Control Resonant Aberrant Weapon Explained: Forms, Combos and Upgrades

The Control Resonant Aberrant weapon is Dylan Faden’s shapeshifting melee weapon and the center of the game’s close-range combat system. Remedy has confirmed Hammer, Blades, Scythe and Fists as forms, while deliberately keeping additional forms secret until players encounter them.

Unlike Jesse’s Service Weapon in the first Control, the Control Resonant Aberrant weapon pushes the sequel toward melee combat. Its forms are combined with Dylan’s supernatural abilities, Talents and combo system so players can build around speed, range, heavy attacks or more specialized synergies.

What is the Control Resonant Aberrant weapon?

The Aberrant is described by Remedy as an otherworldly shapeshifting melee weapon. Dylan can transform it between different forms rather than carrying a conventional arsenal of separate weapons. That makes the Control Resonant Aberrant weapon both a combat tool and one of the main progression systems.

Remedy first presented the weapon as a key part of Dylan’s role in the sequel, then expanded on the system in its gameplay breakdowns. It can switch between distinct forms during combat, allowing one build to cover very different attack rhythms without turning the game into a traditional loot-heavy weapon swap system.

All confirmed Aberrant forms

  • Hammer
  • Blades
  • Scythe
  • Fists

Those are the Control Resonant Aberrant weapon forms Remedy has publicly named. The developer has also said there are other forms it is not revealing before launch. Any longer “all forms” list published before those are shown would be speculation.

The known forms already signal the intended range. Hammer suggests slower, heavier impact; Blades point toward faster close-range attacks; Scythe changes the weapon’s reach and silhouette; and Fists turn the Aberrant into a more direct brawling tool. Exact damage values and every combo should wait for the finished game.

Primary Forms, Secondary Forms and Combo Enders

The deeper Control Resonant Aberrant weapon system is not only about selecting a shape. Remedy says the weapon shifts between distinct Primary and Secondary Forms and includes powerful Combo Enders, giving players ways to tailor speed, range and combat role within one build.

The March combat breakdown also explains the wider momentum loop. Melee hits restore the resource used by combat abilities, abilities can stun enemies and open them to executions, and executions temporarily boost melee damage. The Aberrant is therefore connected directly to Dylan’s supernatural toolkit rather than sitting beside it as a separate system.

How do you unlock Aberrant forms?

Remedy says you expand the Control Resonant Aberrant weapon by unlocking new forms as you progress. The developer has not published a complete form-by-form unlock table ahead of launch, so exact mission names, currencies or boss requirements should not be invented.

Progression takes place through the Gap, the dreamlike space tied to Dylan’s psyche. Weapon Forms are one of the three core build pillars Remedy identifies there, alongside supernatural combat abilities and Talents. The Gap is also where you can work on upgrades and test builds.

Can you switch Aberrant forms during combat?

Yes. The Control Resonant Aberrant weapon is built around transformation and loadout choice rather than one fixed shape. Remedy’s gameplay footage shows Dylan using multiple forms, and the studio says you can equip chosen weapon forms and abilities to create the combat setup you want before heading into encounters.

The exact number of forms you can have active at once and every input combination may depend on the final control scheme, but the core idea is confirmed: the Aberrant is meant to change shape as part of normal play, not only at a crafting station or between missions.

What carries into New Game Plus?

Control Resonant Aberrant weapon upgrades carry into New Game Plus. Remedy confirms that your Aberrant upgrades persist along with health and combat-resource improvements, unlocked supernatural abilities, Talents and Artifacts. Traversal abilities are the major exception because they remain tied to story progression.

New Game Plus also adds new talent nodes and greater build flexibility. That gives the Control Resonant Aberrant weapon more room to interact with advanced combinations on a second run rather than simply starting the same progression curve with higher stats.
