Aggron Pokémon GO is a Steel and Rock-type Pokémon with a powerful Mega Evolution, an available shiny form and several possible Rock and Steel-type movesets. Regular Aggron is not one of the strongest Pokémon in every part of the game, but Mega Aggron is considerably more useful and can provide valuable support during group raids.

Aggron has a maximum CP of 3,391 at Level 50. Its base stats in Pokémon GO are 198 Attack, 257 Defense and 172 Stamina. Aggron’s high Defense is its most impressive stat, but its lower Attack prevents the regular form from competing with the strongest raid attackers.

Can Aggron be shiny in Pokémon GO?

Yes, shiny Aggron is available in Pokémon GO.

Shiny Aggron replaces much of its usual grey colouring with a pale green shade. Its eyes also become red, making shiny Aggron easy to distinguish from the standard version.

Trainers can obtain shiny Aggron by evolving a shiny Aron or shiny Lairon. Aggron may also be encountered directly after certain raid battles when it is included in the active raid rotation.

A shiny encounter is determined when the encounter begins. Raid speed, Premier Ball numbers, berries and throw quality do not affect whether Aggron will be shiny.

Shiny Aggron can be Mega Evolved into shiny Mega Aggron once the trainer has collected enough Aggron Mega Energy. Mega Evolution does not remove its shiny status.

What is the best Aggron Pokémon GO moveset?

The best Aggron Pokémon GO moveset for general raid use is:

Fast Attack: Smack Down
Charged Attack: Meteor Beam

Smack Down and Meteor Beam give Aggron a complete Rock-type moveset with the Same-Type Attack Bonus. This is generally Aggron’s most useful offensive combination, particularly when it is being used against a Pokémon weak to Rock-type damage.

Meteor Beam is also Aggron’s strongest overall Charged Attack in many raid situations. Aggron can additionally use Heavy Slam when a Steel-type Charged Attack is required.

Best Aggron moveset for Steel-type damage

For Steel-type damage, the best Aggron Pokémon GO moveset is:

Fast Attack: Iron Tail
Charged Attack: Heavy Slam

This provides Aggron with a complete Steel-type moveset. However, regular Aggron is generally outperformed by stronger Steel-type Pokémon such as Metagross, Shadow Metagross and other high-level attackers.

The Steel moveset becomes more interesting when Aggron is Mega Evolved. Mega Aggron is a pure Steel-type Pokémon and receives the Same-Type Attack Bonus from both Iron Tail and Heavy Slam.

Best Aggron moveset for PvP

Aggron can use several different moves in Trainer Battles, but a practical PvP moveset is:

Fast Attack: Dragon Tail
Charged Attacks: Rock Tomb and Thunder

Dragon Tail deals consistent damage and provides coverage against Dragon-type opponents. Rock Tomb can reduce an opponent’s Attack, while Thunder gives Aggron coverage against Water and Flying-type Pokémon.

Smack Down can also be used when Rock-type Fast Attack pressure is more important. However, Aggron is not currently one of the leading options in the open Great, Ultra or Master League formats.

Is Aggron good in Pokémon GO?

Aggron Pokémon GO
Aggron Pokémon GO Image Pokemon GO

Regular Aggron has some useful qualities, but it is not an essential Pokémon GO investment for most trainers.

Aggron has excellent Defense, a high maximum CP and access to complete Rock and Steel-type movesets. However, its Attack stat is considerably lower than the stats offered by the strongest raid attackers.

The biggest reasons to keep and invest in Aggron are:

  • Mega Aggron is a useful Steel-type Mega Evolution
  • Shadow Aggron can provide respectable Rock-type damage
  • Aggron has strong defensive stats
  • Shiny Aggron has a distinctive appearance
  • Aron Candy is usually easier to collect than Candy for many rare attackers
  • Mega Aggron can boost other Steel-type attackers in a raid group

A strong Aggron is worth keeping, especially if it has perfect or near-perfect IVs. However, trainers should usually prioritise Mega Evolution rather than spending heavily on several regular Aggron.

Is Aggron good for raids?

Aggron can be used in raids, but regular Aggron is rarely the strongest available choice.

With Smack Down and Meteor Beam, Aggron can deal Rock-type damage against Fire, Flying, Bug and Ice-type raid bosses. Its high Defense also helps it remain in battle for a reasonable amount of time.

The problem is that raid performance rewards damage dealt quickly. Pokémon such as Rampardos, Rhyperior, Tyranitar and several powerful Mega or Shadow Pokémon can generally deal damage faster.

Aggron becomes much more valuable when it is Mega Evolved. Mega Aggron can provide Steel-type damage while boosting the Steel-type attacks of other trainers’ Pokémon during a group raid.

Is Shadow Aggron good in Pokémon GO?

Shadow Aggron is more effective offensively than regular Aggron because Shadow Pokémon receive an Attack boost at the cost of reduced Defense.

With Smack Down and Meteor Beam, Shadow Aggron can function as a useful Rock-type attacker. Its overall performance is still affected by competition from stronger Rock-type Pokémon, but it is much more relevant as an attacker than the regular form. Current rankings place Shadow Aggron among the stronger available Rock-type options rather than among the very best overall raid attackers.

Trainers should normally remove Frustration during a Team GO Rocket event before trying to build the correct Shadow Aggron moveset.

Purifying Shadow Aggron is not automatically an improvement. Purification removes the Shadow Attack bonus, although it can increase the Pokémon’s IVs and reduce its Stardust and Candy costs.

Is Aggron good in the GO Battle League?

Aggron can be used in the GO Battle League, but it is usually a specialist choice rather than a dominant open-league Pokémon.

Its Steel typing gives it many resistances, while Rock-type attacks allow it to pressure Flying, Fire, Bug and Ice-type opponents. However, the combination of Steel and Rock also gives regular Aggron dangerous double weaknesses to Fighting and Ground-type attacks.

Those weaknesses are especially problematic because Fighting and Ground moves are common across multiple PvP formats.

Aggron can perform better in limited cups where its strongest counters are restricted. Before investing significant Stardust, trainers should check whether the current cup rules give Aggron a genuine role.

Aggron Pokémon GO weaknesses

Aggron is a Steel and Rock-type Pokémon. It has the following weaknesses:

  • Fighting-type attacks
  • Ground-type attacks
  • Water-type attacks

Aggron has a double weakness to Fighting and Ground-type attacks. These types deal substantially more damage than a standard super-effective attack.

Water-type attacks also deal super-effective damage, but Aggron is not doubly weak to Water.

Aggron Pokémon GO resistances

Aggron resists a large selection of attack types because of its Steel and Rock typing.

It resists:

  • Bug
  • Dragon
  • Fairy
  • Flying
  • Ice
  • Normal
  • Poison
  • Psychic
  • Rock

Aggron’s many resistances and high Defense can make it look extremely durable. However, its double Fighting and Ground weaknesses can cause it to be defeated quickly in the wrong matchup.

Best counters for Aggron raids

The best counters for an Aggron raid are powerful Fighting and Ground-type Pokémon. These attacks exploit Aggron’s double weaknesses and deal much more damage than Water-type attacks.

Strong Aggron counters can include:

PokémonRecommended moves
Primal GroudonMud Shot and Precipice Blades
Mega LucarioForce Palm or Counter and Aura Sphere
Mega GarchompMud Shot and Earth Power
Shadow GroudonMud Shot and Precipice Blades
TerrakionDouble Kick and Sacred Sword
LucarioForce Palm or Counter and Aura Sphere
Shadow ExcadrillMud-Slap and Scorching Sands
Shadow MachampCounter and Dynamic Punch
ConkeldurrCounter and Dynamic Punch
ExcadrillMud-Slap and Scorching Sands

The exact best team will depend on Pokémon levels, available moves, weather conditions and Aggron’s raid moveset.

Aggron can usually be defeated without a large group when trainers use properly levelled Fighting or Ground-type counters. It should not be attacked using automatically selected teams containing weak or poorly matched Pokémon.

Aggron raid CP and perfect IV CP

When Aggron is available as a standard raid boss, a perfect 100% IV encounter has the following CP:

EncounterPerfect IV CP
Level 20, no weather boost1,714 CP
Level 25, weather boosted2,143 CP

Aggron can be weather boosted by Snow or Partly Cloudy weather because of its Steel and Rock typing.

A weather-boosted Aggron is caught at Level 25 rather than Level 20, reducing the amount of Stardust and Candy needed to power it up.

How to get Aggron in Pokémon GO

The most reliable way to get Aggron in Pokémon GO is to evolve Aron into Lairon and then evolve Lairon into Aggron.

The full evolution process requires:

  • 25 Aron Candy to evolve Aron into Lairon
  • 100 Aron Candy to evolve Lairon into Aggron
  • 125 Aron Candy in total

Aggron can also occasionally appear as a direct encounter through raids, research, events or other limited features.

Aron may appear in the wild during suitable events and seasons. Catching Aron with a Pinap Berry can help trainers collect the Candy needed for both evolutions.

Does Aggron evolve in Pokémon GO?

Aggron is the final standard evolution in its family and does not evolve into another permanent Pokémon.

The complete family is:

Aron → Lairon → Aggron

Aggron can temporarily Mega Evolve into Mega Aggron using Aggron Mega Energy. Mega Evolution is not a permanent evolution and Aggron returns to its standard form after the Mega Evolution period ends.

How to get Mega Aggron in Pokémon GO

To get Mega Aggron, trainers must collect Aggron Mega Energy and use it to Mega Evolve an eligible Aggron.

Aggron Mega Energy is primarily earned by defeating Mega Aggron in Mega Raids when it is available. It may also be awarded through selected research tasks, event rewards or walking with an eligible buddy after Mega Aggron has been registered.

The first Mega Evolution has the highest Mega Energy cost. Future Mega Evolutions of the same Aggron cost less energy after the rest period has ended, and they can eventually become free once the cooldown is complete.

What type is Mega Aggron in Pokémon GO?

Mega Aggron is a pure Steel-type Pokémon.

This is a significant change from regular Aggron, which is both Steel and Rock-type. Losing the Rock typing removes Mega Aggron’s double weaknesses to Fighting and Ground.

Mega Aggron is weak to:

  • Fighting
  • Fire
  • Ground

None of these is a double weakness.

The change also means Mega Aggron no longer receives the Same-Type Attack Bonus from Rock-type moves such as Smack Down and Meteor Beam. Its most natural Mega Aggron moveset is therefore Iron Tail and Heavy Slam.

What is the best Mega Aggron moveset?

The best Mega Aggron moveset for Steel-type raid damage is:

Fast Attack: Iron Tail
Charged Attack: Heavy Slam

Mega Aggron receives the Same-Type Attack Bonus from both moves. It can provide Steel-type damage against Fairy, Ice and Rock-type raid bosses while also boosting other Steel-type attackers used by the raid group.

Mega Aggron can still use Smack Down and Meteor Beam, but it does not receive the Rock-type Same-Type Attack Bonus after Mega Evolving because Mega Aggron is no longer a Rock-type Pokémon.

Is Mega Aggron good in Pokémon GO?

Mega Aggron is good in Pokémon GO, particularly as a durable Steel-type Mega Evolution.

Its enormous Defense allows it to remain active for longer, extending the period during which other players receive a Mega damage boost. This can be useful in larger raid groups where the team boost may contribute more than Mega Aggron’s individual damage.

Mega Aggron is not always the strongest Steel-type attacker based purely on damage per second. However, it remains a useful option when trainers need a Steel-type Mega, want to boost Steel Candy rewards or require a durable Pokémon that can stay on the field. Current data places Mega Aggron among the stronger Steel-type attackers, although its overall performance depends heavily on the matchup.

Mega Aggron Pokémon GO raid weaknesses

Mega Aggron is weak to Fighting, Fire and Ground-type attacks.

Unlike regular Aggron, Mega Aggron does not have a double weakness. This makes a Mega Aggron raid more demanding than a standard Aggron raid.

The best Mega Aggron counters are normally powerful Fighting, Fire and Ground-type Pokémon, including:

  • Primal Groudon
  • Mega Lucario
  • Mega Garchomp
  • Mega Blaziken
  • Shadow Groudon
  • Reshiram
  • Terrakion
  • Lucario
  • Shadow Excadrill
  • Shadow Machamp

Weather, friendship bonuses, party power and the strength of each trainer’s team will affect how many players are required.

Mega Aggron raid CP and perfect IV CP

After defeating Mega Aggron, trainers receive an encounter with regular Aggron rather than keeping the Pokémon in its Mega-Evolved form.

A perfect Aggron from a Mega Aggron raid will have:

EncounterPerfect IV CP
Level 20, no weather boost2,378 CP
Level 25, Snow weather boost2,973 CP

The complete encounter range is 2,284 to 2,378 CP without a weather boost and 2,856 to 2,973 CP with a Snow weather boost.

Is Mega Aggron worth raiding?

Mega Aggron is worth raiding when trainers do not already have enough Aggron Mega Energy or have not yet registered Mega Aggron in the Mega Pokédex.

It can also be worth raiding for:

  • A chance to encounter shiny Aggron
  • High-IV Aggron encounters
  • Additional Aron Candy
  • Additional Candy XL
  • A durable Steel-type Mega Evolution
  • Steel-type raid support
  • Steel-type Candy and Candy XL bonuses

Once a trainer has unlocked Mega Aggron and raised its Mega Level, repeatedly raiding it becomes less essential. However, additional Mega Energy can still be useful for avoiding cooldown periods.

Should you power up Aggron in Pokémon GO?

A strong Aggron is worth powering up when it will be used as Mega Aggron, Shadow Aggron or as a budget Rock-type attacker.

The best Aggron Pokémon GO investment candidates include:

  • A perfect or near-perfect Aggron
  • A shiny Aggron with strong IVs
  • An Aggron selected for Mega Evolution
  • A high-Attack Shadow Aggron
  • An Aggron with Smack Down and Meteor Beam
  • An Aggron with Iron Tail and Heavy Slam for Mega Evolution

Trainers with limited Stardust should prioritise stronger specialist attackers before powering up several regular Aggron. One high-quality Aggron for Mega Evolution is generally more useful than building an entire team of standard Aggron.
