ESO Challenge Difficulty: How to Change Overland Difficulty and Rewards

ESO Challenge Difficulty lets you make ordinary exploration and story fights harder without changing the difficulty for everyone else around you. Open the Character Sheet to choose Adventurer, Seasoned, Master or Vestige. Higher settings make enemies hurt more and reduce the damage you deal, but improve the gold and XP they drop.

It’s an opt-in system introduced with Update 50, and it isn’t applied to group Dungeons, Trials, Arenas, Infinite Archive or Night Market. You can change it at any time outside the switching cooldown, and each setting has a different balance of damage dealt, damage taken, and reward bonuses.

How to change Challenge Difficulty

Open your Character Sheet and find the Challenge Difficulty control. Select the difficulty you want, confirm the change and return to overland content. Adventurer is the usual game experience with no changes. You can move to Seasoned, Master or Vestige when you want a harder fight. ESO Challenge Difficulty operates on your character’s combat calculations rather than moving you to a completely separate zone filled with different players.

All four Challenge Difficulty settings

The official Update 50 figures are: Adventurer, normal damage and rewards; Seasoned, monsters deal 100% more damage to you, your damage is reduced 50%, monster gold increases 50% and XP increases 20%; Master, you take 300% more damage, deal 65% less, gain 100% extra gold and 75% extra XP; Vestige, you take 600% more damage, deal 80% less, and gain 200% extra gold and 100% extra XP. These percentages describe changes against monsters covered by the system, not a flat bonus to every reward you earn.

Where the ESO Challenge Difficulty setting works

It applies to overland encounters, delves, public dungeons and story instances. It doesn’t apply to the separately balanced group Dungeons, Trials, Arenas, Infinite Archive or Night Market. If you’re heading into a veteran dungeon, don’t expect your selected Vestige difficulty to add an extra multiplier on top of its existing challenge. The system is meant to give questing and normal world exploration more bite for players who already have strong characters.

What Challenge Difficulty rewards include

Higher difficulty increases the experience and gold you get from covered monsters, not all loot tables or every source of XP. ZeniMax’s release details don’t promise better rare equipment, guaranteed motif drops, extra quest endings or more achievement points at the highest setting. If you want to level skills or earn gold from combat-heavy exploration, compare how long fights take. A very slow Vestige kill may yield less XP per minute than a quicker Master run.

Which difficulty should you use?

Adventurer suits anyone focused on quests and exploration. Seasoned adds danger without the harshest damage penalty; it’s a reasonable first test for a well-geared character. Master and Vestige demand better defensive play, healing and patience. Surviving fights still matters more than chasing the largest XP multiplier. If you’re getting one-shot, dropping down a tier can make questing feel much better.

Changing the setting back and the cooldown

There’s a short cooldown when changing your difficulty to limit repeated switching. The Update 50 known-issues page also describes a bug where some characters were placed into Master by default when logging in. Its workaround is to switch to Seasoned or Vestige, wait out the cooldown, then choose Adventurer. That problem was marked for a future fix, so if your difficulty looks unexpectedly high, inspect the Character Sheet before replacing your gear or resetting skills.

Does Challenge Difficulty affect friends?

The difficulty is an individual setting. Someone travelling beside you on Adventurer isn’t forced onto Vestige because you selected it. You can still quest together; the system changes the outgoing and incoming damage calculations against covered monsters for your own character. The setting doesn’t place you in a separate version of the zone. Discuss it with your group if one person is taking much longer to finish fights.

Does it change PvP or Veteran dungeons?

No. Cyrodiil, Battlegrounds and Imperial City have their own PvP systems, while veteran group content already has separate difficulty rules. If your goal is tougher PvP or veteran boss mechanics, the Character Sheet slider isn’t the tool for it. It makes ordinary PvE enemies harder to fight in exchange for increased gold and experience from those monsters.
