Pokémon GO Buddy Background lets you show your buddy Pokémon’s eligible Location Background or Special Background to friends who visit your Trainer profile. It rolls out in two stages, on Friday 6 November and Monday 9 November 2026, starting at 10 AM local time on each date. Which stage applies depends on the type of background your Pokémon has.
You won’t get a new background simply by changing buddies. The feature displays an eligible background that your buddy already has. The key detail for friends is the release time: they can only see it after 10 AM in their own time zone, even if it has already unlocked for you.
Pokémon GO Buddy Background release dates and eligible designs

Pokémon GO is releasing profile backgrounds in two stages. Each begins at 10 AM local time, not simultaneously around the world.
| Release date | Local time | Supported background type |
|---|---|---|
| 6 November 2026 | 10 AM | GO Wild Area 2026 Location Backgrounds from Sendai and Mexico City |
| 9 November 2026 | 10 AM | GO Wild Area 2026 Special Background, plus all previously released Location Backgrounds |
| Future rollout | Not announced | Other Special Backgrounds |
Older Location Backgrounds have to wait until 9 November. That includes city and event souvenirs obtained before Wild Area 2026. However, older Special Backgrounds aren’t included as a blanket category. Pokémon GO says additional Special Backgrounds will be supported later, without giving a complete schedule.
How to show a Pokémon GO Buddy Background on your profile
Your chosen buddy already appears on your Trainer profile. The update lets an eligible Location Background or Special Background appear behind that buddy, where your friends can see it. It’s a visual feature, not a way to increase your Pokémon’s battle stats.
A Location Background commemorates a place where a Pokémon was caught, often during an event. A Special Background usually commemorates a particular event or activity. Players have been able to see these designs on individual Pokémon summary screens for some time. The Pokémon GO Buddy Background feature lets you put a supported design behind your buddy on the Trainer profile.
To benefit from Pokémon GO Buddy Background, make a Pokémon with an eligible background your current buddy. The November announcement doesn’t specify a new manual settings menu or a guaranteed way to override which background displays. There is no reason to invent a series of settings taps that the publisher has not published.
Why can’t my friends see my Pokémon GO Buddy Background?
Check your friend’s local time first. If you’re in Japan, you’ll reach the release hour before somebody in Britain or the United States. A background visible on your account may not appear for your friend until 10 AM in their country.
The same timing rule applies to both launch dates. You don’t need to keep swapping buddies while a friend’s local rollout time is still in the future.
Next, check your buddy’s background category. If your Pokémon has a historic city Location Background, the relevant release date is 9 November, not 6 November. If it has an older Special Background, don’t assume it’s automatically supported; Pokémon GO has said additional Special Background designs will be added in the future.

Do you need a GO Wild Area ticket for Pokémon GO Buddy Background?
The publisher doesn’t describe the profile display as a paid ticket feature. It describes the ability to display an eligible background on your buddy Pokémon. Getting a particular Pokémon with a Location Background can have its own requirements, but that isn’t the same as paying to show one you already own.
Two newly announced ongoing activities offer examples: the Sendai Lapras Stamp Rally awards a Lapras encounter with a Sendai Location Background, and the Mexico City Hawlucha Stamp Rally awards its city-themed counterpart. Both are separate from the paid event-day stamp rallies, and both require visiting their city landmarks in person.
Can older Special Backgrounds display on your Trainer profile?
Not all older Special Backgrounds work at launch. The November 9 wave covers the GO Wild Area 2026 Special Background and every previously released Location Background. Pokémon GO says more Special Background designs will be supported later, but has not announced a full list or dates.
The Pokémon GO Buddy Background feature also doesn’t remove the older artwork from an individual Pokémon’s summary page. This is an extra display location for supported designs. If a collection has a Special Background that isn’t in the first two release groups, the Pokémon still has that collectible background even though your friends won’t necessarily see it behind the buddy on your profile yet.
Where does the background appear?
Your own Trainer profile is accessible from the Trainer portrait on the main map. That screen already contains your current buddy. The feature adds supported collectible backgrounds to that public-facing display, visible to other Trainers in your friends list when their rollout window opens.
If it isn’t appearing, check the supported date, time zone and the exact Pokémon you have selected as your buddy. Don’t confuse a buddy with a background on its individual summary screen with a general account background or an event badge. For more on GO Wild Area’s wider changes, see our Global 2026 guide.
For the Pokémon GO Buddy Background feature, first check your buddy has an eligible background. Sendai and Mexico City Location Backgrounds start on November 6; previous Location Backgrounds and the new Wild Area Special Background follow on November 9. Friends see the effect once their own local rollout hour has arrived.
