Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode is the toughest difficulty option added by Title Update 1.0.8 on October 27, 2026. Enemies deal 1.8 times their normal ground-combat damage, parry timing is tighter and the usual protection from instant death is removed. Stealth, naval battles and underwater activities also become more punishing.

You do not have to restart the campaign or begin New Game+ to use it. Ubisoft confirms that Nightmare can be switched on regardless of story progress, and that combat, stealth, naval combat and activities can be adjusted separately. Here are the exact changes you should expect from Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode.

How to Enable Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode

Open the game’s Options menu and find the gameplay difficulty settings. Black Flag Resynced has four separate difficulty controls: Combat, Stealth, Naval Combat and Activities. Set Nightmare for the part of the game you want to make harder. You can change the settings while playing rather than beginning a new save.

Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode sits above the existing Forgiving, Intended and Hard settings. You can turn it on for combat while leaving stealth, naval combat or activities at a lower level. That makes it possible to try the new challenge without making every part of the game equally punishing.

All Ground Combat Changes in Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode

Combat mechanicNightmare change
Enemy damage1.8x normal damage
ParryingSmaller timing window
Attack warningWhite glint removed from enemy attacks
Ranged enemiesShoot more frequently
One-shot death protectionDisabled, including risk from bullets and explosives

That 1.8x enemy damage is only part of the difference. Without the white glint, you’ll need to watch how an enemy moves instead of waiting for a flash to time your parry. Gunmen also shoot more often, making your position in a crowded fight far more important.

The one-shot death safeguard is also disabled. Edward can be killed outright by a powerful hit even with plenty of health remaining. Gunfire and explosives are particularly dangerous, so deal with ranged enemies early instead of treating your health bar as a guarantee of survival.

How Nightmare Changes Stealth

Guards detect Edward much faster and remain in an investigation state for longer after something alerts them. They can hear him whenever he moves faster than a walk. Sprinting through a supposedly quiet route is therefore much riskier, even when you are just trying to pass between hiding spots.

Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode also raises the clearance needed for elevated hiding spots from four metres to six metres. A low roof or ledge that kept Edward unseen on another setting can leave him exposed here. Look for higher vantage points before moving over a guarded area.

For tailing and infiltration missions, keep Edward walking near guards and choose routes with fewer direct sightlines. You’ll have less time to recover from being spotted, and an alerted guard will keep investigating longer before returning to patrol.

Naval Battles in Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode

All ships deal increased damage under the Nightmare naval setting. That includes hostile encounters that were already dangerous at higher enemy ranks. Upgrade the Jackdaw before taking on especially hard fleets, and pay attention to broadside timing rather than treating your stored upgrades as a guarantee of survival.

That increased naval damage can stack with the harder opponents you meet in later New Game+ cycles. You can still use Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode on your first campaign, so replaying the story isn’t required to test the ship-combat changes.

Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode: Diving and Harpooning

  • Underwater sharks deal more damage.
  • Sea urchins and jellyfish inflict twice as much damage.
  • The oxygen meter drains faster during diving sections.
  • Wildlife encountered while harpooning deals more damage.

The underwater and harpooning changes belong to Activities. You can keep combat on Nightmare and lower Activities separately if you want difficult duels without making diving or hunting as dangerous. Faster oxygen loss makes planning a route back to air especially important.

Can You Change Nightmare Back to Hard?

Yes. Ubisoft confirms that the difficulty controls can be changed during play and that each of the four categories is independent. If a particular activity becomes frustrating, lower its own setting rather than weakening everything else. For instance, combat can remain on Nightmare while naval or stealth difficulty is reduced.

Changing the difficulty doesn’t require a fresh save. If a particular encounter becomes too much, adjust its category and carry on with your current campaign.

Is Nightmare the Same as New Game Plus?

No. New Game+ resets the campaign while retaining your weapons, resources, ship upgrades and other progression. Its five possible repeat cycles increase the prevalence of elite enemies and powerful ships. Nightmare changes how individual systems behave, including the damage multiplier, enemy awareness and deadly environmental hazards.

You can combine New Game+ and Nightmare, but they are independent options. Start with Nightmare in one difficulty category and see how it feels before switching all four to the highest setting.

For a first test of Black Flag Resynced Nightmare Mode, start with a smaller encounter so you can learn the faster enemy attacks and tighter parry window. You can then raise the other difficulty categories as you become comfortable with them.
