Darktide Prophet of Decay is the new boss at the end of Spillway and the climax of the Depths of the Damned campaign. Fatshark identifies the encounter as a unique fight for this mission, and Hotfix 1.13.1 has already changed its high-difficulty behaviour by increasing the minimum number of tooth pillars in phase two.
The safest way to approach the Darktide Prophet of Decay is to respect the mechanic windows instead of treating the fight like a stationary damage check. Fatshark’s own balance notes explicitly refer to exhausted phases in the first and last parts of the encounter, and those windows now allow more melee damage on Damnation and above after the health-threshold adjustment.
How to beat the Darktide Prophet of Decay
Enter the arena with ammunition, healing and grenades still available, then focus on staying alive through the active mechanics until the boss becomes exhausted. Those exhausted moments are the clearest verified damage windows from Fatshark’s current notes, so melee-heavy teams should be ready to push damage rather than wasting the opening while scattered around the arena.
On Damnation and higher, expect the fight to demand more mechanic handling than it did at launch. Hotfix 1.13.1 specifically raises the minimum tooth-pillar count in the second phase from two to three, which means older footage can understate how much the team must manage now.

Phase two now has at least three tooth pillars
The biggest current change to the Darktide Prophet of Decay is the phase-two pillar count. On Damnation and above, Fatshark increased the minimum from two to three. If your group has been following a launch guide that tells you to expect only two, update that plan before entering the mission again.
The patch note deliberately describes this as a minimum, so players should avoid treating three as a promise that no additional pillar behaviour can ever occur. The reliable current rule is that high-difficulty teams should be prepared to handle at least three in that phase.
Use exhausted windows for melee damage
Hotfix 1.13.1 also changed health thresholds so more melee damage can be dealt while the Darktide Prophet of Decay is exhausted during the first and last phases. That makes positioning before the exhaustion window important, because a player who is too far away can lose much of the opening simply reaching the target.
Do not interpret that change as a universal melee-only strategy. Darktide still rewards balanced team composition, and surviving the mechanics matters more than forcing damage while the boss is active. The patch simply confirms that exhausted windows are intended opportunities for close-range punishment.
Why launch-day boss guides can be wrong
The Darktide Prophet of Decay encounter changed within days of release. A guide recorded before October 1 may show different tooth-pillar counts or shorter melee opportunities on Damnation and above, even if everything in the video was accurate when it was made.
Check that any advice you follow accounts for Hotfix 1.13.1. That is particularly important for teams moving from lower difficulties into Damnation or Auric, where the pillar change actually applies.
Best preparation before the boss arena
Spillway’s branching routes can drain resources before you reach the Darktide Prophet of Decay, especially if the team chooses a harder path. Keep the squad together, avoid unnecessary ammo waste during routine sections and top up before the final arena whenever the mission gives you the opportunity.
A loadout that can handle hordes, specials and a boss is safer than over-specialising for one damage window. The encounter sits at the end of a full mission, so a build that reaches the arena consistently is more useful than a theoretical boss killer that struggles through the tunnels.
Is the Prophet of Decay exclusive to Spillway?
Yes. Fatshark presents the Darktide Prophet of Decay as a boss fight unique to the new Spillway level. The fight is part of the story reveal at the bottom of the Torrent and is not described as a roaming boss that can replace normal mission encounters elsewhere.
That also makes Spillway the correct mission to replay when practising the fight or working on boss-related Penances. The Terrors in the Depths campaign leads into it, but Consignment Yard and Enclavum Baross do not contain this finale.
Darktide Prophet of Decay is already different from its launch-day version on Damnation and above, so current patch behaviour matters more than day-one footage.
Darktide Prophet of Decay is already different from its launch-day version on Damnation and above. That makes current patch behaviour more reliable than a day-one video that still shows the older pillar count.
