ESO Mages Guild is worth joining early, even if your character never carries a staff. Its skill line includes useful abilities and passives, but levelling it works differently from ordinary combat skills: you need to discover the glowing Lorebooks scattered around Tamriel.
You can start the guild story in your alliance’s first major city and then read books while travelling through zones you would be visiting anyway. Knowing which books count saves a lot of aimless searching.
How to join the ESO Mages Guild
Go to the Mages Guild hall in Vulkhel Guard in Auridon, Daggerfall in Glenumbra or Davon’s Watch in Stonefalls. Speak to the guild recruiter or Valaste and accept the invitation to join. The guild’s opening story quest is Long Lost Lore. You can belong to the Mages Guild, Fighters Guild and Undaunted at the same time; joining doesn’t lock you into one faction or change your class. Check the Guild section of Skills afterwards to confirm the line is unlocked.
ESO Mages Guild – Where to find the Lorebooks that count
Look for books with a purple glow rather than every normal readable book on a shelf. Shalidor’s Library in your Journal records recognised collections and which entries you’ve already found. The Mages Guild line progresses through discovering those special Lorebooks. Ordinary books can contain stories or recipes without giving guild reputation. If your progress doesn’t move when reading one, check whether it was a new Shalidor’s Library entry.

A quicker route through early ranks
Begin in your alliance’s starting zones, then sweep the main roads, ruins, towns and wayshrines in the next zone. Collect Lorebooks as you complete zone quests instead of teleporting across all of Tamriel for individual volumes. Finish collections when convenient for their completion bonuses. Using a Mages Guild ability or killing random enemies won’t increase your guild rank. A route based on confirmed book locations is much faster than treating every bookshelf as a potential rank-up.
ESO Mages Guild- How the guild quest line progresses
Long Lost Lore introduces Valaste and the guild’s investigation. Later quests become available as the line reaches the required ranks; for instance, Simply Misplaced follows after rank 2, and The Mad God’s Bargain requires rank 5 according to ESO Support. Shalidor or Valaste can direct you to the next step in a guildhall. If another quest isn’t appearing, look at your current Mages Guild rank before assuming an NPC is broken.
Mages Guild daily quests and which books count
Alvur Baren offers Mages Guild daily quests that send you to recover an item from a public dungeon. These are useful for rewards and additional guild progression, although Lorebooks remain the core way to raise the line. You can combine a public dungeon daily with a sweep of any unread Lorebooks in that zone. A quick daily quest and a short Lorebook route add up over time, especially if you finish each book collection for the bonus reputation.
ESO Mages Guild – What rank 10 unlocks
The skill line caps at rank 10. Along the way you can unlock abilities such as Magelight, Entropy and Fire Rune, plus passives and the Meteor Ultimate. Skill-line rank makes abilities available, but you still need Skill Points to purchase them. Once you have the line unlocked on a character, other characters on the account don’t automatically gain the same rank; each character has its own guild progression unless a specific purchase or catch-up system says otherwise.

Why reading another copy gives no progress
Some books have multiple spawn locations or copies, but reading a title already registered in Shalidor’s Library won’t award a second discovery. If the ESO Mages Guild experience bar hasn’t advanced, check the entry’s completion status. Make sure you are looking at the correct character’s journal too. Books for ordinary Eidetic Memory collections, quest notes and crafting recipes aren’t interchangeable with the special Lorebooks used for Mages Guild reputation.
Best routine for a fresh character
Join in the first city, complete Long Lost Lore when you’re ready, and open Shalidor’s Library before each new zone. Gather the nearby purple books while unlocking wayshrines and completing quests. If you want an ability such as Meteor, set that as a longer-term goal instead of trying to reach rank 10 before doing anything else. Each newly discovered purple Lorebook grants five reputation, completing a collection awards 20 more, and Alvur Baren’s daily awards 10. Collecting a complete group is more rewarding than picking up unrelated books at random.
