Valheim raids are random world events that spawn waves of enemies around an eligible player, usually near a developed base. On default settings the game checks roughly every 46 minutes and has a 20 percent chance to start an available event, with the enemy pool changing as boss defeats and world progression unlock or disable raids.
What triggers a raid?
Most Valheim raids need a valid player who is in an allowed biome, outside a dungeon and within 40 meters of at least 3 qualifying base structures.
If those conditions are met when the event roll succeeds, the game chooses from currently available raid types.
Progression matters because many raids become available after specific bosses or enemies have been defeated, while some earlier events stop after later milestones.
The 46-minute check
On default settings, the game rolls for an event about every 46 minutes.
The chance is 20 percent, so a raid is not guaranteed every 46 minutes.
Valheim raids can therefore arrive close together or leave a base untouched for several hours simply because of luck.
World modifiers can alter event frequency, making custom servers behave differently from default worlds.
Why base structures matter
Most events look for a player near at least 3 structures that count as player-base objects.
That is why a proper home is much more likely to become a raid location than a temporary campsite with one Workbench.
Base structures also suppress ordinary spawning nearby, which can help push normal and raid enemies away from important buildings.
Leaving may pause the raid
For most Valheim raids, the timer only progresses while a player remains inside the active event area.
Running far away can pause the event rather than ending it.
The visible red circle is also smaller than the full internal event area, so the timer can still progress slightly beyond the map marker.
Fighting safely inside the zone is often better than trying to flee indefinitely.

Boss progression changes the pool
The early event sends Boars and Necks before Eikthyr is defeated.
Later progression can enable Greydwarf, Troll, Swamp, Mountain, Plains and late-game attacks.
Valheim raids therefore scale with what the world has accomplished rather than with the quality of one player’s current armor.
On default world-based settings, boss kills and some enemy kills affect everyone sharing the world.
Player-based raid settings
Servers can switch to player-based events.
Under that system, availability depends more on an individual player’s Forsaken powers, acquired boss items and personal kills.
This is useful on multiplayer worlds where one veteran has advanced much farther than a new player.
If Valheim raids seem inconsistent between servers, check whether one uses world-based and another player-based progression.
Best base defence
Valheim raids are easiest to manage when the base is designed around them instead of treated as a peaceful building project with no defensive plan.
Earth walls and deep moats are extremely strong because most enemies cannot destroy raised terrain.
Stone walls, gates and later materials provide useful secondary protection.
Keep portals, crafting stations and storage away from the outer wall so one breach does not destroy the logistics core of the base.
A dedicated fighting area outside the main buildings also keeps enemy attacks away from valuable structures.
Protect tame animals
Boars, Wolves and Chickens can die very quickly during Valheim raids.
Ground walls are not enough against flying enemies such as Bats or Drakes.
Use roofs and enclosed livestock buildings for valuable breeding animals, and keep backup Eggs or a second breeding pair when possible.
One unlucky event should not erase hours of taming progress.
Spawn suppression
Workbench-like base structures suppress normal spawning within their radius and can influence where enemies appear.
Large, well-covered bases can push spawns farther out, although raid enemies may still appear outside the visible event circle and move inward.
Do not rely on one Workbench as an invisible force field. Combine suppression with terrain and physical defenses.
What to do when a raid starts
Valheim raids reward preparation more than panic. Refresh food, equip the right resistance mead for the enemy type and move away from fragile structures.

Stay aware of the timer and kill priority threats first.
Valheim raids become much easier when the base has a planned battle zone and emergency supplies rather than when every event becomes a fight among crafting benches, livestock and portal frames.
Stronger raid messages are a sign the world has advanced, so upgrade your defenses alongside your gear and the random event system becomes a challenge instead of a base-ending disaster.
