The Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo lets owners of Valve’s classic shooter play two sections of Orbifold Studios’ ray-traced remaster with updated NVIDIA graphics options. The latest technical update adds DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, additional Multi Frame Generation settings and a beta frame-generation performance mode.
The demo covers Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt, and you need the original Half-Life 2 on Steam to play. NVIDIA’s October update improves the graphics features in those sections; it isn’t the launch of the finished remaster. Here’s how to install it and switch on the options your PC supports.
How to download the Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo

First, make sure your Steam account owns the original Half-Life 2. Then open the Half-Life 2 RTX Steam product page and select the free Install Now option. It is a community-made mod from Orbifold Studios, distributed separately from the base game.
The playable demo was released on 18 March 2025. NVIDIA announced the Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo graphics update on 28 October 2026, so the March date on Steam is the original demo release, not the date of the latest rendering features.
Which chapters are included in the Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo?
You can play Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt. Ravenholm features the familiar zombie-filled streets and Father Grigori, while Nova Prospekt showcases the prison environments with rebuilt materials and path-traced lighting.
These are demo sections, not the complete Half-Life 2 campaign. The Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo gives you a preview of the team’s remastering work; the free download does not contain the rest of the game.
How to enable DLSS 5 in the Half-Life 2 RTX demo
NVIDIA provides the same RTX Remix menu route used by Portal with RTX. After updating your graphics driver and launching the Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo, follow these steps:
- Press Alt+X while in the game.
- Choose Developer Settings Menu.
- Expand DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering.
- Enable and adjust the setting if your GPU supports it.
- Use the General graphics menu to find Multi Frame Generation and Frame Generation Performance Mode options.
- Apply or save the changes using the displayed menu controls.
Although NVIDIA advertises DLSS 5, the actual option inside RTX Remix is labelled DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. It enhances lighting and material detail in the rendered image, rather than changing how the shooter plays.
Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo PC requirements
Steam lists the following minimum specifications for the demo: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti with DLSS enabled, and 50GB of available storage.
Its recommended specification increases the CPU to an Intel i7-10700 or Ryzen 5 5600 and the GPU to a GeForce RTX 4070, while keeping 16GB RAM and 50GB storage. These describe running the demo, not eligibility for every new RTX Remix feature.
The Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo uses NVIDIA’s separate hardware rules for the new settings. NVIDIA lists DLSS 3D-Guided Neural Rendering and the new 5X/6X Multi Frame Generation settings for supported GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. The beta Frame Generation Performance Mode, Preset C, is listed for RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs and compatible RTX Spark laptops.
What’s changed in the October RTX Remix update?
Beyond neural rendering and frame generation, the Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo receives newer RTX Remix rendering options including Sparse Rendering, SHaRC and changes that improve jagged self-shadowing on curved or low-detail objects. These are graphics and compatibility upgrades, not a reworked story, new weapons or extra missions.
NVIDIA also confirms support for RTX Spark Windows on ARM devices. For other PCs, use the GPU specifications above rather than assuming every Windows laptop will run the demo.
What if DLSS 5 is missing or the demo won’t launch?
Start with the official Steam version, check that your base Half-Life 2 licence is on the same account, and verify that the demo finished updating. Then check the NVIDIA driver. RTX Remix 1.6 release notes specify driver 616.92 or later as the baseline for that runtime.
If the Half-Life 2 RTX DLSS 5 demo runs but the neural-rendering or 6X option is missing, check the GPU generation. The RTX 3060 Ti meets Steam’s minimum game specification but doesn’t support DLSS 5 neural rendering. An unofficial patched executable won’t add the hardware it needs.
The same Alt+X controls are also available in Portal with RTX. If you want to know how mod makers add those features to other games, our RTX Remix 1.6 mod guide explains the runtime separately from the creator toolkit.
