ESO Class Mastery rewards characters who keep all three original class skill lines instead of borrowing another class’s abilities. Once your native lines are all rank 50, the new Class Mastery tree unlocks automatically and gives you two points to spend.
There are five passives for each class, so you must choose two. Ordinary Skill Points won’t buy the remaining three. This guide explains the requirements, how to choose effects and why the tree sometimes disappears after switching a loadout.
How to unlock ESO Class Mastery
Get each of your character’s three original class skill lines to rank 50. You must also have those three lines equipped without an outside subclass line replacing one. When both requirements are met, ESO Class Mastery unlocks in the Skills menu without an extra quest or a Crown Store purchase. If the entry is greyed out, check each native line’s rank and whether you’re currently using an outside class line.
How the two points work
Unlocking grants exactly two Class Mastery Points. Each of the five passives costs one, so you can learn two at once. The points are awarded immediately and are separate from the Skill Points you earn from quests and levelling. That two-point cap doesn’t increase because you’ve collected more skyshards or Champion Points. If you want a different pair, reset your existing purchases and move the two points.

What each passive does
Each of the seven classes has five unique options. Below are all 35 ESO Class Mastery passives and the main effect of each one. You get two Class Mastery Points, so you can activate two passives for your class. Some depend on a particular rank of an existing ability or passive, so check those prerequisites before choosing.
Arcanist: all five Class Mastery passives
| Passive | What it does |
|---|---|
| Abyssal Emergence | Using an Ultimate fills Crux and grants a damage bonus. |

Why the mastery tree disappears
Replacing even one original class line with a subclassed line disables Class Mastery and refunds its point purchases. The game hides the tree until you return to an arrangement with all three native lines, still at rank 50. Your underlying class skill levels are not erased by this. Losing access isn’t punishment or a missing achievement; it’s how the game separates pure-class passive bonuses from borrowing abilities from other classes.
ESO Class Mastery: How to respec mastery points
Open the Skills menu and use the free respec controls introduced in Update 49, then spend the two mastery points on another pair. You can also use a saved Armory setup. Respecs have a short cooldown and cannot be performed during combat, Vengeance or restricted leaderboard activities. Don’t buy an old Skill Respec scroll just to change these passives: the current ESO Class Mastery system uses the regular reset tools.
How it interacts with the Armory
You can save a pure-class build in one Armory slot and a subclassing loadout in another. Loading the subclass setup automatically removes the active mastery effects, while restoring the native-only configuration makes the mastery tree available again. An Armory slot also records gear, attributes, Champion Points, quickslots and vampire or werewolf status, so always save a build you want to retain before overwriting a slot.

Should you use mastery or subclassing?
A Dragonknight or Sorcerer using all three native class lines gains unique mastery effects, while a subclass build can bring an outside class heal, damage tool or utility line into its setup. There isn’t one answer for every role or patch. Try your two passive choices in the content you play most often. Switching to subclassing for a different challenge is an option, but remember the account-wide training lock for an unfinished subclass line.
Balance changes to expect
ZeniMax calls ESO Class Mastery an iterative system intended to narrow the gap between single-class characters and subclass builds. Individual passive effects may change during class refreshes, even when the core unlock rules stay the same. Check tooltips after each balance update instead of relying forever on an old best-passives ranking.
