Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Island Crown Mode Explained covers the new offline progression mode where players rise through the ranks in each sport and work toward battles with Island Champions and island Legends.
Island Crown is the offline competition for nine sports. You start at 20th place in each sport and climb towards the number-one Island Champion, with Legends presenting a further challenge. The three Wuhu Island leisure activities have no Island Crown ladder. The main game guide compares ranked sports with the three leisure activities.
How Island Crown mode works

The most important detail is that Island Crown is an offline mode. Nintendo describes it separately from online matchmaking, so players who want a structured solo challenge do not need to rely on competitive online play to make progress through its ranks.
Each of the nine sports has a separate ranking, starting at 20th and progressing towards first place. Winning enough matches in succession can occasionally jump you forward by five positions, according to a hands-on review. Boxing, Table Tennis, Archery, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball, Golf and Thumb Wrestling are included; the other three activities are not. Island Crown offers separate ranking ladders for nine competitive sports.

Which sports are in Island Crown mode?
Island Champions are the major opponents players can challenge as they climb. Nintendo also mentions island Legends beyond them, suggesting a higher tier of competition after the standard Champion encounters. Nintendo has confirmed Matt among the tough Legend opponents. Exact techniques and unlock requirements vary by sport, so look at the on-screen rank and opponent information as you climb.
Island Crown gives you an offline ladder of CPU opponents, and playing matches also earns Spocco Points. Spend those at the Item Center on outfits and accessories.
How to reach Champions and Legends
The nine competitive sports have individual offline ladders, so you can pursue Boxing or Archery ranks without affecting your Tennis or Golf standing. Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane have their own sightseeing challenges and are not part of the rankings. Friend Lobby supports eight people across multiple consoles, with up to two on one Switch 2.
The Champions are named opponents at the top of each sport’s ladder. After beating them, you can face harder Legends, including Matt. Check each challenge’s result screen for rewards.
Island Crown mode rewards
The mode is especially useful for players who enjoyed the motion controls but wanted more purpose when playing alone. Instead of depending on online Pro League ranks, Resort has an offline ladder that can be worked through sport by sport.
Exploration and competition overlap throughout the resort. The same game that lets players hunt for flowers and photos also uses Wuhu Island as the setting for 12 sports, while Island Crown adds a structured offline ladder for players who want a clear challenge.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launched on 22 October 2026. Island Crown covers nine competitive sports, while the three leisure activities have their own sightseeing challenges.
Where to start in Island Crown mode
To begin Island Crown mode, choose one of the nine competitive sports and challenge the first CPU opponent. Each sport starts at 20th place. Keep winning to climb the rankings, face its Champion and eventually take on the tougher Legend.
The Island Champions guide names the opponents near the top of the ladders, while the online multiplayer guide explains the separate Pro League.
