Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred is Mephisto’s Prime Evil alignment in Season 15, earned through the Season of Hell’s Legacy questline when you defeat the Echo of Mephisto at the Durance of Hate. Bearing it activates a Physical-damage Iconic Power and sends your seasonal reputation into the Hatred track.
You can use Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred as your active Prime Evil alignment while socketing Soul Splinters such as Anguish, Pain or Hellfire into your jewellery. Soul Splinters are upgraded through Horadric Cube Amalgamation, while your Prime Evil power improves through seasonal reputation and War Plans. Spare Prime Evil Splinters can also be saved for the Wirt’s Lucky Coins recipe described above.

How to get Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred
Complete The Burning Shepherd, defeat Sankekur and speak to him to open the Durance of Hate Waking Nightmare. In Travincal, collect Khalim’s Eye, Brain, Heart and Flail, then use them at the Compelling Orb. Descend to Durance Level 3, move away from Mephisto’s lightning storm and defeat his clone and Hell Gates as they appear. Defeat the Echo of Mephisto and collect the Splinter. The first reward comes from the seasonal story, not a Lair Boss summon.
After completing the seasonal questline, you can obtain additional Prime Evil Splinters through the largest Waking Nightmares. These Splinters are consumable items kept in your inventory, allowing you to change your active Prime Evil alignment without starting another character. You can hold multiple Splinters, but only one Prime Evil alignment can be active at a time.
What Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred does
While you bear it, Mephisto’s Iconic Power periodically erupts during combat and deals Physical damage. The reputation track then improves that power six times as you progress, alongside the activity modifiers tied to the track.
The power has a real downside: carrying Mephisto’s Splinter makes you more vulnerable to Mephisto. That matters most when you replay the matching Prime Evil content at higher difficulty. Treat the Splinter as borrowed power with a cost, not a free passive bonus.

Best activities for Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred
Blizzard ties this track to The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons. If those activities dominate your current farming loop, Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred is the efficient alignment because your seasonal reputation and War Plans modifiers advance where you are already spending time.
The best alignment depends more on the activity you intend to farm than on your character class. A Barbarian and a Sorcerer can both prefer Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred if they are farming The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons; the class-specific combat build is handled separately by socketed Soul Splinters, gear and skills.
When to switch away from Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred
Change away from Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred when Pit and Nightmare Dungeon progression are no longer your priority. Baal’s Destruction track makes more sense for Lair Bosses or Undercity farming, while Diablo’s Terror route is cleaner for Helltide and Infernal Hordes. Tree of Whispers can still benefit across all three.
If your current route no longer matches The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons, staying on Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred simply because you earned it first wastes part of the seasonal system. The largest Waking Nightmares exist specifically so you can pivot without starting another character.
Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred and Wirt’s Lucky Coins
Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred also has a second use in Season 15. It is one of three Prime Evil Splinters needed to create Wirt’s Lucky Coins through a hidden Horadric Cube recipe.
To craft Wirt’s Lucky Coins, combine one Splinter of Hatred, one Splinter of Terror and one Splinter of Destruction in the Horadric Cube. The recipe consumes all three Splinters, so you will need spare copies if you also want to use them to change your seasonal alignment.
Wirt’s Lucky Coins can then be used at the fountain in Tristram to open the Echo of Tristram encounter on Torment difficulty. This hidden challenge features the three Prime Evils and offers a chance to obtain the Hellfire Torch.
If you are planning to complete this encounter, keep a spare Splinter of Hatred rather than consuming every copy to change your alignment.
Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred versus Soul Splinters
Prime Evil Splinters choose your seasonal alignment and reputation path. Soul Splinters are separate Jewelry gems with a boon and a liability, and you can equip up to three of those at once. Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred does not consume a Jewelry socket and is not upgraded through Horadric Cube Amalgamation.
You can use Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred for the activity route while choosing Anguish, Pain, Hellfire or another Soul Splinter according to your actual class build. The two progression systems work independently.
Diablo 4 Splinter of Hatred: how to troubleshoot a missing alignment
Mephisto’s Durance of Hate encounter is part of the seasonal story, not a permanent world-boss spawn. If your Power remains locked after an early Splinter use, Blizzard’s October 14 patch notes describe a recovery through completing the quest on another character in the same game-mode partition. Our Prime Evil Powers guide covers the scenario; Waking Nightmares handle changing alignment after progression is complete.
