ESO Respec is free since Update 49: resetting your skill and attribute points now costs zero gold. You can change attribute points straight from the Character menu and reset skills from the Skills menu, without travelling to a shrine or buying a scroll.

Old guides still tell players to find Rededication Shrines or spend gold based on their allocated points. That isn’t the current procedure. Here’s where the controls are, when the game prevents a reset and what to check before rebuilding your bars.

How to reset your skill points for free

Open Skills, find the respec or refund controls and choose which purchased abilities, ranks, morphs or passives you want to change. You can now reset skills straight from the Skills menu, with no gold charge. Review your available points after refunding them, then purchase the abilities you want and place active skills back onto your bars. If you reset a morph, remember that you may need to buy the base ability and preferred morph again from the refunded points.

ESO Respec – How to reset attributes

Open the Character menu and use its attribute reallocation controls. You can move points between Magicka, Health and Stamina, then confirm the new distribution. Changing your attributes no longer requires a trip to a Rededication Shrine or a Crown Store item. Consider what your chosen weapon skills and class abilities scale with before committing to a new build; moving every point blindly can leave you struggling for resources until you adjust your equipment and food.

What happened to shrine prices?

Update 49 removed gold charges for resetting both skill and attribute points. Earlier ESO versions charged gold at Rededication Shrines, and older articles may still quote those prices. They’re obsolete for the current menus. Unused Skill Respecification Scrolls can now be sold for gold, so you don’t need one to use the normal respec menu. If you earned a scroll from A Study in Discipline, check whether you’d rather keep it or sell it now that menus offer the same core reset function.

When resetting is blocked

There’s a short cooldown between respecs to keep the game running smoothly. You can’t respec during combat, while in Vengeance or during leaderboard content, with Infinite Archive as an exception. If the control looks unavailable, leave combat, wait out the cooldown and try again in an ordinary safe location. The restriction isn’t proof that your character is permanently locked or that you need to buy something in the Crown Store.

Subclassing and Class Mastery after a reset

ESO Subclassing still follows its account-wide rank-50 training locks, even though redistributing Skill Points costs nothing. Respeccing doesn’t instantly master a line or free an unfinished training slot. Class Mastery has its own two special points, distinct from normal skill points. When changing the mastery passives, use the same respec tools but check you still have all three native class lines active; the mastery tree hides when you subclass.

Armory builds can restore a setup

If you’re planning a major reset, save your current build at an Armory Station first. Loading that build later can bring back its recorded skills, attributes, Champion Points and equipment settings. It can also change the character’s vampire/werewolf affiliation and quickslots, so a loaded build is much broader than a simple skill reset. Save your present build in another slot if you might want to return to it.

Will a reset remove your skill ranks?

Refunding points doesn’t generally erase the experience ranks you’ve earned in your skill lines. You can still purchase abilities once you meet their rank requirements. The reset changes where your points are allocated, not your character’s completed quests or earned skyshards. After changing skills, inspect your bars because refunded active abilities may need to be equipped again. That’s often why a player thinks a skill vanished after changing their build.

Respec for tank, healer or damage builds

Free respecs make it much easier to change roles while learning the game. Before resetting, note your preferred skill morphs, class passives, gear, Mundus choice and Champion Points. Adjust your attributes and skills first, then test the build on ordinary enemies before entering a difficult group activity. If you’re changing roles regularly, storing two well-tested Armory setups can save repeated menu work.
