Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree: How to Earn Unlock and Upgrade Tokens

Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree lets you choose which troops, defences and Engine Rooms to unlock during each PvP season. Unlock Tokens open new nodes, while Upgrade Tokens strengthen the equipment you’ve already unlocked. Both come from Warship Chests, which you earn by destroying Engine Rooms in battles.

The Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree changes every season, but its basic rules stay the same. You have to follow connected nodes, and some Engine Rooms are blocked until your Headquarters or Tech Level is high enough. If you’ve got tokens saved but still can’t open the next room, here’s what to check.

How the Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree works

Each node in the Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree unlocks something useful: a troop, defensive building, Engine Room or another battle upgrade. You must unlock the preceding node on the path before you can spend tokens on the next one. Saving up extra tokens won’t let you skip a required unlock.

The available branches change from season to season. You can even unlock units in Warships that your normal Home Base has not unlocked yet, according to Supercell. That makes the Warships loadout a separate set of choices rather than an exact copy of your island’s Armory progression.

Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree: Unlock Tokens vs Upgrade Tokens

The Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree has two distinct token currencies. Unlock Tokens are for gaining access to new items and branches; Upgrade Tokens make existing troops and buildings stronger. Diamonds are also relevant to optional multi-choice swaps, but they are not a substitute for either type of token.

CurrencyUsed for
Unlock TokensOpening a new Tech Tree node after its prerequisites are met.
Upgrade TokensImproving troops and defensive buildings already unlocked.
DiamondsSwitching between options at a multi-choice node.

Upgrading a troop increases its stats and reserves. Upgrading a building improves its stats and increases the number of that building you can have on the ship. This gives you a reason to strengthen useful nodes instead of always rushing for something new. An item must be unlocked before you can upgrade it.

How to get Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree tokens from chests

To earn a Warship Chest, destroy eight Engine Rooms across battles. Supercell also says a new chest becomes available every eight hours. Those two numbers describe different mechanics: one is destruction progress towards a reward, while the other is the timing of chest availability.

The Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree rewards come from those chests, and the eight-room rule does not mean eight wins. You could destroy several Engine Rooms without winning the match, and those destroyed rooms still matter for the chest objective. A victory also has value because winning earns stars towards your seasonal Warships rank.

It helps to plan attacks around reachable Engine Rooms. You are racing the opponent, so the ideal battle is still one where you destroy their rooms before they destroy yours. See our Boom Beach Warships guide for the win conditions and how Warships battles differ from regular base attacks.

Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree: Multi-choice nodes and Diamonds

Some nodes offer several mutually exclusive options. Once you choose one, you cannot select that same already-unlocked option again. Changing your selection to a different option costs Diamonds, and Supercell says the Diamond price rises with repeated swaps until it reaches a cap.

Prototype Defences are only available through multi-choice nodes. That’s a good reason to inspect your options carefully before confirming a branch. The general support guide does not publish a universal Diamond cap, so the current on-screen price should be checked before you spend any premium currency.

Before choosing a multi-choice node, look at what comes next on its branch. A troop or defence is a better purchase when it fits the rest of your ship and helps you reach the next important node. Changing branches repeatedly is an expensive way to experiment.

How Engine Room nodes and Tech Level work

Engine Room nodes can have extra requirements. Supercell says you may need a specified Headquarters level, Tech Level or both. That means having enough Unlock Tokens on its own is not guaranteed to open the next room. Check the conditions displayed on the node first.

You raise Tech Level by unlocking new nodes or upgrading ones you already own. If an Engine Room requires more Tech Level, improving your current Warship equipment can be part of unlocking it. New seasons begin with two Engine Rooms, and you add more through these dedicated nodes.

  • Follow the connected route towards the Engine Room you want.
  • Check its Headquarters and Tech Level requirements.
  • Unlock and upgrade accessible nodes to build your Tech Level.
  • Once all requirements are met, use Unlock Tokens to open the Engine Room node.
  • Review how the extra Engine Room affects both your defensive layout and the opponent’s attack targets.

Best Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree upgrades for beginners

Start with what’s holding your ship back. If you’re struggling to destroy Engine Rooms, invest in troops you can actually use. If your next Engine Room is blocked by Tech Level, upgrades to existing nodes will help raise it. Use this quick checklist before spending:

  • Start with a workable attack. Unlock troops that can reach the opposing Engine Rooms.
  • Do not neglect defence. Upgrading buildings can increase the number available for placement.
  • Read the next requirements. A distant Engine Room might be blocked by Tech Level or Headquarters, not just tokens.
  • Avoid unnecessary Diamond swaps. Inspect multi-choice alternatives before confirming them.
  • Watch your chest progress. Engine Rooms destroyed across battles count, even if you lose the match.

If you haven’t entered the mode yet, our Warships unlock guide explains the Headquarters level 10 requirement and Boom Pass alternative. The game also has a native Windows version, covered in our Boom Beach PC guide, with progress shared through Supercell ID.

Does the Boom Beach Warships Tech Tree reset each season?

Yes. The seasonal Tech Tree layout changes and players start each Warships season with two Engine Rooms. Your normal Home Base upgrades are separate. If you’re following somebody’s upgrade route, check that it’s for the current season before spending your tokens.
