Marathon Symbiosis December 8 is Bungie’s next major update, planned for Tuesday 8 December 2026. Its headline additions are Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, a bigger and more dangerous Perimeter, the Bishop Runner shell, a social space and firing range, experimental Team Deathmatch and improved onboarding.
Symbiosis is the substantial update that Bungie originally intended to deliver in September. October’s Nightfall Refresh came first to reset progression and improve the live game, while the studio continued building the new ways to play planned for December.
Marathon Symbiosis December 8 release and features

| Feature | Officially announced |

| PvE | First permanent PvE experience |

| Runner | Bishop, focused on speed and melee |
| Social | Social space and firing range |
| PvP | Experimental Team Deathmatch |
| New players | Onboarding improvements |
Bungie confirmed the 8 December release in September and set out more detail in its October roadmap. Rather than another set of short-lived weekend activities, Symbiosis brings lasting changes to how Runners explore Tau Ceti IV and prepare for its toughest encounters.
The announced package covers PvE, an expanded existing zone, a new shell and places to practise. Bungie has not published an exact UK launch hour, so the confirmed date is 8 December rather than an invented countdown time.
Marathon Symbiosis December 8 permanent PvE mode
The biggest addition is permanent PvE: a way to explore, pursue loot and tackle escalating challenges without other Runners hunting you. Bungie wants a lower-pressure alternative to its existing PvPvE extraction loop, with room to learn the world and prepare for harder fights.
This is different from Vault Breaker, the temporary sponsored Cryo Archive activity running from 20 October to 10 November. Bungie is using lessons from that experiment to shape permanent PvE. The finished December mode will determine its specific rewards and requirements.
Marathon Symbiosis December 8 Perimeter and Tick Queen
Perimeter is getting more than a visual polish. A spreading fungal ecosystem is reshaping the area and opening routes through previously familiar places. Bungie wants it to feel deeper and more distinct from the other zones.
The developer also promises new points of interest and tougher challenges, including a pinnacle encounter with the Tick Queen, described as Marathon’s largest combatant yet. That is a concrete reason to revisit Perimeter, rather than simply expecting the same map with different scenery.
Marathon Symbiosis December 8 Bishop Runner shell
Bishop is the new Runner shell, designed around speed, surprise and bursts of melee damage. Bungie calls Bishop a high-performance robot samurai, built to strike quickly and give players a more aggressive close-range option.
The official reveal establishes Bishop’s combat identity, but it does not yet provide the complete ability list needed for a reliable build or cooldown guide. Those details belong to the finished shell when players can test it.
The CyAc social space and firing range
Symbiosis introduces a CyAc-sponsored social space with a built-in firing range. Bungie says players will be able to meet, prepare, test weapons and abilities, and get comfortable with their shell away from the pressure of an extraction match.
That gives the social area a purpose beyond standing around between runs. Our existing Marathon Social Space guide covers the announcement; a step-by-step firing range guide can follow when the actual controls are available.
Marathon Symbiosis December 8 Team Deathmatch
An experimental Team Deathmatch mode is planned too, offering more direct PvP without committing to a full extraction run. Bungie describes it as an experiment, so it should not be presented as a permanent ranked ladder.
New-player onboarding is also being improved. Bungie’s aim is to help first-time Runners understand the basics and find their feet before tackling higher-stakes content. These changes are the start of a larger plan for Marathon’s learning curve.
Why Symbiosis moved from September
The content was originally targeted for 22 September. Bungie moved that larger release to 8 December, then used 6 October’s Nightfall Refresh to reset progression, update rewards and tune the live game while Symbiosis continued in development.
That is why Sponsored Queues and Vault Breaker remain relevant through the autumn. They provide activities between larger updates, but they don’t include Bishop, the permanent PvE mode or the new firing range.
Marathon Symbiosis December 8 versus current events
Right now, Sponsored Queues rotate between Perimeter, Marsh and Night Marsh on weekend windows, using supplied kits for extraction matches. The Sponsored Perimeter weekend beginning 29 October is part of that rotation, not an early release of the December Perimeter overhaul.
Vault Breaker is the limited PvE event with Vault Data and Armory rewards. Update 1.1.9.6 fixes contract reputation and a Night Marsh dropship spawn. Neither unlocks the planned Symbiosis content.
What Bungie has planned for March
March is the next milestone on Bungie’s roadmap. Its longer-term plans include connecting PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, deeper shell progression, more narrative quests, new enemies and an entirely new zone. Those are March plans, not additions announced for 8 December.
For players waiting for permanent PvE, Bishop, the Tick Queen encounter or a place to test weapons, Marathon Symbiosis December 8 is the date to watch. The October events are playable now; these bigger additions are scheduled for the December update.
