Clash Royale Level 16 is the current maximum card level and uses the simplified cards plus Gold progression introduced after the Elite Wild Card system was removed. Players returning from the old Elite Level era can waste time looking for Elite Wild Cards that are no longer the live upgrade path. The current system uses card copies or matching Wild Cards, Gold and optional Gems for missing resources. For returning players, that one change removes the biggest source of outdated upgrade advice.
Level 16 also connects to several modern progression systems. Max-level duplicate cards convert into Crystals, Collection Level rises whenever a card is upgraded, and Ranked can apply its own level caps even when your collection contains Level 16 cards. That makes the final upgrade most valuable on cards you actively use rather than something every account must rush across the whole collection. Clash Royale Level 16 is therefore both a competitive upgrade choice and a trigger for later duplicate conversion.
How to reach Clash Royale Level 16

Clash Royale Level 16 follows the normal card-upgrade flow rather than the old Elite Wild Card route. Collect the required copies of the card or use Wild Cards of the same rarity, then pay the Gold shown by the live upgrade panel. Gems can cover missing upgrade resources as an optional shortcut.
The progression overhaul deliberately returned the top level to familiar resources. You no longer farm a separate Elite currency just to move a Level 15 card to the maximum.
The important shift with Clash Royale Level 16 is that the final upgrade follows the same resource logic as the rest of card progression. Elite Wild Cards were removed from the live path, so players now combine card copies or matching Wild Cards with Gold, and can use Gems to cover missing upgrade resources. That makes the upgrade screen itself the best account-specific check because partial progress changes what remains to be paid.
Level 16 upgrade costs
The final card-copy requirement depends on rarity, while Gold is also required. Because partial progress, Wild Cards and Gem completion can change what an individual account sees, the live card panel is the final authority before spending.
| Upgrade | Common copies | Rare copies | Epic copies | Legendary copies | Champion copies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 15 to 16 | 5,000 | 1,250 | 200 | 20 | 8 |
The practical cost of Clash Royale Level 16 is not only the final copies. Gold spent on one max-level upgrade cannot be used on several cheaper upgrades elsewhere in the collection.
Cost should be judged in the context of the whole deck, not only the highlighted card. A Clash Royale Level 16 upgrade can improve a key interaction, but the same Gold may also raise several support cards that are lagging behind. If Ranked is your target, compare the active level cap before spending, since levels above the cap do not provide extra battle stats in that capped environment.
The Gem option is best treated as a completion tool rather than a separate mandatory currency. The live upgrade panel calculates what is still missing after your card copies, Wild Cards and Gold are considered, so two accounts can see different Gem requirements for the same final level. Checking that panel before converting or spending resources prevents an old full-cost table from being mistaken for the exact amount your account still owes.
What happened to Elite Wild Cards
Elite Wild Cards were removed from active card progression during the simplification that introduced Level 16. Existing Elite Wild Cards were converted during the transition instead of remaining a permanent top-level requirement.
Any guide telling you to farm Elite Wild Cards for Clash Royale Level 16 is describing the retired system. Current upgrades use cards, Wild Cards, Gold and optional Gems.

Crystals and max-level duplicates
After a card reaches Clash Royale Level 16, excess copies of that card automatically convert into Crystals. The amount depends on rarity, turning future duplicates into cosmetic currency rather than additional upgrade progress.
Crystals do not convert back into cards and do not replace Gold for ordinary upgrades. They belong to the cosmetic reward system.
Should you max every card?
For most players, no. Prioritise cards in a stable main deck, followed by flexible cards that appear in several archetypes. One Level 16 win condition surrounded by underleveled support can be less useful than raising the entire deck toward the relevant competitive cap.
As an account upgrade, Clash Royale Level 16 also adds one Collection Level like any other card upgrade. If your immediate goal is a Collection milestone, several inexpensive low-level upgrades can sometimes be a better Gold investment than one final max-level push.
There is still a long-term reason to finish cards you use frequently. Once Clash Royale Level 16 is reached, future copies of that card become Crystal income instead of ordinary upgrade progress, and the upgrade also adds to Collection Level. Those benefits are useful, but they are secondary to having a coherent deck, so maxing an unused card purely for Crystals is rarely the best first use of scarce Gold.
