How to Get Chickens in Valheim and Hatch Eggs

Chickens in Valheim come from Eggs that are kept warm and sheltered until they hatch. The easiest reliable source is Haldor, who sells Eggs for 1,500 coins each after Yagluth is defeated, although Eggs can also be found in the Sealed Tower connected to Hildir’s challenge content.

How to unlock Eggs at Haldor

Defeat Yagluth in the Plains.

After that world progression flag is active, Haldor sells Eggs for 1,500 coins each.

To establish chickens in Valheim from scratch, buy two Eggs if possible. One Egg can create one Hen, but two adults are needed for renewable Egg production.

Sell spare Rubies, Amber and Amber Pearls if you need extra coins.

Alternative: Sealed Tower Eggs

Eggs can also appear in the Sealed Tower in the Plains.

This gives another route to chickens in Valheim without paying Haldor for every starter Egg.

The Sealed Tower is dangerous content, so purchasing Eggs is usually simpler if the goal is farming rather than completing Hildir’s challenge locations.

How to hatch an Egg

Drop the Egg individually on the ground near a fire or another suitable heat source and keep it under a roof.

Hover over it until the status says `Warm`.

A stacked pile does not hatch correctly, so separate Eggs onto the floor. When the conditions remain valid, chickens in Valheim hatch after roughly 30 minutes.

Keep the Egg sheltered

Heat alone is not enough.

The Egg needs shelter as well as warmth, so build a proper coop instead of leaving it beside an outdoor Campfire.

Do not place Eggs in the fire. They only need to be inside its heat radius.

The temperature hover text can take a few seconds to update after you change the building.

Chicken to Hen growth

A newly hatched Chicken is the juvenile stage.

It grows into a Hen after roughly two in-game days.

Young chickens in Valheim do not immediately produce more Eggs, so give the first pair time to mature before assuming the farm is broken.

Protect the coop during this period because Chickens have very little health.

What do Hens eat?

Hens eat a range of seeds, making surplus crop seeds useful once your vegetable farms are established. Keep food on the coop floor where the adults can reach it.

Well-fed Hens are the foundation of renewable chickens in Valheim because breeding stops when the adults are hungry. Keep a dedicated seed chest beside the coop so cooking and farming do not accidentally consume the entire feed supply.

How to breed Hens

Two fed, sheltered adult Hens near each other can produce Eggs.

Feed them suitable seeds and keep the local population from becoming overcrowded.

The new Egg must still be warmed separately before it hatches, so a good chickens in Valheim setup often separates the breeding area from the warm incubation area.

Protect Chickens from raids

Chickens are fragile and can be wiped out quickly by flying enemies or area attacks.

A roof is especially important because bat raids can reach livestock that would be safe behind ordinary ground walls.

Keep the breeding pair in a fully enclosed coop and consider storing spare Eggs in a chest so one unlucky raid does not erase the entire farm.

What Hens provide

Adult Hens provide Chicken Meat and Feathers.

Chicken Meat supports strong later food such as Honey Glazed Chicken, while Feathers remain useful for arrows and other recipes throughout progression.

A stable chickens in Valheim farm therefore pays back the original Egg cost over time and removes the need to hunt for Feathers constantly.

Can Eggs go through portals?

Yes. Eggs are teleportable through ordinary wooden portals.

That means you can buy them from Haldor and carry them directly to a distant base without sailing.

It also makes starting chickens in Valheim at a second base easy because moving Eggs is far simpler than transporting live animals.

Best chicken farm setup

Build a roofed coop with a protected fire or heat source positioned so Eggs become Warm without exposing the birds to flames.

Keep two adult Hens as permanent breeders, store spare Eggs and hatch only as many as the farm can support.

Once that system is running, chickens in Valheim become one of the easiest renewable late-game resource loops: Eggs create more Hens, Hens create more Eggs, and surplus adults provide both food and Feathers.
