Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide covers the permanent progression system added with The Starless Path 1.4 update on September 17, 2026. Way of Stars expands the previous Traveler Mastery structure, giving repeated runs with individual Travelers more story progression and a new set of rewards to work toward.
The important change is that progression now connects episodes like a constellation instead of functioning only as a collection of upgrades. Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide therefore matters for both power progression and story completion because following the system eventually opens the new Starless Path ending route.
Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide: how progression works

Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide starts with a simple rule: play individual Travelers and continue progressing them. Lizard Smoothie says each Traveler's episodes connect one by one like a constellation as you play, revealing stories that had previously been hidden.
Way of Stars is an expansion of Traveler Mastery rather than a temporary anniversary event. It sits alongside the game's existing permanent Constellation progression, which accumulates between runs instead of disappearing when a run ends. The update builds more narrative and collectible rewards around that longer-term character investment.
The developer has not published a universal table of every episode threshold in its launch notes, so Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide should not be treated as a fake level-by-level checklist. What is confirmed is the structure: use a Traveler, advance that Traveler's Way of Stars, connect episodes and claim the rewards attached to the progression.
The official Shape of Dreams Steam page is the main PC storefront if you need to make sure you are running the current build before looking for the new system.
What rewards come from Way of Stars?
Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide has several confirmed reward types. Progress can unlock illustrations, limited Emotes and unique Souvenirs tied to individual Travelers. Those rewards sit alongside the hidden character episodes, giving the system both cosmetic and narrative reasons to continue using more than one member of the roster.
The wording is important: the Souvenirs are described as unique to each Traveler. That suggests Way of Stars is not simply one account-wide track where every run feeds the same reward bar. Your choice of Traveler matters because the system is designed around their individual stories and progression.
If you have a favourite character, Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide makes that character a sensible place to begin. If your aim is broader completion, however, rotating through the roster is likely to expose more of the hidden episodes and character-specific rewards than repeatedly using only one Traveler.
How Way of Stars connects to The Starless Path ending
Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide is also the confirmed route toward the new ending. The 1.4 patch notes state that progressing through Way of Stars unlocks The Starless Path, a new ending route with a new adventure and a more powerful final boss.
The developers have not put a precise universal threshold in the public patch notes. Until the exact condition is documented in live play, there is no good reason to invent a required number of Travelers, episodes or levels. The useful fact right now is that the ending is progression-gated through Way of Stars rather than being selected freely from the beginning.
That is why we are not treating the ending as a separate step-by-step unlock page yet. Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide gives you the confirmed route without pretending an unverified threshold is known.
Does Way of Stars replace the Constellation system?
No. Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide describes an expansion of the older Traveler Mastery framework, while the game's Constellation still represents permanent character growth. The PlayStation launch overview describes Constellation progress as something that accumulates between runs, and The Starless Path adds new Stars for existing Travelers as part of the same update.
The 1.4 patch specifically adds new Flexible Stars across the roster. Lacerta receives three, Mist and Yubar receive two each, Vesper, Aurena, Bismuth and Nachia receive one each, while Shell receives seven. Several existing Stars were reworked at the same time.
Way of Stars therefore gives long-term play a broader purpose rather than deleting the systems players already use. You still build a Traveler through runs and permanent progression, but now that investment also reveals episodes and unlocks additional rewards.
What else should you unlock alongside Way of Stars?
Shape of Dreams Way of Stars Guide arrived with several systems that naturally overlap. Cetus is the new ninth Traveler and must be unlocked by digging through Piles of Snow. If you want to add him to the roster before investing in his progression, use our How to Unlock Cetus in Shape of Dreams guide.
The update also adds six shared Common Identity Memories. These can replace a Traveler's normal Identity Memory, creating different starting foundations for builds while Way of Stars handles the longer-term character progression. Our Shape of Dreams Identity Memories Guide explains that system separately.
Console players entering for the first time can use our Shape of Dreams Xbox Release page for the platform details, while Does Shape of Dreams Have Crossplay? covers mixed-platform co-op. Together, those systems make September 17 a meaningful starting point rather than simply a port day.
