The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module is a new Trigger Module arriving in the October 15, 2026 Update 1.4.5. Nexon says it uses a sequence of Ground Damage-over-Time and Concealment-type skills, then provides Skill 4 cooldown reduction and increased Toxic skill power. It’s a potentially useful choice for a Toxic skill build rather than a general gun-damage module.
The confirmed effects are already useful for deciding which character setup to test, especially if you use Freyna’s Toxic abilities or Neurotoxin Synthesis. The final 1.4.5 patch notes now identify the farming sources and activation sequence. First apply Ground DoT to gain Gap, then use a Concealment skill while Gap is active to trigger Ambush Setup.
The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module: what activates it?

Nexon identifies two required skill categories in order: Ground DoT then Concealment. Ground DoT means an effect that deals damage over time on the ground, rather than an ordinary firearm hit. Concealment is a skill category rather than the name of a weapon. The effect specifically requires Ground DoT followed by Concealment while Gap is active. Normal weapon damage doesn’t satisfy that sequence.
For the The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module, check the category of the skills in your Descendant setup. Use a Ground DoT ability first to gain Gap, then a Concealment ability during Gap to trigger Ambush Setup, and inspect the active effect in the live 1.4.5 interface. The preview does not clarify whether triggering it from both categories at once improves the bonus, so there’s no basis for recommending a double-trigger rotation yet.
The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module: Toxic skill power bonus
One part of the module increases Toxic skill power. That targets the damage output of qualifying Toxic abilities, not a blanket increase to all firearms or all elemental damage. Builds centred on Toxic skills are the clearest place to start testing it.
The important distinction is between skills that deal Toxic damage and other sources of damage in your loadout. A firearm doing ordinary damage won’t automatically gain the same benefit. Until Nexon publishes the full percentages, compare your actual Toxic skill damage before and after triggering the The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module effect in the same kind of encounter.
The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module: Skill 4 cooldown reduction
The other confirmed bonus reduces Skill 4 cooldown. Skill 4 is the Descendant’s fourth active ability, so a shorter cooldown can help a build that depends on using that ability more often. Nexon’s preview does not state a universal reduction in seconds or a percentage for this particular Trigger Module.
To judge the value of The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module, look at your Skill 4 cooldown before triggering it, use a qualifying ability and check the resulting timing in the patched game. A lower cooldown is most useful if your build uses Skill 4 often enough to benefit from the extra opportunities to cast it.
Prepping in the Dark and Freyna’s Neurotoxin Synthesis

Nexon specifically calls out Neurotoxin Synthesis as a strong pairing for the module. That is the developer’s direct build recommendation and makes Freyna a sensible starting point for testing the Toxic power bonus and the Skill 4 cooldown effect.
The The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module shouldn’t be confused with Freyna’s October rebalance itself. The same patch changes Freyna’s other skills and modules, but Prepping in the Dark is a new Trigger Module with its own activation categories and effects. See the Freyna October 2026 rework guide for the separate changes.
How to use the The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module in a build
- Update The First Descendant to version 1.4.5 once maintenance finishes.
- Open your equipped Descendant’s module screen and read the new Trigger Module’s compatibility conditions.
- Use a build with a qualifying Ground DoT or Concealment skill.
- Check the Toxic skill power and Skill 4 cooldown effects shown after activation.
- If you’re using Freyna, compare the results with your existing Neurotoxin Synthesis setup.
- Keep the same skill loadout while comparing effects so a different module or weapon isn’t mistaken for the new bonus.
This procedure helps determine whether your current skills meet the module’s activation rule. It doesn’t assume that every Toxic skill is a Ground DoT, or that a generic Concealment effect will always provide the same buff. Read the actual skill type displayed after the patch.
Where to get the Prepping in the Dark module
The final update confirms Trigger Module Loot L in Cradle of Evolution and Karel’s Mothership, plus rewards from Axion Plains Wall Crasher. The module shares a loot pool with other Trigger Modules, so the named missions provide a chance to find it rather than a guaranteed reward. Nexon’s full patch notice now gives the relevant mission loot pools, with individual module drops still random.
Once you have it, its function is clear: qualifying Ground DoT and Concealment-type skills can activate bonuses to Toxic skill power and Skill 4 cooldown. That’s the scope Nexon has confirmed. Don’t spend resources farming an unrelated location simply because another Trigger Module drops there.
The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module: release date and known details
The module belongs to the October 15 update, with maintenance scheduled from 6 AM to 4 PM BST. The scheduled end may shift, and the preview is subject to change at launch. If the module isn’t showing before the servers return, wait for the update and verify the new game version rather than searching through the old module catalogue.
The same update also changes Enzo and Gley. Our Gley rework guide covers the Skill 4 module changes and the Enzo rework guide explains his 12-second Tactical Acceleration cooldown and mobile support effects.
The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module: final trigger sequence and drop locations
Update 1.4.5 specifies the order: deal damage with a Ground DoT skill to gain Gap, then use a Concealment skill while Gap is active to receive Ambush Setup. This reduces Skill 4 cooldown and raises Toxic Skill Power.
For farming, the module is part of Trigger Module Loot L awarded through Cradle of Evolution and Karel’s Mothership. The loot-pool chance rises from 8.6% to 11.5% in Cradle of Evolution, from 36.4% to 48.5% in Karel’s Mothership Normal, and from 48.5% to 64.7% in Hard. Those are loot-pool chances, not a guaranteed drop of this exact module. Axion Plains Wall Crasher adds it to its Trigger Module reward pool, too.
The First Descendant Prepping in the Dark module: missing Toxic Skill Power display
The October 15 update introduced a display problem with Prepping in the Dark. The module’s Toxic Skill Power bonus still works, but the increase does not appear correctly on the character information screen. A missing number on that screen does not mean the bonus failed to activate.
The trigger order remains Ground DoT followed by Concealment while Gap is active. Nexon has acknowledged the display bug in its Update 1.4.5 known issues notice, with a fix planned for version 1.4.6.
