Clash Royale Heroes are now a permanent part of deck building, but the system changed enough during 2026 that older unlock advice can send players in the wrong direction. Heroes are special forms of existing cards with active abilities, and they only become the Hero version when placed in a compatible special slot. The important progression questions are therefore not just which Heroes exist, but when the Hero system unlocks, how Hero Coins work and what happens when a new Hero arrives.
October 2026 also brings Hero Electro Wizard into Shocktober, expanding a roster that has grown throughout the year. Supercell also reworked special deck slots so a Hero competes for the Hero Slot or Wild Slot rather than acting like a normal upgrade. Understanding the current unlock rules, current roster and slot restrictions makes it much easier to spend Hero Coins well and avoid obsolete Hero Fragment instructions. That interaction makes slot planning part of Hero progression, not just a battle-time choice.
How Clash Royale Heroes work

Clash Royale Heroes are special forms of existing cards. Unlocking one does not create a separate card that can be placed anywhere in a deck. To activate the Hero form, the underlying card must be placed in the Hero Slot or Wild Slot. In a normal deck slot, the card behaves as its base form.
When building with Clash Royale Heroes, the Hero Slot unlocks at Arena 5 and the Wild Slot unlocks at Arena 10. The Wild Slot can also hold Evolutions and Champions, so using it for a Hero has a real deck-building cost. Hero abilities require Elixir in battle, and most Hero and Champion abilities became single-use per deployment in the August 2026 rework.
Current Clash Royale Heroes roster
The current Clash Royale Heroes roster contains the forms released from December 2025 through Shocktober. Hero Electro Wizard is the newest October addition. The table below lists each live Hero form and the official ability name used by Supercell.
| Hero | Ability |
|---|---|
| Mini P.E.K.K.A | Breakfast Boost |
| Musketeer | Trusty Turret |
| Knight | Triumphant Taunt |
| Giant | Heroic Hurl |
| Wizard | Fiery Flight |
| Ice Golem | Snowstorm |
| Goblins | Banner Brigade |
| Mega Minion | Wounding Warp |
| Barbarian Barrel | Rowdy Reroll |
| Magic Archer | Triple Threat |
| Balloon | Coffin Cadets |
| Dark Prince | Destructive Dismount |
| Bowler | Stone Swish |
| Tombstone | Regal Revival |
| Valkyrie | Wild Whirlwind |
| Berserker | Savage Survival |
| Ice Wizard | Frosty Fella |
| Electro Wizard | Surging Strikes |
Hero Electro Wizard is a launch-route exception during Shocktober because Supercell highlights him in the Upgraded Pass Royale. Other Heroes can use Hero Coins when the live Card Forms screen makes them eligible, so always check a newly released Hero before assuming every seasonal acquisition route is identical.
How to unlock Clash Royale Heroes
Hero Coins are the permanent unlock currency for Clash Royale Heroes. Collect 200 Hero Coins, open the Card Forms area of the Collection and choose an eligible Hero. This choice-based system replaced the old random Hero Fragment setup, so a current guide should never tell you to wait for a random Hero summon.
Normal Hero Coin storage is capped at 200. Excess Hero Coins convert at one Gem per coin once the limit is exceeded. Reaching the cap is therefore a useful moment to make a deliberate unlock rather than letting future progression turn into overflow Gems when you still want another Hero.
A useful way to plan Clash Royale Heroes is to separate the permanent unlock from the seasonal shortcut. Hero Coins remain the account-wide choice currency, while a Pass Royale or event can temporarily give one specific Hero a faster route. If a seasonal reward already covers the Hero you wanted, spending 200 coins on a different eligible form can leave you with two useful unlocks instead of duplicating the same progression goal.

Heroes, Evolutions and Champions are different
Clash Royale Heroes, Evolutions and Champions all compete for special deck slots, but they are different systems. Evolutions change a card after its cycle condition is met. Heroes give an existing card an active ability. Champions are their own rarity with active abilities and can occupy the Hero Slot or Wild Slot.
If a card has both an Evolution and Hero form, the Wild Slot does not grant both effects at once. The deck interface lets you choose the active form. That makes special-slot planning as important as the unlock itself.
Which Hero should you unlock first?
There is no universal best first choice among Clash Royale Heroes. A good unlock improves a deck you can already support with card levels, spells and a clear win condition. Check current balance and live deck evidence before spending 200 Hero Coins, especially if a new Hero is attracting attention mainly because it just released.
As progression choices, Clash Royale Heroes are strongest when the base card already has a role in your collection. Unlocking a form that forces you to rebuild seven other cards is often less useful than upgrading a Hero that fits an established shell.
Before choosing among Clash Royale Heroes, look at the base card first. A Hero form cannot rescue a card that is badly underleveled for the deck you want to play, and the special slot still has to justify its place against Evolutions or Champions. The strongest account decision is usually the Hero that improves a deck you can field now, while leaving enough flexibility to change the Wild Slot when the matchup or balance environment shifts.
