OSRS Hardcore Worlds: How to Join, Death Rules and Rewards

OSRS Hardcore Worlds launch November 4, 2026, as permanent servers with stricter death rules and a separate player-run economy. Fresh characters start through Tutorial Island, where Death’s Delegate opens the route to Death’s Office. You must accept Death’s challenge before entering these worlds. XP and drop rates remain normal, trading and the Grand Exchange are allowed, and dying forces you to Reset or Transfer.

A death in the Inferno, Fight Caves, Chambers of Xeric or several usually safe minigames can end your attempt. You can start over as often as you like, but each reset erases your character. Transferring keeps your surviving progress at the cost of leaving these worlds permanently.

How to join OSRS Hardcore Worlds

Create a fresh OSRS character and play through Tutorial Island. Near the Magic Instructor’s house and Paul the Ironman Tutor, find Death’s Delegate. Talk to the Delegate to enter Death’s Office, then speak directly to Death and accept the challenge. Once you’ve accepted the challenge, select a Hardcore World and begin outside Lumbridge Castle when the servers open on November 4. The redesigned world-switcher filters, including a Hardcore game-mode filter, are planned for an update toward the end of November, so they may not be available on launch day.

You cannot carry an existing main-game character, its skills or its bank into OSRS Hardcore Worlds. That is separate from the Jagex Account migration process. If you’re dealing with an account upgrade, our upgrade instructions cover access without changing the new-character requirement.

In OSRS Hardcore Worlds, you can trade directly with other players and use the Grand Exchange. The economy is separate from the main game, so ordinary main-game item offers won’t populate its market. Gear and coins lost through deaths also leave circulation, which could change prices as players progress.

Which activities are unsafe in OSRS Hardcore Worlds?

Jagex names Barbarian Assault, Camelot Training Room, Chambers of Xeric, the Lunar Diplomacy Dream World, Fishing Trawler, Inferno, Magic Training Arena, Nightmare Zone, Pest Control, Random Events, Rogues’ Den, TzHaar Fight Cave and the Player-owned House as unsafe despite their usual Hardcore Ironman protections. If you die there, expect to lose the Hardcore run.

Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars and TzHaar Fight Pit are safe. There are narrow exceptions for the fourth phase of Koschei’s duel in The Fremennik Trials and for particular diary resurrection rewards in Fight Caves and Zulrah. Those do not mean all Fight Caves or Zulrah deaths are safe. Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing are disabled at initial release.

What happens when you die in OSRS Hardcore Worlds?

Normal item protection is calculated before the character decision. Most deaths protect three carried items, or four with Protect Item active; Wilderness PvP follows its own normal rules. Gear that would go to a gravestone is permanently destroyed. Death then presents two choices at his office.

Reset completely wipes the Hardcore character, including levels, quests, bank contents and the protected items from that death. You can start again as many times as you like. Transfer removes the character from Hardcore Worlds with no return, but preserves the protected gear and belongings in the bank or other storage after the death-loss stage. Check carefully before choosing.

How the OSRS Hardcore Worlds Escape Crystal works

Every new character starts with an Escape Crystal. This consumable item can teleport you out of specified dangerous areas and has a configurable auto-teleport when you take damage after inactivity, useful for some disconnects. The current game item supports an inactivity setting of 2–300 seconds, though it isn’t a universal protection against death.

Jagex proposed cutting its replacement cost from 75,000 to 10,000 coins, selling it through Death and clearing poison or other status effects on use. Those were proposals in the October 22 announcement, not confirmed features to rely on at launch. Check your Configure setting before risking a valuable run.

OSRS Hardcore Worlds rewards and world-first achievements

Jagex plans global broadcasts for major deaths and world firsts. Examples include the first completion of The Fractured Archive, TzHaar Fight Caves, Grandmaster Combat Achievements and the mode’s first death. The complete achievement list and any further rewards have not been announced.

Before your first difficult encounter, check three things: whether death counts against Hardcore status, whether your Escape Crystal works in that activity, and what your Items Kept on Death screen shows. For a longer-term raid goal, our Fractured Archive boss route and gear guide cover the mechanics and supplies, but their normal-game advice doesn’t turn a raid death into a safe one.
