Trigger Module Selection Box J lets you choose one of 42 Trigger Modules in The First Descendant, including Prepping in the Dark from the October 2026 update. If you’re missing a particular module, it’s a far more predictable reward than opening random Trigger Module Loot and hoping the right item appears.
Nexon added the Trigger Module Selection Box J to several mission and battlefield reward pools with Update 1.4.5. There is also a confirmed one-time way to earn one during the October Descendant Overhaul Mission. The important questions are which activities award it, exactly what you can select and whether the event version differs from the similarly named Box I.
How to get Trigger Module Selection Box J
The Trigger Module Selection Box J is available as a reward associated with the activities listed in Nexon’s updated patch notes. Not every activity uses the same reward structure, and the notes do not give a universal box drop rate. Before repeating one, check the mission reward screen for the box rather than treating its inclusion in a broader reward pool as a guaranteed completion drop.
| Activity or location | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Axion Plains | Relevant battlefield content and listed rewards |
| Wall Crasher | The Axion Plains encounter rewards |
| Void Vessel: Medium-Sized Facility Zone | The relevant Void Vessel rewards |
| Supermassive Receptor | Mission rewards |
| Forbidden Sanctuary | Mission rewards |
| Exposed Underwater Base | Mission rewards |
| Legion Laboratory | Mission rewards |
| Bastion of Immortality | Mission rewards |
| Bounty Operations | Relevant operation rewards |
| Karel’s Mothership | Mission reward pool |
| Cradle of Evolution | Mission reward pool |
Those are the listed activities for Trigger Module Selection Box J, but the table does not rank them by reward chance. Check the reward preview before each farm and favour content you can finish reliably. The October patch does not provide comparable per-activity chances for the selection box.

Get a box from October’s Descendant Overhaul Growth Mission III
The most useful targeted Trigger Module Selection Box J reward during the event is Descendant Overhaul Growth Mission III. Its requirement is to unlock a Trigger Module for Freyna, Gley or Enzo. Complete that objective and the reward is one Box J, allowing you to choose one module from the entire listed selection.
The October event began with the October 15 update and ends November 16, 2026 at 10:59 PM PST. Its Special Missions can be claimed once, so this isn’t a repeatable daily box farm. Nexon also says the relevant Trigger Module unlock objective can complete automatically when the qualifying progression was already done, so check the mission board before starting the unlock again.
To find the event, open Game Menu (ESC) → Event or use the Descendant Mission Board and its NPC, BB-On. Our October Overhaul Missions guide has the other event objectives and rewards, while the HQ Special Orders guide covers the related weekly mission activity.
Every Trigger Module Selection Box J choice

Prepping in the Dark is the key October addition. It grants Gap when a Ground DoT skill deals damage, then Ambush Setup when a Concealment skill is used while Gap is active. Patch 1.4.6 removed its previous 18-second cooldown. If you’re choosing Trigger Module Selection Box J specifically for that module, our Prepping in the Dark guide explains the current trigger sequence before you commit to a choice.
Is Box J different from Trigger Module Selection Box I?
Yes. Trigger Module Selection Box J includes Prepping in the Dark, while the separately listed Trigger Module Selection Box I does not. The October events offer different versions, so check the exact box name before choosing a reward. The main Descendant Overhaul Mission awards Box J for Growth Mission III; the lower-Mastery-Rank Growth Support event awards Box I for its Trigger Module unlock objective.
The Freyna rework, Gley rework and Enzo rework offer context for players deciding which character to build next. If you already know your intended Trigger Module, the selection box removes the randomness of a multi-option loot drop. If you’re undecided, read the actual module effect first, because the value of an unlock depends on the skills and build you plan to use.

Box J versus Trigger Module Loot L
It’s easy to mix up Trigger Module Selection Box J with Trigger Module Loot L. The first gives you a choice from the listed modules. The second is a loot reward containing four possible module types after the October update, one of which is Prepping in the Dark. They don’t have interchangeable probabilities or contents.
Nexon lists Trigger Module Loot L completion chances of 11.5% in Cradle of Evolution, 48.5% in Karel’s Mothership Normal and 64.7% in Mothership Hard. Those percentages are for obtaining Loot L, not for its individual Prepping in the Dark result or for Trigger Module Selection Box J. The Cradle of Evolution walkthrough explains one of the dungeons, and the Cradle rewards guide is useful if you’re weighing several materials.
Which module should you choose?
If your goal is Prepping in the Dark, choosing it directly from Trigger Module Selection Box J avoids hoping for it inside the four-item Loot L pool. If you need another named Trigger Module for your current build, check whether it’s listed above and whether you already own it before spending the box. The official notes provide the box contents, not a single best choice for every Descendant and playstyle.
Remember that the event’s guaranteed Box J is one-time. You can still check the listed content rewards outside that event, but don’t count on an undisclosed drop rate or assume the same chance applies across every activity. For an efficient plan, claim the event reward where eligible, check your current module inventory, then farm the specific additional resources your chosen build actually needs.
