Upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 with the Amalgamation function in the Horadric Cube. The inputs must be matching Soul Splinters of the same type and rarity, and the result moves up one rarity tier.

The live Season 15 rarity ladder is Magic, Rare, Legendary and Unique. Blizzard removed the earlier Common tier used during testing, so every Soul Splinter you keep is already somewhere on the final four-step progression path.

How to upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4

Take duplicates to the Horadric Cube and select Amalgamation. Anguish must combine with Anguish, Pain with Pain and so on. You cannot mix two different Soul Splinter names just because they share the same rarity.

The rarity also has to match. Magic copies combine toward Rare, Rare toward Legendary and Legendary toward Unique. A Magic Anguish and a Legendary Anguish do not count as a matching pair for one upgrade recipe.

What improves when rarity goes up

The boon becomes stronger. Anguish scales its Crit and Attack Speed bonus upward, Pain gains more Damage Reduction, and the farming rewards on Lies become much more meaningful at high rarity.

The important catch is that several liabilities remain harsh. Higher rarity improves the bargain because the upside grows, not because the downside disappears. That is why a Unique gem can finally become worth using where a Magic copy felt weak.

Keep useful duplicates

Do not salvage or ignore every low-rarity copy. If your build eventually wants Hellfire, Pain or Anguish, matching duplicates are the raw material for the Cube. A farming run that drops several ordinary copies can be meaningful progress even without a direct Unique drop.

Which Soul Splinters should you upgrade first?

Prioritise the gems already proven to fit your build. Crit builds usually get clear value from Anguish, non-crit setups can chase Hellfire, Pain is a safe defensive investment and Lies is valuable if you are spending time leveling or farming materials.

Do not chase Unique rarity on a bad fit

A perfect Soul Splinter is still wrong if its liability breaks your rotation. Before you invest a pile of duplicates, check whether the build actually tolerates the resource, Crit, movement or defense penalty.

Check the live Cube recipe before combining

Blizzard confirms the matching-type and matching-rarity rule. The live Horadric Cube interface is the best source for the exact input count on your current patch, especially if a hotfix changes recipe costs during the season.

Why you should upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 selectively

Upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 only when you know the finished effect belongs in your build. A Unique Hellfire is still a bad destination for a crit-dependent setup, and feeding duplicates into the wrong path can delay the Splinter you actually want to finish.

The best reason to upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 is that the boon grows while many liabilities stay fixed. Pain becomes dramatically better as its Damage Reduction rises, while the movement penalty remains the same. Anguish follows the same logic with stronger offensive stats around a fixed resource-cost tax.

Plan duplicate storage before using Amalgamation

Before you upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4, keep matching copies together by type and rarity so you can see which path is closest to the next tier. This prevents a stash full of random Magic and Rare Splinters from turning into guesswork.

If you upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 for several builds, prioritise the shared options first. A defensive Pain or broadly useful Anguish can serve more characters than a specialist Splinter that only works inside one niche interaction.

Because the liabilities remain important, upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 with the finished build in mind rather than rarity alone.

If you are short on matching duplicates, upgrade Soul Splinters in Diablo 4 in priority order instead of spreading materials across every type.
