The Long Dark Iron Road DLC launched on 27 October 2026, opening the first part of Cauldron Island in Early Access. The paid Survival Mode expansion includes Anna Island, around 30 kilometres of railway, a Prototype Train, the Fulmar boat, a Portable Whale-Oil Heater and the first wax-cylinder recordings.
That’s only the beginning. Hinterland plans five islands and more than 100 km of railway, but only the first island is open. This is Survival Mode DLC, not a separate game or a WINTERMUTE episode.
What is available in The Long Dark Iron Road DLC now?

Anna Island is Cauldron’s first accessible island, and Port Remnant is where the Fulmar arrives. The initial railway runs for roughly 30 km, and players can discover, repair and maintain the first version of the century-old Prototype Train. It works as transportation and a mobile shelter.
Hinterland also confirms the Fulmar boat linking the new region to Great Bear, the Portable Whale-Oil Heater and the first 16 wax cylinders. The Wax Cylinder Player is marked as available at launch. Those are features of the current build, not ideas waiting for a later roadmap update.
How to enter The Long Dark Iron Road DLC
Install Iron Road and open Survival Mode. You can use an existing save or start a new one, but Cauldron Island isn’t a starting region. You’ll need to reach it from Great Bear.
Travel to Desolation Point, then go to the Hibernia Processing docks. Hinterland’s official support page identifies this as the Fulmar’s location. The autopilot boat takes you to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. It can also bring you back to Great Bear, along with equipment collected on the new island.
If the boat isn’t there, Steam players should open The Long Dark’s Properties, select DLC and confirm Iron Road is enabled. Let the installation finish and check for Iron Road branding on the game menus. Our Cauldron Island boat guide shows the confirmed route and what to do if the Fulmar isn’t there.
What the Prototype Train does
The Prototype Train is the main attraction of The Long Dark Iron Road DLC. Abandoned for about a century, it needs restoring and maintaining before you can rely on it. It provides a way to travel as well as a place to shelter. Our Prototype Train guide covers the opening systems.
The roadmap adds repair bays, fuel and water facilities, upgrades and obstacles such as damaged track, rockfalls and Aurora gates. Those aren’t all confirmed as playable within the opening 30 km. The train also remains on Cauldron; it cannot travel through Great Bear.
The Long Dark Iron Road DLC islands: what is open?
Only Anna Island is accessible in the initial build. The remaining planned islands are Stella, Freya, Morag and Skye, with hydraulic railway bridges intended to connect them over time. The planned rail network exceeds 100 kilometres, while the opening release covers around 30.
The Long Dark Iron Road DLC also has future plans for new wildlife, clothing, food, tools and more railway systems. Things such as harpoon hunting are named on the roadmap, but should not be presented as fully playable in the launch build without separate confirmation.
Wax cylinders, mystery and the Portable Whale-Oil Heater
The mystery centres on Hamish McLeod, an industrialist whose whale-oil technology shaped Cauldron Island, and his great-granddaughter Alice, who went there to investigate the family’s history. Historical audio recordings on wax cylinders let you uncover pieces of that story as you explore.
The Steam listing confirms 16 wax cylinders in the opening build. The larger collection is still being developed. Our wax-cylinder article explains what they reveal. You can also find the Portable Whale-Oil Heater and bring it back to Great Bear.
The Long Dark Iron Road DLC price, Steam and consoles
Hinterland announced an initial US$24.99 price and a 10% launch discount, with a planned rise to US$29.99 around the roadmap’s midpoint. Those were official launch figures, not a guaranteed current UK store price. Check the live storefront for your region.
Iron Road launched first on Steam, where Hinterland can issue frequent Early Access updates. Console versions are a future possibility, but no confirmed date has been announced. A copy of The Long Dark on console does not make Iron Road immediately available there.
How long will The Long Dark Iron Road DLC stay in Early Access?
Hinterland outlined an estimated 18 to 24 months of development. Smaller updates, larger feature releases and hotfixes will add to the build, but this schedule is not a guarantee that a particular island or repair system will appear in a specified month.
The Long Dark Iron Road DLC is worth considering now if you want Anna Island, the opening train systems and the first recordings. If you’re waiting for the whole five-island journey, keep an eye on future updates rather than treating the roadmap as already playable.
