OSRS Archive Guardian is the mandatory opening boss in the Fractured Archive. It starts airborne behind a shield, falls to the ground once that shield is gone, and attacks with mushrooms, ground tendrils and a targeted laser. Learning this encounter cleanly saves food and Prayer for the four fights still ahead.
The most common mistake is bringing only a short-range melee weapon or standing still while the arena fills with hazards. Your group needs attacks that can reach the flying boss, space to dodge spores, and a plan for sharing the beam towards the end. The fight is demanding, but its main transitions are easy to recognise once everyone knows what they are watching.
How to enter the OSRS Archive Guardian fight
Complete While Guthix Sleeps and enter the Archive near the Guthixian Temple. The eastern Grouping Board in the lobby lets players organise a team. Archive Guardian is always the first encounter: you cannot skip it by choosing a side door, and the first branch between Ezekiel and Bork appears only after its defeat. Jagex recommends groups of three to five, while solos receive two-player scaling.
You cannot bank during the raid, so take a Ranged or Magic switch before starting OSRS Archive Guardian. A halberd also reaches the flying boss. Once it drops to the floor, regular melee becomes available. Teams entering with full inventories of melee equipment but no way to damage the airborne shield will have a difficult time.

OSRS Archive Guardian airborne shield mechanics
The Guardian levitates at the start, requiring attacks with enough reach. Damage its shield until it collapses, then switch to melee if your gear makes that worthwhile. There are other objects around the arena that interact with the Guardian’s shield, and groups benefit from agreeing who activates them rather than scattering around the room.
The OSRS Archive Guardian airborne section is also where you should establish your party’s positioning. Keep a few open tiles between yourself and mushroom growths, and don’t crowd into one corner to maximise damage. Different attacks are effective in the air and on the ground, so a mixed combat setup serves you better than a single weapon all the way through.
Mushroom spores and slowing hazards
Mushrooms appear around the arena and release dangerous spores. Their effects can damage or hinder movement, making the next attack more difficult to avoid. Look at the tiles you can move to before the mushrooms spread. A player who gets stuck near the edge with hazardous growth on either side can have trouble escaping the Guardian’s next area attack.
The safer OSRS Archive Guardian approach is to move only as far as needed while keeping sight of the boss. Sprinting across the room every time spores appear is not always safer, especially if you cross another player’s targeted ground hazard. Have one teammate call large changes in the arena so the rest can focus on their own position.
OSRS Archive Guardian ground tendrils and melee phase
When the Guardian’s shield falls, it drops into the arena and becomes reachable with standard melee attacks. Ground tendrils still appear and punish anyone who stays on their tiles. Watch their placement and step away instead of finishing a long attack sequence inside the danger area. If your party uses melee heavily, spread around the boss enough to leave each player an escape route.
The OSRS Archive Guardian melee phase is where many groups make up damage after the shield. Avoid turning that into a competition to stand closest to the boss at all times. Your food lasts longer when you dodge the obvious hazards, even if that means losing one attack while repositioning.
How to survive the OSRS Archive Guardian beam
Later the Guardian targets an individual player with a powerful beam. Its visual cue singles out the chosen player, allowing the party to coordinate. Teammates can stand along the same beam line to share the impact, reducing the chance of one player taking the full hit. The target should call their position early and let the group align rather than fleeing to a distant corner.
For OSRS Archive Guardian, treat that beam as a team mechanic, not a personal dodge test. Players who stay focused solely on their damage rotation may miss the chance to help the target. The western Strategy Board in the lobby allows spectating consenting groups, so watching this sequence before your first attempt can be useful.

Gear and October 21 changes for OSRS Archive Guardian
A strong Ranged weapon is useful against the airborne shield, while Crush melee gear can perform well on the ground. Magic is another way to keep attacking from a distance. Jagex’s October 21 hotfix capped the boss’s Defence reduction at 60% of the starting Defence level. Launch-day videos where several bosses were reduced to zero can make those strategies look more powerful than they are now.
After the OSRS Archive Guardian kill, you can choose Ezekiel or Bork and the Smorks. Save enough food and Prayer for the next encounter and the final boss Ocellus.
