Ocarina Songs Switch 2: How Music Controls Work in the Remake

Ocarina songs Switch 2 can be performed with normal button controls, so the remake keeps a direct controller method for learned melodies. Nintendo also adds microphone recognition and support for real ocarina input as optional ways to trigger songs.

The songs still matter to the adventure itself. Nintendo says learned melodies can open new paths, change day to night and perform other familiar progression functions.

You can hum into the Switch 2 microphone

The built-in microphone can listen for a melody Link has learned. Hum the song within range of the console and, when it is recognised, Link performs it on his ocarina in the game.

This makes Ocarina songs Switch 2 more playful without forcing voice input. If you are in a quiet room, on public transport or simply do not want to hum at your console, the standard button method remains available.

Real ocarinas can work too

Nintendo has announced a playable anniversary ocarina and a HORI electric ocarina for later in 2026. Either lets you perform a melody out loud for the Switch 2’s microphone to hear. You don’t need a cable, a special adaptor or one of these official instruments to play Link’s songs.

That makes Ocarina songs Switch 2 a little more fun for anyone who owns an instrument. You can try playing a tune yourself, but the regular button controls are still there when you want them.

The in-game ocarina is different from ZELDA NOTES

ZELDA NOTES Play Ocarina is different. That feature lives in the Nintendo Switch App on a compatible smartphone, where you can play notes on a touchscreen, follow a score, listen to automatic performances and create songs to share by QR code.

Ocarina songs Switch 2 inside the actual game are the learned melodies tied to Link’s adventure. The ZELDA NOTES instrument is a companion feature, not the only way to play songs for progression.

Why this matters in the remake

Music is central to Ocarina of Time, so being able to play an actual melody into the microphone is a lovely addition. It gives players another way to interact with something Link has always done in the story, without turning the game into a rhythm challenge.

For returning players, Ocarina songs Switch 2 should feel familiar in purpose but much more flexible in how they are performed.

Do you need a microphone or Nintendo Switch Online?

No special microphone accessory is needed. The Nintendo Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, and the normal controller method remains available for Ocarina songs Switch 2. Humming and real-instrument playback are optional ways to perform a melody, not a replacement for the usual buttons.

This is not a Voice Chat feature. Recognising a tune through the console’s microphone does not require joining a call or signing up to Nintendo Switch Online. ZELDA NOTES on a compatible phone is also a separate companion feature, not a requirement for playing Link’s songs.

Which songs can the microphone recognise?

Nintendo describes the microphone responding to melodies Link has learned. That is the confirmed behaviour. The final song inputs and acquisition steps for this version need to be checked in the finished game before using button sequences written for the Nintendo 64 original.

Returning players will remember songs such as Zelda’s Lullaby, Saria’s Song, Epona’s Song, Sun’s Song, Song of Time and Song of Storms. Those are the original game’s melodies, not a claim that every remake button sequence is identical. Their functions, locations and new controls should be checked against the final release.

Are anniversary ocarinas required?

Both anniversary instruments are optional. Nintendo’s playable version and the electric HORI model are planned for later in 2026, after the game goes on sale. You can use the existing button controls from launch, or try the microphone option without buying an accessory.

The appeal of Ocarina songs Switch 2 is having a choice. The songs still guide Link through the adventure, whether you perform one on the buttons, hum it or play it with an instrument nearby.
