Valheim Comfort Level: Max Comfort 22 and Rested Bonus

Valheim Comfort Level
Valheim Comfort Level

Valheim Comfort Level changed substantially with Valheim 1.0. The permanent maximum is now Comfort 22, which gives 29 minutes of the Rested buff, while a base that also has both the seasonal Maypole and Yule Tree can reach Comfort 24 for 31 minutes. Older guides that still cap normal comfort at 17 are describing the pre-1.0 system.

The biggest change to Valheim Comfort Level is not simply a higher number. Valheim 1.0 expanded the comfort system to 11 furniture groups and upgraded the comfort values of several existing pieces. Only the best item in each group counts, so a compact room containing the right categories is far more effective than filling a hall with duplicate chairs, rugs and tables.

The normal permanent Valheim Comfort Level ceiling is 22. At Comfort 22, Rested lasts 29 minutes. The Maypole and Yule Tree each add one additional comfort point outside the normal furniture groups, so keeping both standing can raise the practical ceiling to 24 and extend Rested to 31 minutes.

SetupComfortRested duration
Basic sheltered resting29 minutes
Comfort 101017 minutes
Comfort 20 achievement target2027 minutes
Permanent Valheim 1.0 maximum2229 minutes
Maximum with Maypole + Yule Tree2431 minutes

The Rested duration formula remains simple: seven minutes plus your current comfort number. Comfort 1 therefore produces eight minutes, Comfort 20 produces 27 minutes and Comfort 22 produces 29 minutes. The strength of Rested does not increase with a higher Valheim Comfort Level; only its duration does.

Every comfort group in Valheim 1.0

Valheim checks nearby comfort pieces, sorts them by group and uses only the strongest contribution from each group. Shelter provides the base two comfort points, then the furniture groups build on top of that. This is why two thrones or three rugs do not keep increasing the number.

Those categories are the reason the current Valheim Comfort Level can reach 22 without any seasonal furniture. The 1.0 release added new comfort groups and improved several furniture values, so simply copying an old Ashlands room will leave useful points on the table.

How comfort stacking actually works

Only the highest-value object in a comfort group contributes to Valheim Comfort Level. If you place a weaker chair beside a stronger throne, the chair adds nothing. Replacing the throne with another throne also does not double the category. The same rule applies to tables, rugs, beds, fires and the newer 1.0 categories.

For Valheim Comfort Level optimisation, this is why the best comfort room is usually compact rather than enormous. Build around one central resting spot and include one strong piece from as many different groups as your progression allows. When the displayed number stops increasing after placing an item, check whether that object shares a group with something already in range.

Comfort range is 10 metres

Furniture normally needs to be within 10 metres of the character to contribute to Valheim Comfort Level. A huge hall can therefore show different comfort values depending on where you stand. Put the bed, throne, table, rug, display pieces and other high-value furniture around the point where you actually wait for Rested.

The Valheim Shelter effect guide is useful when furniture looks correct but Resting will not activate, while the guide to getting the Rested buff covers the basic fire-and-shelter setup. If the building itself becomes awkward while concentrating furniture, our Valheim building stability guide explains structural support.

Fire and active furniture still matter

For Valheim Comfort Level calculations, a fire does not contribute its printed comfort while it is unlit. The Hot Tub likewise needs to be operating correctly for its leisure contribution to matter. If your Valheim Comfort Level suddenly drops, check active pieces before tearing apart furniture that has not moved.

Resting and Rested are also different states. While you remain in a valid resting area, the Resting effect gives very strong regeneration and converts into Rested after roughly 20 seconds. Rested then follows you out into the world. You do not need to sit in the room for the entire buff duration.

What the Rested buff gives you

A higher Valheim Comfort Level only extends Rested, but Rested itself is extremely valuable. It increases health regeneration by 50 percent, doubles stamina regeneration, doubles Eitr regeneration and increases skill experience by 50 percent. A 29-minute timer from a permanent Comfort 22 room is therefore a major progression advantage rather than a cosmetic base-building bonus.

That makes comfort worth treating like food preparation. Refresh it before bosses, mining runs, sailing and long biome trips instead of waiting until stamina recovery already feels miserable. The Valheim 1.0 progression guide shows where that preparation matters across every biome.

How to reach Comfort 20 for Comfort Is King

The Comfort Is King achievement requires Comfort 20, and the current permanent Valheim Comfort Level ceiling of 22 means seasonal furniture is not required. You can reach the achievement target using normal 1.0 progression pieces if enough separate groups are represented in the same resting area.

If the live game clearly shows Comfort 20 but the achievement remains locked, update to Patch 1.0.16 or later. Iron Gate specifically fixed a case where the achievement did not unlock correctly. Our Comfort Is King Achievement guide covers that bug, while the Valheim 1.0 achievements list covers the rest of the completion system.

Maypole and Yule Tree can push comfort to 24

The Maypole and Yule Tree are unusual because they can add comfort outside the standard 11 furniture groups. If both are present, the maximum Valheim Comfort Level rises from 22 to 24. That creates a 31-minute Rested duration.

They are seasonal build pieces, but a piece that has already been constructed can remain after its seasonal build window closes. They are therefore useful bonuses for an established endgame base, but they are not necessary for Comfort Is King and should not be treated as mandatory progression.

Best comfort room strategy

  • Use one compact sheltered room rather than spreading comfort furniture across a huge hall.
  • Build around the spot where you actually wait for Rested.
  • Use one strong item from every available comfort group instead of duplicates from the same group.
  • Keep the strongest fire lit and make sure active furniture such as the Hot Tub is functioning.
  • Watch the displayed comfort number after placing each new category.
  • Upgrade weaker group pieces as new biomes unlock better furniture.
  • Treat Comfort 20 as the achievement target, Comfort 22 as the permanent 1.0 endgame target, and 24 as the seasonal maximum.

The best Valheim Comfort Level setup is therefore not the room with the most objects. It is the room that covers the most useful groups inside the 10-metre radius. That distinction saves materials, keeps the base readable and makes it much easier to diagnose why a new furniture piece did or did not increase the number.

Why older maximum-comfort guides are now wrong

Before Valheim 1.0, a permanent Valheim Comfort Level of 17 was a normal endgame reference point. The full release changed that by adding new furniture groups and modifying comfort values. A guide that still says 17 is the permanent maximum will also understate the available Rested duration and can wrongly make Comfort Is King sound dependent on seasonal furniture.

That is why this page now uses the current 1.0 system throughout. For more current full-release coverage, use the Valheim Guides Hub rather than relying on Early Access tables that have not been rebuilt around Deep North.

Valheim Comfort Level FAQ

What is the maximum comfort in Valheim 1.0?

The normal permanent maximum Valheim Comfort Level is 22, giving 29 minutes of Rested. Maypole and Yule Tree can raise that to 24 for 31 minutes.

Do I need seasonal furniture for Comfort Is King?

No. Comfort Is King requires Comfort 20, and normal permanent Valheim 1.0 furniture can reach 22.

Do multiple rugs or chairs stack comfort?

No. Only the highest-value item in the same comfort group counts. Add a missing category or replace the existing category with a stronger piece instead.

Why did my comfort number drop when I moved across the room?

Comfort pieces have a limited effective radius, normally 10 metres. A large room can move important furniture outside that radius even when everything is technically in the same building.

Valheim 1.0 made Valheim Comfort Level considerably more useful for endgame base planning, but the core idea is still simple: shelter, keep the room compact, cover separate furniture groups and refresh Rested before leaving. Comfort 22 gives nearly half an hour of one of the strongest everyday buffs in the game, so a well-built resting room pays for itself constantly.
