Valheim Buildings Disappeared after the October update? Patch 1.0.17 fixes a world-save bug that could erase objects when a large chunk file was split into smaller parts. Installing it prevents that particular failure, but doesn’t guarantee an already missing base will return.
Before loading the world again or trying a file fix, look for a usable backup. Valheim 1.0 changed how worlds are saved, and older recovery tutorials can send you looking for files the game no longer uses. Here’s the recovery procedure without putting your remaining saves at risk.
Valheim Buildings Disappeared: What Patch 1.0.17 Fixed
Iron Gate’s October 6, 2026 notes confirm a rare bug that erased objects in parts of a world when a large world-save chunk was split into smaller files. Patch 1.0.17 repairs that splitting problem. It doesn’t say that erased buildings, chests or structures automatically return when you install it.
If your Valheim buildings disappeared before the patch, recovery depends on whether an intact older world backup still exists. Other missing-world reports can have different causes. The update reached platforms over several days, with crossplay remaining supported during the rollout. Crossplay doesn’t mean saves automatically follow you between all platform accounts.
Valheim Buildings Disappeared? Back Up Everything First
Stop loading and saving the affected world while you investigate. Every new save can eventually push an older automatic backup out of the game’s retention window. If friends share a server, ask its owner to pause play and secure copies before another session.
When Valheim buildings disappeared after an update, keep the current world as well as every dated backup you can find. On a PC, copy the entire world folder and backup folders somewhere outside Valheim’s save directories. Don’t delete files, rename individual chunks, reset Steam Cloud or install a save editor. Valheim 1.0 uses multiple coordinated chunk files per world, so a single copied file is not a reliable backup.

Valheim Buildings Disappeared: Restore a World Backup
Use the in-game backup manager before trying manual file changes. Valheim’s official Steam Cloud save FAQ explains where its local and cloud backups live, and the Manage Saves interface allows you to choose an earlier world state.
- Open Valheim and select Start Game. On the character or world selection screen, open Manage Saves.
- Choose Worlds and expand the entry for the affected world.
- Compare the available backup dates with the last time you saw the base intact.
- Preserve a separate copy of the current world and its backups before accepting any rollback.
- Select the earlier backup and choose Restore Backup. Read the confirmation, then open that world and check the affected location.
- If the objects are still gone, keep the other backups untouched. Don’t repeatedly overwrite them in the hope of forcing the world to repair itself.
The reason to choose the backup carefully is simple: restoration rolls back all world changes made after that point. If Valheim buildings disappeared on a shared server, the host must restore the server’s world; restoring a visiting player’s character won’t rebuild the base.
Where Valheim 1.0 Saves Worlds on PC
Old guides describe a world as two files ending in .db and .fwl. Since Valheim 1.0 in September 2026, new worlds are stored in folders containing many chunk files, with backups in separate folders. Characters still have their own separate saves. Mixing an old .db file with chunks from a newer world is not a supported fix.
On Windows, local data is normally under %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim, with local world folders in worlds_local. On Linux, the normal root is ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim. Steam Cloud saves use your Steam account’s Steam\userdata\[SteamID]\892970\remote area. Dedicated servers can override their default directory with -savedir.
When Valheim buildings disappeared, check the saved world name and date before assuming the world folder itself is corrupt. Loading the wrong world or an old copy can look very similar to missing buildings. Keep every file within a modern world folder together.
Valheim Buildings Disappeared: Steam Cloud Versus Local
In Manage Saves, cloud icons mark Cloud saves and floppy-disk icons mark local saves. Steam Cloud isn’t a second guaranteed history of every world. It can synchronise a newer damaged state, and turning it off while a save exists only in Cloud can make that save disappear from the selection list.
If your Valheim buildings disappeared while playing through Steam, check which save location the game is using before changing anything. The Move to Local and Move to Cloud controls relocate saves; they are not recovery buttons. Back up first. Steam’s individual game setting is under Library → Valheim → Properties → General. For cloud-only saves, use the built-in controls carefully after preserving an accessible copy; don’t switch Cloud off as your first troubleshooting step.
Valheim Buildings Disappeared on a Dedicated Server
The server host owns the world data. Each player’s separate character save won’t contain the buildings, terrain changes or stored world objects needed to bring a base back. If Valheim buildings disappeared for everyone in a multiplayer world, the server owner should handle restoration.
- Stop the server using its control panel.
- Find the world save directory, using the configured
-savedirvalue if present. - Copy the active world folder and every dated backup folder to safe storage. Copy whole folders on Valheim 1.0+, not selected chunks.
- Check the timestamps and any additional snapshots provided by the host.
- Use the hosting provider’s supported full-world restore procedure, keeping the previous world untouched as a separate copy.
- Restart the server, confirm its
-worldname, and inspect the missing area before resuming normal play.
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation lists a default save interval of 30 minutes and four automatic backups, with the first retained interval at two hours and later ones spaced twelve hours apart. Server owners can change these settings. Some hosts also keep independent snapshots, so ask support even if the game’s own rolling backups are too recent.

Missing Boss Structures, Empty Sections or Corrupted Saves
Valheim buildings disappeared isn’t a single diagnosis. An empty patch of the map could reflect the chunk-splitting bug, but a missing boss structure, lost save entry or world refusing to load might be a different failure. Start with the world name, seed and backup date. On a server, check that the owner hasn’t accidentally selected another world.
If Valheim buildings disappeared in a modded game, record the mods and save copies before changing them. A world seed can recreate procedural terrain, but it won’t recreate your own buildings and storage automatically. Patch 1.0.17 does not promise that all empty world areas or broken saves have been fixed. If the available backups were made after the damage, they may already contain the missing objects.
Valheim Buildings Disappeared: Check the Installed Version
Look at the version displayed by Valheim on its title screen, and compare it with your storefront’s update history. Steam users can check downloads in their Library; console players can use the platform’s update check. Iron Gate said the October 6 patch would take a few days to reach every platform.
If Valheim buildings disappeared on a dedicated server, ask which game build the server is running as well. Crossplay still working isn’t proof that every host installed the same patch that day. Preserve the save before updating an older server, especially if several people are depending on the same world.
When to Report the Problem to Iron Gate
If your Valheim buildings disappeared after installing 1.0.17, or you have older backups but can’t restore them, gather the platform, game version, world name, save dates, whether the world is local, Cloud or server-hosted, and any error messages. Include the mod list if relevant. Screenshots of the missing area may help.
Iron Gate directs players to Valheim’s Bugs & Technical Issues Steam forum or its official Discord bug-discussion channel. On a rented server, contact the hosting company too, since it may have off-server snapshots. There is no guaranteed way to rebuild an already erased base without a good copy of the world. If Valheim buildings disappeared, protecting the backups you still have gives you the best chance of recovering it.
