Xbox Free Play Days Progress: Do Saves and Achievements Carry Over?

Xbox Free Play Days progress can continue when you buy a game after its free weekend. Xbox confirms that achievements and Gamerscore earned during the trial carry over. If you return to a compatible version using the same account, you can also continue from your existing game save.

The difference is between owning the game and keeping what you’ve earned. Free Play Days gives you temporary permission to launch a title. When that permission expires, your Xbox profile and supported save data remain available for the next time you play.

Does Xbox Free Play Days progress carry over after purchase?

Yes. You can buy the game after the trial and pick up where you left off with a compatible save. Xbox Wire also specifically confirms that the Gamerscore and achievements earned during Free Play Days are retained.

Use the same Xbox profile when you return. A trial doesn’t create a separate account or require a special save transfer. If you switch platforms, make sure the game supports cross-save before expecting the same save file to appear.

What happens to achievements and Gamerscore?

No. Achievements and Gamerscore are attached to your Xbox account, not the temporary Store offer. Once earned, they remain visible on your profile after the weekend finishes.

Xbox Free Play Days progress includes more than achievements, though. In-game saves are handled by each game, while your Xbox achievement record belongs to your account. Keep the right profile signed in when you buy and play again.

How to keep Xbox Free Play Days progress when you buy

Sign into the Microsoft account you used for the trial, purchase or otherwise access the matching game, and launch it. Load your existing save if the game supports continuing from that version. Your achievements don’t need to be manually imported.

On a shared Xbox, make sure you’re using the profile that originally played the game. Achievements earned by one family member don’t transfer to somebody else’s Gamertag just because both accounts use the same console.

What happens to Xbox Free Play Days progress when the weekend ends?

When a Free Play Days offer ends, the temporary game licence ends with it. The files may still be installed, but the game can ask you to purchase it before it launches. That message is about access, not proof that your save has been erased.

Don’t delete saved data to solve a licence problem. First check whether the promotion has finished and whether the account owns the game or has another licence to play it.

Can you continue with Game Pass instead of buying?

Yes, if the game is separately included with your active Game Pass tier. A Free Play Days weekend doesn’t automatically add that title to your subscription’s catalogue. Xbox Free Play Days progress is tied to your account and saved game, while launching the game depends on your current access.

If your Game Pass entitlement later changes, you may need to buy the game to keep playing. Your earned achievements stay attached to your account in the meantime.

Can Xbox Free Play Days progress sync between PC and console?

It depends on the game. Some Xbox titles support saves across console and Windows; others use separate versions and progression systems. A Free Play Days offer on both platforms doesn’t by itself mean every save is shared between them.

To carry Xbox Free Play Days progress from one device to another, first check whether that game supports cross-save or Xbox Play Anywhere. Using the same Microsoft account is a good starting point, but the game’s own compatibility determines what transfers.

Dead by Daylight is one example from the October 2026 promotion. Xbox made the console version free to try through 2 November without Game Pass, giving players time to earn achievements and try Halloween matches before buying.

If you purchase a compatible version afterwards, your Xbox achievements remain with the profile used during that trial. The game itself must still be owned or available through another licence to play once the free period finishes.
