Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for online matches and Friend Lobby, but not for the game itself. You can play local sports, explore Wuhu Island, climb Island Crown ranks and earn Spocco Points offline without paying for a subscription.

The important question is how you intend to play. A group sharing one Switch 2 can play supported sports without a membership; friends connecting from separate consoles need Nintendo Switch Online. Here’s exactly what Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online membership gives you and how to check it if the online menus aren’t showing.

Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online: which modes need it?

Activity Paid membership?
Local games on one Switch 2 No
Island Crown against CPU opponents No
Wuhu Island sightseeing No
Earning Spocco Points offline No
Pro League ranked online matches Yes
Casual Online Play Yes
Friend Lobby with distant friends Yes
Save Data Cloud Yes, subject to eligibility

Those membership rules are confirmed by Nintendo’s official game information and its Version 1.1.0 update notes. Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online access is only needed when connecting through the service, not as an entry fee for the twelve sports or the single-player campaign.

What can you do without Nintendo Switch Online?

You can play the nine competitive sports in offline settings, compete with CPU opponents in Island Crown and challenge Island Champions and Legends. The three leisure activities, Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane, let you explore Wuhu Island and complete sightseeing tasks. None of that relies on online matchmaking.

Local multiplayer is also available for up to four people on one console in compatible sports. Additional Joy-Con 2 controllers may be needed. You can earn Spocco Points and spend them on Item Center cosmetics offline, although players using guest profiles may not keep individual reward balances. The local multiplayer guide explains how to set up players correctly.

What do the online modes add?

With Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can choose Pro League to climb online sport rankings or Casual Online Play to match without recording wins and losses. Both use nine competitive sports rather than the three leisure activities.

Friend Lobby is designed for private groups. Up to eight players can join from different consoles, with a maximum of two from one Switch 2. The group may split into huddles to play separate sports simultaneously. Friend Lobby offers all twelve activities, and a temporary Invite ID allows players to join even if they aren’t on each other’s Nintendo friends list.

For a walkthrough of Invite IDs and different modes, see Online Multiplayer. The player-count guide explains why eight in a lobby doesn’t mean eight players in a single Boxing or Tennis match.

How to get online play working

If you’re subscribed but can’t see the online modes, check that the active Switch 2 profile has a linked Nintendo Account and eligible Nintendo Switch Online membership. Then update the game. Nintendo released Version 1.1.0 on October 21, 2026, and explicitly requires that update for online features.

On the HOME Menu, highlight Nintendo Switch Sports Resort without opening it, press the + or – button, select Software Update and then Over the Internet. Wait for the download and restart the game. You’ll need an internet connection and enough storage space. If Nintendo returns a connection error, follow the support page for the displayed error code.

Do you need internet access for offline play?

Local sports, Island Crown and exploration don’t require an ongoing connection to an online match server. Downloading software, installing updates, digital-purchase licensing and optional cloud saves can still involve internet access. Those are separate from paying for Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Save Data Cloud is listed among Nintendo Switch Online features, but the absence of cloud backup doesn’t mean you can’t keep playing offline. The game saves locally according to the console’s normal save-data arrangements. For the mode list, see All Twelve Sports and Island Crown Mode.

Is a Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online subscription worth it?

If your main goal is online competition, Casual Online or private games with distant friends, membership is required. If you mainly play with family on one console, want to explore Wuhu Island or enjoy offline Island Crown, try that content first before subscribing.

Sports Resort Nintendo Switch Online membership unlocks connected modes; it doesn’t unlock a different set of offline sports. The free Version 1.1.0 update and a linked account are also required for online play, so confirm both before assuming an expired subscription is the only cause of a missing menu.
