How to Get Zero Companion in Disney Dreamlight Valley is tied to the Season of Scares questline that begins September 23, 2026. Gameloft confirms that Zero, Jack Skellington’s ghostly dog from The Nightmare Before Christmas, is a permanent companion reward earned while progressing through Oogie Boogie’s six-week Halloween event.
Zero can be unlocked through The Ghost in the Portrait, the third Oogie Boogie quest, available since October 7. Complete A Halloween Invasion and The Oogie Boogie Contract first, then enter the Mirror Lair to rescue him from a haunted painting. Zero becomes a permanent companion once you’ve completed that quest.

To work toward How to Get Zero Companion, unlock Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store and Chez Remy, then check your Mail after the Season of Scares update. Enter Scrooge’s Store and use the mysterious mirror to begin Oogie Boogie’s first quest.
Season of Scares then opens one quest per week:
| Week | Date | Quest |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | September 23 | A Halloween Invasion |
| 2 | September 30 | The Oogie Boogie Contract |
| 3 | October 7 | The Ghost in the Portrait (Zero unlock) |
| 4 | October 14 | Rescue Mission |
| 5 | October 21 | Let the Games Begin |
| 6 | October 28 | Oogie Boogie’s Big Game |
You don’t need to finish the final Oogie Boogie quest on October 28 to get Zero. His reward is available at the third stage of the questline. Our Oogie Boogie Contract walkthrough will help you finish the previous quest before attempting the portrait puzzle.
The Ghost in the Portrait: How to free Zero
For How to Get Zero Companion, return through the mirror in Scrooge’s Store when The Ghost in the Portrait becomes available. This Week 3 quest sends you into Oogie Boogie’s Mirror Lair to rescue the ghost dog from a haunted painting.
- Finish A Halloween Invasion and The Oogie Boogie Contract, then read your latest event letter to start The Ghost in the Portrait.
- Enter the Mirror Lair, examine Zero’s Haunted Portrait and complete the memory puzzle.
- Speak to Oogie Boogie and Scrooge, place the gift box near the stairs and smash the rigged Lucky Wheel with your Pickaxe. Collect the cogs and Ghostly Paint Thinner.
- Apply the thinner to your Royal Watering Can and try it on the portrait. You’ll discover that Zero still needs rescuing.
- Speak to Merlin, then find and water the five Zero drawings around the lair to collect five Zero Essence.
- Craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner, apply it to the Watering Can and water the correct portrait to free Zero.
- Finish the conversation with Oogie Boogie and select Zero from your Companion collection.
If this quest hasn’t appeared, check that you’ve finished the Week 2 Contract first. The event’s six stages unlock in order even if you’re catching up later than their original release dates.

For the remaining release dates, see the Season of Scares schedule. You can use Zero before completing all six Oogie Boogie quests.
Do you keep Zero after Season of Scares ends?
Yes. How to Get Zero Companion awards a permanent companion. Zero does not disappear when Oogie Boogie’s seasonal event window closes. Gameloft specifically describes Zero as a permanent Companion for your Valley.
The same event also ends with Oogie Boogie becoming a permanent villager after the complete questline. Zero and Oogie Boogie are separate rewards, so unlocking one does not mean you should stop if you want both.
Do you have to unlock Zero before November 4?
You need to start the first Season of Scares quest before November 4, but How to Get Zero Companion does not require every later quest to be completed before that date. Gameloft says starting the first quest in time lets you continue the remaining chain at your own pace after Oogie Boogie leaves the active event window.
If you have not started yet, follow our How to Start Season of Scares guide and Scrooge’s Store mirror guide. Once the opening quest is safely active in your save, the later Zero reward remains reachable as you progress.
Can you buy Zero instead?
Gameloft’s Season of Scares announcement presents quest progression as the route for How to Get Zero Companion. It does not tell players to buy Zero from the Premium Shop. During the event, treat the Oogie Boogie questline as the confirmed acquisition method.
If a future shop option is ever introduced, that would be a separate acquisition route and should not be confused with the 2026 seasonal reward. For this event, the free quest chain is the confirmed path.
What happens if you miss Season of Scares?
If you never start the first quest before November 4, How to Get Zero Companion may have to wait until the event returns. Gameloft says Oogie Boogie will return around Halloween next year, and Zero is part of the same seasonal quest chain.
Gameloft’s official Season of Scares event page confirms the October 7 quest release, that Zero is a permanent companion, and the November 4 deadline for beginning the questline. If you start A Halloween Invasion before that deadline, you can complete the remaining challenges later.
