OSRS Rondache is a tradeable shield from the Fractured Archive raid, introduced on October 20, 2026. It reduces incoming damage with flat armour and Magic resistance, storing the damage it prevents as charges for its instant Shield Bash attack. Unlike a pure defensive shield, it can turn repeated small hits into a counterattack without replacing your main-hand weapon.
That trade-off depends on how frequently an enemy actually hits you. The shield offers useful protection against chip damage, but an Avernic Defender can still be the better offensive choice in situations where you rarely take hits. Here’s how the Rondache works, how to obtain one and what its charging rules mean in ordinary combat.
OSRS Rondache requirements and acquisition
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Source | Fractured Archive reward chest |
| Equipment requirement | 80 Defence |
| Tradeable | Yes |
| Flat armour | +2 |
| Magic resistance | +2 |
| Maximum Shield Bash charges | 20 |
| Attack style for Shield Bash accuracy | Crush |
| Exact unique drop rate | Not confirmed in Jagex’s launch notes |
To obtain the OSRS Rondache through gameplay, complete the Fractured Archive and receive it as a reward from its chest. The raid requires the While Guthix Sleeps quest, and its five-boss route includes choices between three pairs of encounters. The shield is also tradeable, so players who do not want to farm it directly can acquire one through player trading or the Grand Exchange when listings are available.
Jagex has not published a complete verified unique drop-rate table, so no particular boss choice or invented ‘1 in X’ estimate belongs in a reliable farming guide. The raid entrance and routes article explains how to reach the chest in a normal clear.

OSRS Rondache charges: how they build
The OSRS Rondache mitigates two damage from incoming Melee, Ranged and Magic attacks, excluding typeless damage. Each point it prevents contributes to the Shield Bash charge pool, up to twenty charges. This is automatic while the item is being used in combat, not a resource you mine or add to the item yourself.
For example, if repeated hits allow the shield to prevent a total of twenty damage, it can reach its maximum stored charge. A special meter appears beneath the usual special-attack energy orb to show the shield’s accumulated power. The design allows the shield to be worn with a main-hand weapon that already has its own special attack.
That relationship is why the OSRS Rondache is particularly interesting against frequent small hits. The reduction adds up across a longer encounter, while the charge gives you another way to retaliate. Against enemies that barely touch you, the special will build more slowly, and a conventional offensive off-hand might provide more value.
OSRS Rondache Shield Bash: what does it do?
Shield Bash spends the stored charges on a rapid attack. Jagex describes it as instant, similar in feel to the Granite Maul’s special. The attack’s damage is tied to how much energy the shield has stored, and its accuracy is calculated using Crush accuracy from charges, armour and jewellery rather than the accuracy of your currently held weapon.
In the published reward design, each charge adds six Crush accuracy and the hit deals the charge count plus that count as a percentage. The exact hit still depends on the live combat calculation and target, so a simple charge calculation isn’t a guaranteed damage result. Jagex described a brief delay before the shield starts storing new charges after a Bash, although its flat protection remains active.
Waiting to accumulate charges makes Shield Bash stronger, but you can use a partial charge if the fight is about to end. A partially charged Bash can still have a purpose as a finisher, but saving the meter until full improves the stated damage calculation. If the boss will die before your next charge cycle, use the stored Bash instead of letting it go unused.
Is OSRS Rondache better than an Avernic Defender?
The OSRS Rondache is more defensive than the Avernic Defender. It offers higher defensive bonuses, flat damage mitigation and the additional Shield Bash, while the Defender carries accuracy bonuses that help normal weapon attacks. Jagex’s rewards discussion explicitly presented them as different choices: the Defender is generally stronger if offence is all you care about, while the Rondache shines when damage mitigation has value.
That means there is no clean ‘replace every Defender’ answer. A shield that stores charges from mitigated hits offers more in encounters where you constantly suffer small amounts of unavoidable damage. Against a boss you already kill without being hit much, the Defender’s accuracy advantage is hard to ignore. The correct choice depends on damage frequency and the combat style you use.

Where can the shield be useful?
Jagex has discussed the OSRS Rondache as a way to soften chip damage at raids and other demanding combat encounters. The Great Olm, Inferno and Araxxor were among the examples raised during development, but usefulness depends on your setup and the specific attacks being taken. The release two days ago is too recent to present exact best-in-slot DPS rankings as settled.
Within the Fractured Archive, it can make sense for a player learning how to survive repeated hits, but the raid also rewards Crush damage, Ranged switches and area control. Don’t sacrifice a required spell or ranged weapon just to carry another shield. Our complete Fractured Archive rewards guide covers the new weapons alongside the shield.
Does the Shield Bash use special energy?
The shield has its own charge display below your regular special-attack energy. That separate indicator is the important feature for players using weapons with special attacks: you can judge when the shield has stored enough power while still keeping track of your main weapon’s normal special energy. The current live design also grants combat experience according to your selected attack style when the Bash lands.
If you’re testing the OSRS Rondache immediately after release, make sure you’re reading its own charge meter and not confusing it with a weapon special. Jagex has already made other raid-related hotfixes this week, so use the official launch notes below for current patch information rather than older proposal images.
The OSRS Rondache is most useful when it has time to absorb repeated small hits and build its Shield Bash charge. On a boss that rarely connects or where every point of offensive accuracy counts, compare it against your defender before switching. Watch the shield’s own charge meter rather than timing the bash by your weapon’s normal special energy.
