Clash Royale Hero Coins: How to Get and Use Them

Clash Royale Hero Coins are the choice-based currency for unlocking Hero forms, replacing the older random Hero Fragment system during the March 2026 rework. That change matters because old guides can still describe a summoning pool, random duplicates or storage behaviour that no longer matches the live game. Hero Coins now let you choose an eligible Hero once you reach the required amount. That control makes the currency easier to plan around than the retired random unlock model.

The system is simple once the current limits are clear, but Arena access, the 200-coin unlock cost, the storage cap and overflow conversion all affect when it makes sense to spend. Seasonal Pass Royale rewards and events can also change how quickly an account reaches another unlock, particularly during a season with a newly released Hero. For anyone approaching the cap, Clash Royale Hero Coins are therefore a spend-or-save decision rather than passive inventory.

Clash Royale Hero Coins become relevant when the Hero system opens at Arena 5. Collect 200 Hero Coins, open the Card Forms section of the Collection and select an eligible Hero to unlock. The result is deliberate rather than random.

Normal storage is capped at 200 Hero Coins. Supercell states that excess coins convert into Gems at one Gem per excess Hero Coin. The special March compensation could overflow storage once, but that temporary migration rule should not be mistaken for normal inventory behaviour.

How to get Clash Royale Hero Coins

The most dependable recurring source of Clash Royale Hero Coins documented by Supercell is the free track of Pass Royale. The March rework allowed up to 75 Hero Coins to be earned in a season from that free track. Certain events can also award the currency, while duplicate Hero rewards can return card copies and Hero Coins instead of granting the same form again.

Seasonal acquisition can sit beside the permanent currency. Some new Heroes appear on an upgraded Pass Royale or another event route, while Supercell can also make them available for 200 Hero Coins. Always use the current season announcement and the live Card Forms screen for a just-released Hero.

The free Pass Royale track makes Clash Royale Hero Coins a resource you can plan over several seasons rather than something tied only to paid offers. Supercell’s March rework set the free-track amount at up to 75 coins per season, so a player starting from zero will normally need more than one source or more than one season to reach 200. Event rewards can shorten that wait, but the live reward screen should decide the exact pace.

When to spend Hero Coins

Because Clash Royale Hero Coins normally cap at exactly the amount needed for an unlock, sitting at 200 has a clear opportunity cost. Future coins can convert to Gems instead of progressing you toward another Hero. Spend once you have a Hero that genuinely improves a deck, unless you are deliberately waiting for a confirmed upcoming form.

The newest Hero is not automatically the best purchase. Card levels, support cards, current balance and your preferred archetype matter more than release order. A direct upgrade to an established deck usually gives faster practical value.

The 200 cap is the main reason Clash Royale Hero Coins should not be left untouched once you have a clear target. If another reward pushes you over the normal limit, excess coins convert to Gems instead of becoming progress toward a second Hero. That conversion is not inherently bad, but it is a poor trade if your real goal is another Hero unlock and an eligible form already fits your deck.

Can Hero Coins unlock new Heroes immediately?

Supercell changed the system so new Heroes can be made available for Hero Coins on release, but season-specific access still matters. If a Hero is tied to a Pass or special route first, use that live rule rather than assuming a previous month applies unchanged.

This makes Clash Royale Hero Coins a permanent framework, not a promise that every seasonal Hero always has the same acquisition timing. The Card Forms screen and the current season announcement remain the final check for a newly released Hero.

What replaced Hero Fragments?

Hero Coins are the renamed and reworked successor to Hero Fragments. The biggest difference is control: reaching 200 lets you choose the Hero. Any guide that still tells players to gather fragments for a random Hero is describing the retired system.

Current Clash Royale Hero Coins guidance should also account for the 200 cap and Gem overflow, two details that directly affect whether saving at the limit is sensible. Those rules matter most when another Pass or event reward is ready to be claimed.

Duplicate Hero rewards are another reason the modern system is easier to manage. Supercell Support says a duplicate Hero can return copies of the underlying card plus 20 Clash Royale Hero Coins, so the reward still contributes to progression without unlocking the same form twice. That is separate from ordinary overflow at the 200 cap, which converts excess coins into Gems.
