ESO Abecean Slaughterfish: How to Catch It for High Seas Master Angler

ESO High Seas of Tamriel

ESO Abecean Slaughterfish is one of four rare fish needed for the High Seas Master Angler achievement during the High Seas of Tamriel event. Despite its name, this isn’t a dangerous creature you need to defeat or a fish found in the game’s foul-water fishing spots. It’s a rare saltwater catch, available from special fishing holes introduced for the event.

Finding the right fishing area is the important part. The High Seas event has several activities around the Gold Coast, including ship battles and underwater exploration, but the fishing achievement takes place separately near the Riotous Redress. Once you’ve found the correct fishing holes, you can use ordinary saltwater bait and ESO’s fishing bonuses to improve your chances of landing the fish.

The ESO Abecean Slaughterfish location is the Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes off the coast of the Gold Coast, near the Anchorage for the Riotous Redress.

Travel to the Gold Coast and make your way towards Anvil. The Riotous Redress is the ship associated with the High Seas of Tamriel event, and its anchorage is the landmark you’re looking for.

Check the surrounding waters for fishing spots displaying the name Abecean Saltwater Fishing Hole.

These are special event fishing holes, separate from the ordinary saltwater spots found around the Gold Coast. The distinction matters because the High Seas Master Angler achievement specifically identifies the Abecean fishing holes as the source of its rare fish.

Once you’ve found an active hole, equip the correct bait and begin fishing. If the spot becomes exhausted, look for another active Abecean Saltwater Fishing Hole nearby.

You don’t need to travel to a different region or look for a separate Slaughterfish spawning area.

Best Bait for ESO Abecean Slaughterfish

The correct bait for ESO Abecean Slaughterfish is Worms or Chub.

Both are standard saltwater fishing bait in The Elder Scrolls Online. You can use either when fishing from Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes.

Worms can be obtained while gathering materials or purchased from other players. Chub is another saltwater bait option that can be acquired through fishing or trading.

It’s important to select one of these rather than using bait intended for foul water.

Ordinary Slaughterfish are associated with dangerous waters in ESO, but the High Seas achievement explicitly categorises Abecean Slaughterfish as a Salt catch.

Using foul-water bait because of the species name won’t improve your chances. Incorrect bait can also result in Used Bait, which wastes a fishing attempt.

There is no confirmed special bait that specifically targets Abecean Slaughterfish over the other three event fish.

How to Improve Your Chances of Catching ESO Abecean Slaughterfish

Fishing for ESO Abecean Slaughterfish uses ESO’s familiar rare-fish mechanics, which means you can prepare with several existing fishing bonuses.

Angler’s Instincts Champion Point

Angler’s Instincts is a slottable Champion Point star in the Craft discipline.

It increases your chance of catching higher-quality fish, providing a bonus comparable to fishing alongside another player.

If you’ve invested Champion Points in this star, make sure it’s actually equipped on your Champion Bar before starting.

Reel Technique Champion Point

Reel Technique is another Craft Champion Point star.

It reduces the time it takes for a fish to bite by 25%, allowing you to complete more fishing attempts during a session.

Reel Technique doesn’t specifically increase the chance of catching Abecean Slaughterfish, but the shorter waiting time makes repeated fishing attempts faster.

Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl

Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl is a special food that increases your chance of catching higher-quality fish.

Its fishing bonus is comparable to having another player at the same fishing hole and can stack with other similar bonuses.

You can craft the food using its recipe or obtain prepared portions through player trading.

This is particularly useful if you’re fishing alone and want to improve your chances without relying on a group.

Sharp-as-Night’s Fishing Perk

The companion Sharp-as-Night provides a fishing perk called Sharp’s Patience.

ZeniMax has confirmed that this perk improves the chance of catching trophy fish and slightly reduces the time spent fishing. It also works alongside Reel Technique and other fishing bonuses.

These bonuses improve normal fishing efficiency, but they don’t guarantee that the next rare catch will be Abecean Slaughterfish. You can still receive other fish while waiting for the one you need.

What If ESO Abecean Slaughterfish Isn’t Dropping?

If you’ve been fishing for a while without catching ESO Abecean Slaughterfish, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re missing an unlock or doing something wrong.

The High Seas achievement contains four different rare saltwater fish, and catching one you’ve already collected doesn’t complete another entry.

You might receive Pelican Eel or Pelagic Lanternfish several times before finding Abecean Slaughterfish.

First, check that the fishing hole is specifically named Abecean Saltwater Fishing Hole. Then confirm you’re using Worms or Chub rather than another bait type.

If both are correct, continue fishing from the event holes. There isn’t a documented separate location, bait combination or quest step that guarantees this particular species.

You can also check the achievement menu to make sure Abecean Slaughterfish hasn’t already registered without you noticing.

Does ESO Abecean Slaughterfish Require the High Seas Daily Quest?

ESO Abecean Slaughterfish is a fishing catch, not a reward for defeating Krelzimar or completing the Bounty of the Abecean Sea daily quest.

The High Seas event introduces several different activities, but its fishing achievement specifically requires catching rare fish from Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes.

You don’t have to defeat the underwater bosses to make a Slaughterfish drop from a fishing hole.

The event’s introductory quest, Raising the Riotous Redress, helps introduce the ship and surrounding activities. However, the High Seas Master Angler achievement doesn’t list completion of that quest or the daily as one of its requirements.

For the fish itself, concentrate on finding the named fishing holes rather than repeating ship battles or underwater encounters.

Does Abecean Slaughterfish Count Towards High Seas Master Angler?

Yes. Catching ESO Abecean Slaughterfish completes one of the four requirements for High Seas Master Angler.

The full achievement requires:

Each fish only needs to be caught once.

Completing High Seas Master Angler awards 5 achievement points. The achievement doesn’t list a separate mount or cosmetic reward.

It’s also separate from Flight of the Albatross, the event achievement associated with an Arcing Ornaug Energy collectible. High Seas Master Angler isn’t among the eight achievements required for Flight of the Albatross.

That means players working specifically towards the Suncleft Grotto Ornaug mount aren’t required to complete the fishing achievement.

ESO Abecean Slaughterfish and Golden Pursuits

Fishing for ESO Abecean Slaughterfish can also contribute towards the Set Sail on the High Seas Golden Pursuits campaign.

Two of the campaign’s objectives involve the same fishing locations:

  • Fish from Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes 10 times.
  • Fish from Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes 20 times.

You can work towards these objectives while hunting rare fish because both activities take place at the event fishing holes.

The Golden Pursuits fishing tasks don’t require catching Abecean Slaughterfish specifically. You’re working towards two different objectives at the same location.

If you’ve already completed the Golden Pursuits fishing requirements, you can continue trying for the rare fish needed for Master Angler.

When Does ESO Abecean Slaughterfish Become Unavailable?

High Seas of Tamriel runs from September 30 until October 14, 2026.

The special Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes are associated with this event, so October 14 is the deadline to work towards the achievement during its confirmed event window.

If Abecean Slaughterfish is your final missing catch, it’s worth allowing time for multiple fishing sessions rather than expecting it to appear after a certain number of casts.

Catching ESO Abecean Slaughterfish doesn’t involve a hidden boss, special equipment or complicated quest chain. The challenge is finding the correct event fishing holes and getting the rare catch you need.

Head to the Riotous Redress anchorage near Anvil, equip Worms or Chub and fish from the Abecean Saltwater Fishing Holes. Fishing bonuses can make the process faster, while your achievement menu will show when the catch has registered. Once you’ve collected all four required species, High Seas Master Angler is complete.
