles drop from different zones, dungeon bosses, dailies or limited-time event rewards. Some are bound on pickup, while others can be traded. Guild Traders are useful for filling missing chapters, but prices vary sharply by style and server. Motif knowledge also matters for Master Writs: a commission requiring a specific style needs that crafting knowledge on the character doing the writ, not merely its account-wide outfit appearance.
ESO Crafting Motifs – Common Crafting Motifs problems
If a race-change token doesn’t teach the new race’s motif, that’s expected: characters retain their originally learned style and must find new books. If a crafted item uses a different look, double-check the selected style before pressing Craft. The selected motif determines the appearance of newly crafted equipment; changing the Outfit Station appearance doesn’t change which motif knowledge was used when creating that physical item.
