Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Mewtwo Timed Research is now available, giving Trainers around the world a remarkably valuable set of free rewards including a Master Ball, 500 Mega Mewtwo Y Mega Energy and a special Mewtwo with maxed-out stats. The anniversary Mewtwo also comes with a Special Background and has the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y.

The research is part of Pokémon GO’s continuing 10th anniversary celebrations and is available until Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time. Because this is Timed Research rather than permanent Special Research, every task must be completed and every reward claimed before that deadline.

The Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Mewtwo Timed Research contains just one stage and two tasks, making this one of the easiest opportunities to earn a Master Ball and a highly valuable Mewtwo.

The first task simply requires Trainers to catch 10 Pokémon. Completing it awards one Master Ball, an item that guarantees a successful catch when used.

The second task requires players to power up Pokémon 10 times and rewards 500 Mega Mewtwo Y Mega Energy. The power-ups do not need to be performed on Mewtwo, so using low-level Pokémon with inexpensive Stardust and Candy costs is an easy way to complete the task.

After both tasks have been finished, the Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Mewtwo Timed Research rewards the special Mewtwo encounter.

What Is Special About the 10th Anniversary Mewtwo?

The Mewtwo available through the Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Mewtwo Timed Research is very different from an ordinary research encounter.

Pokémon GO specifically confirms that the Mewtwo has maxed-out stats and a Special Background. A perfect Mewtwo has 15 Attack, 15 Defense and 15 HP IVs, commonly referred to by players as a 100% IV Mewtwo or a “hundo.”

The anniversary Mewtwo also arrives with the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y. Under the current Mega Evolution system, the third Mega Level is Max Level. Pokémon GO now has an additional Super Max Level above it, so this reward should not be confused with a Super Max Mega Mewtwo Y.

That still removes a significant amount of Mega Level progression from the process and makes the research Mewtwo particularly useful for players building a strong Mega Mewtwo Y.

How to Get the Free Mewtwo in Pokémon GO

To get the anniversary Mewtwo, open Pokémon GO while the Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Mewtwo Timed Research is active and check the Timed Research available on the Events section of the Research menu.

You then need to:

Catch 10 Pokémon.
Power up Pokémon 10 times.
Claim the individual task rewards.
Claim the Mewtwo encounter before the research expires.

There is no paid event ticket required for the worldwide research. Pokémon GO describes it as free Timed Research for Trainers around the world.

The research originally became available on August 12 at 4:00 p.m. PDT and remains available through September 6 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Trainers joining after the initial release can therefore still complete it while it remains active.

It is worth completing the research well before the final evening. Timed Research disappears when its deadline passes, and Pokémon GO explicitly states that both the tasks and rewards must be completed and claimed before the expiry time.

Times Square Mewtwo Trainers Get Different Rewards

There is one important exception affecting Trainers who caught a Mewtwo during the in-person Times Square event on July 9.

Pokémon GO has confirmed that those Trainers receive a Mewtwo with different stats and different rewards from the worldwide Pokémon GO 10th Anniversary Mewtwo Timed Research. Live research information also shows that eligible Times Square attendees receive 30 Mewtwo Candy from the Catch 10 Pokémon task instead of the Master Ball.

Pokémon GO has separately confirmed that Mewtwo with the Times Square background will become available again at some point in the future, although no return date has been announced.
