Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay is fully supported, so Nintendo players can join friends and other players across Diablo IV’s supported platforms. Blizzard has confirmed the Switch 2 release joins the existing cross-platform ecosystem rather than being isolated on Nintendo-only servers.
There is a platform requirement to know before you organise a party: an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for crossplay on Switch 2.
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay platforms explained

Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay connects the Nintendo version to the same supported platform network used by Diablo IV elsewhere. That means the point of the feature is not simply Switch 2-to-Switch 2 matchmaking; it is the ability to group with friends who already play on other supported hardware.
Battle.net sits at the centre of that system. Your Blizzard account handles the Diablo identity and social connection, while Nintendo Switch Online provides the Nintendo-side access needed for the cross-platform multiplayer features.
Nintendo Switch Online is required for crossplay
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Blizzard states this directly in its official Switch 2 FAQ, removing the uncertainty that existed before launch. Internet access alone is not enough to join friends across platforms.
Without NSO you can still play the campaign and side quests, open-world activities, couch co-op, The Tower and Leaderboards, plus seasonal ranks and seasonal content. What disappears is the online player layer: parties, trading, Clans, PvP and other players in the open world.
Our Nintendo Switch Online guide has the full with-membership and without-membership breakdown.
Crossplay is not the same as cross-progression
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay lets you play with people on other platforms. Cross-progression is the separate system that lets your own progress follow the linked Battle.net account between supported platforms. The two features work together, but their Nintendo requirements are different.
Blizzard says cross-progression does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Crossplay does. That means you can continue an existing character on Switch 2 without NSO, but you need the membership if you want to join a friend playing somewhere else.
If you are moving an established account, our cross-progression guide is the one to read before linking anything.
What you need before joining friends
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay has three practical pieces: a valid Switch 2 copy of Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection, an internet connection with the correct Battle.net account linked, and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the crossplay functionality.
Crossplay does not mean cross-buy. If you already own Diablo IV on PC, Xbox or PlayStation, that does not automatically give you the Nintendo licence. The character progression can follow the account, but the game entitlement is still purchased per platform.
What happens if you play without NSO
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay switches off when the Nintendo membership is not active, and Blizzard’s restrictions go further than simply blocking a party invite. You cannot trade with other players, join a Clan, take part in PvP or encounter other players in the open world.
That makes the no-NSO version feel much more private even though it still connects to Blizzard’s servers. It is useful for campaign play and solo progression, but it is not the full shared Sanctuary experience that long-time Diablo IV players may be used to.
Is Switch 2 a good crossplay platform?
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay makes the port much easier to recommend to existing groups because nobody has to restart a separate Nintendo-only community. The 40 FPS Performance Mode also gives portable players a smoother option when they are joining more hectic group content, although the game does not offer 60 FPS on Switch 2.
The main extra cost is the Nintendo subscription. If you already maintain NSO, crossplay is simply another supported feature. If you do not, decide whether parties, trading, Clans, PvP and a populated open world are important enough to justify it.
Diablo 4 Switch 2 Crossplay is therefore a proper yes, with one clear condition: Nintendo Switch Online must be active. With that in place and the correct Battle.net account linked, Switch 2 joins the wider Diablo IV player base rather than sitting on an island of its own.
